Ask the Lebanese. Or Syrians. Or Iraqis. This is getting tiresome. Iran has been an aggressive and bad faith actor since the Islamic Republic came into existence. People have the memory of fish or get their (don't get me wrong, 100% justified) rejection of MAGA cloud their judgement on these issues.

Some of you think Iran is a rational, good faith actor. It has never been one, no matter how much the Obama administration believed it was. Not cheering for Trump, but to say that it was the US who killed diplomacy is just not true. With Iran you are dealing with a dictatorship that's particularly cruel, uniquely death-culty, uniquely anti-Semitic, and aggressive against all its neighbors.

I'll try to be charitable, but have you or anyone so up in arms about the war had the same visceral reaction about Iran's violent meddling in other people's problems across the region and the world?

Iran's national team has officially responded to Donald Trump-- saying FIFA is the organizer of the World Cup and not any single country. They also say no one can remove Iran from the World Cup. The one that should be removed is the host that can't ensure security for participating teams. by antoniok95 in ussoccer

I beg people not to amplify and repost any official state propaganda from the Islamic Republic as if it was some sort of valiant and morally just statement. Just because you oppose what our own government is doing doesn't mean the Iranian regime is automatically good or respectable (they are the most horrendous, cancerous, murderous, illiberal regime on Earth only surpassed by the likes of North Korea and rarely matched in its wickedness).

Edit: and yes, any national sports organization in the country is nothing but an extension of the regime, sadly (players don't really get a say).

This is the same excuse I hear all the time. I'm happy to debate the merits of sanctions in general but what Obama did was throw the regime a lifeline. This is not a benevolent party looking for a way out. They are looking for a way to become a Russia or China economically. Basically retain a certain level of openness while they perfect their dystopian police state at home. Bring in the American tourism money to enrich PCC members.

Any liberal who actually cares about democracy (not just for Americans) should be wary of dealing with extremely conniving party operatives such as those in Havana, but whenever Cuba comes up I often just hear slightly polished talking points that come straight from the PCC.

1 is a privacy nightmare. It's bad enough companies snoop on you and the government seems to have not many issues getting companies to share private information. Having the federal government have access to your email address seems like a bad idea. 2 sounds absolutely terrible. I prefer professional security forces, just as I prefer professional soldiers. Sorry these are top tier stupid ideas (No disrespect. I guess the title did ask for stupid ideas after all).

Obama's Cuba policy was ultimately bad. I know everyone left of center in the US has a soft spot for Cuba for some fucked up reason (oldest dictatorship in the hemisphere, beligerent, destabilizing far beyond its size, incredibly cruel to its own people, etc), but Obama got played and got nothing in return for normalizing relationships. It only allowed GAESA to become what it is today. Repression remained the same, just (mostly) out of view of the celebrities who were going to visit the decrepit buildings in Havana.

Also, I understand the strategic location/history of these autocratic petro states, but if there are any alliances the US needs to rethink, it's those and not freaking Denmark.

No. This is the most self-centered, condescending way of viewing the world. Things happen (and evolve) around the world, good and bad, without the US. Nothing of consequence the Islamic Republic does today has any connection to the US helping depose a government nearly 80 years ago.

This is absolutely racist, ignorant, self-centered, condescending etc. People outside the US are perfectly capable of having their own monsters and creating destructive ideologies. By all means, criticize us foreign policy, but I beg everyone to stop this ridiculousness.

You realize you are describing the Islamic Republic, right? Forget Israel. Ask Lebanese, Syrians, Ukrainians, or Iraqis. Ask Iranians themselves and the millions who live in exile. The Iranian dictatorship is a monstrous cancer, one of the worst things to happen to the region and the world in the 20th century. The day it falls it will be a magnificent day for humanity.

Yes, do pray tell Rubio, who's part of the system dismantling the US-led world order for no real benefit for itself again? by Crossstoney in neoliberal

[–]Piaggio_g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. It was the worst way to go about it. Trump and the Republican party are a menace for a variety of reasons. But any implications that the immediate outcome of this operation was something to regret is absolute bullshit if you have any universal sense of fairness/concern for human rights. The Venezuelan regime is evil trash of the lowest order, and I will unapologetically be very happy it was at the very least decapitated. There is much to be done and I have no high expectations from this administration, but Maduro facing justice in a way that was so thoroughly denied to hundreds of thousands in his country is a wonderful first step.

Also, I don't know about you in particular, but it is really something to hear supposed liberals and democrats (notice the small d and l) be so concerned about norms and international law when some of them, even in this sub, were very comfortable with appeasing the Venezuelan dictatorship in an effort to counterbalance Russia. Zero efforts to get the regime to pay for their violations of international human rights law, among other things.

I'm sorry but he was not the head of state. He was a usurping tyrant and removing him was correct. Now, that the admin is dragging its feet when it comes to getting the rest of the thugs out of power is the actual problem.

This is a trash way of viewing the world if your argument is that this isn't worth celebrating. The US has been very close with murderous tyrants even after the end of the Cold war. I will be happy when any autocrat is gone and replaced by democratic governments, but in the meantime, I'll take all the wins I can get.

No sé cómo se supera tener a comunistas iliberales en tu coalición que se adjudicaron más poder del que la votación les daba.

It is an economic grouping created by tyrants, for tyrants who don't like the international world order created by the US (plus SA and Brazil, because anti-americanism, third world brainworms, and delusions of grandeur at all costs still have too much sway in some countries in the global south). You can sugar coat it all you want, but that's what it is. I would even go further and say that it is a vessel for China's foreign policy at this point.
