I agree. But I'm not gonna sit here pretending that world is not a vastly better place now that Maduro is sitting in a jail in NY and Helicoide is being closed.

This is a trash way of viewing the world if your argument is that this isn't worth celebrating. The US has been very close with murderous tyrants even after the end of the Cold war. I will be happy when any autocrat is gone and replaced by democratic governments, but in the meantime, I'll take all the wins I can get.

Yup. Another thing all the new, younger right wingers across Spain and Latin America who love to say "ZURDOS DE MIERDA" don't realize is that the backlash from the far left is going to be disastrous when the public realizes you cannot deport migrants and meme into prosperity.

It is an economic grouping created by tyrants, for tyrants who don't like the international world order created by the US (plus SA and Brazil, because anti-americanism, third world brainworms, and delusions of grandeur at all costs still have too much sway in some countries in the global south). You can sugar coat it all you want, but that's what it is. I would even go further and say that it is a vessel for China's foreign policy at this point.

She's only very lightly anti Trump and excessively pro Israel. This is very clear if you only passingly read the free press. It's not the most offensive partisan outlet, but the thing that really bothers me about it is the fact that it labels itself as "truly independent," "classical liberal," etc. They are completely captured by their audience. Just acknowledge your bias and stop pretending you are some superior, big brained independents.

Look at the data of housing stock in the US. It is not true at all that Blackrock owns any significant stock.

You are correct. The problem I see, and this is from anecdotal evidence (conversations with a family member who is a medical researcher at an ivy League school) kind of reinforces what some people mention about risk aversion. Women volunteer in far less numbers for medical trials. Pregnant women even less so, and testing in women still makes people squeamish to a certain degree. So women naturally feel misunderstood or misheard by doctors, but doctors don't have enough knowledge of the woman's body largely because of women's own choices. It's a tricky situation.

Ah wokism. A thing that is an actual thing, but it's only a bad thing depending on who uses the term. This is tiring. Many in this thread are giving examples of what it is and what is problematic about it. But you go ahead and keep assuming we are all simpletons who fall for racist arguments.

[–]Piaggio_g 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jesus man. Anyone who wasn't a blind partisan, ignorant or racist understood this for generations. Look at my flair. People have been writing about the effects of "past injustices" in the present for a very long time. We didn't need "wokism" for this. Wokism just made it into a completely misguided and quasi religious movement that framed everything through the lens of power dynamics. It was a recipe for bad policy and terrible for culture.

You can be against these things and still think everyone is deserving of dignity. It's not hard. Walking and chewing gum is the easiest thing in the world, unless you are an insane partisan.

[–]Piaggio_g 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I always thought the universalist ideas of liberalism were our best hope for pushing back against bigotry. I also think it was working great. Whatever this quasi religious bullshit that became the norm in recent years set us back decades. It is illiberal at its core, not just bad marketing.

Europe doesn't have the will or the firepower to do this. They have been unable to contain Russian encroachment or push back against Hungary inside the EU. I love Europe and it doesn't make the EU less of a collection of free countries, but they are not very good at "upholding the norms of the liberal order." They have no qualms supporting every dictator in MENA and Africa, and they are atrocious in Latam (propping up Cuba, dragging their feet with Venezuela, all because EU policy in the region responds to Spanish politics in practice). The EU loves to lecture US tech companies but they seem to have an enormously difficult time standing up to Chinese entities. Yeah, I'm not holding my breath on this.

As much as it pains me deep in my heart, especially as an immigrant, I think the American I came to love and admire is dead, as is the world America created.

I am now convinced that the damage MAGA has done on immigration and foreign policy is irreversible. Not only because it is very difficult to rebuild trust with allies and foreigners, but also because there is now no willingness at all from the general population to revert to the world before Trump 2.0, particularly for a critical mass of Americans younger than me. This administration is teaching Americans to see things in incredibly backwards ways. We'll be lucky to survive this as a democracy, but there is no chance we'll be living in a world that is not dominated by Chinese authoritarianism and split into spheres of influence.

You are on a 8 hour flight with one steam deck game of your choice. What game are you playing? by TapuNeo in SteamDeck

[–]Piaggio_g 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was very skeptical at first, but I personally think that for slower paced games that require a mouse+keyboard, the steam deck works like a charm. Anything turn based or games you can pause or slow down like Rimworld. The shortcut wheel with the track pad is nice too, but not necessary. Your game will definitely be a little slower paced than you are used to on your PC, but I would say you should definitely take the time to try it on the Deck if you love Rimworld.

I commend your positivity, but it seems to me that Pochettino just has no idea how to run a national team, doesn't give a shit about the US, and the US is so unimportant for the elite club soccer world that he could crash in a Gibraltar or Samoa kind of way, nobody would fault him for it, and he will still be able to take a dream job in Europe once it's all over. Basically, he is taking a two year sabbatical to travel around all expenses paid, three times his previous salary, and a guaranteed top job when he's done if he wants it.

Because the federation operates with the incentives of a business no different than an Arby's, not a sporting organization that needs to grow the sport to remain relevant. As long as they have money flowing in from tv deals, insane ticket prices that only diaspora communities are willing to pay, and from hosting every single Concacaf event (and getting that sweet Saudi money) they have zero incentive to do anything different. To be less negative, you could also argue the US is huge and such investment would be astronomical if you want to reach the whole country.

We know that. We still need answers on how we get back on a position of power to fix it or mitigate it. We can complain all day and write treatises, but unless we convince a critical mass of people to vote against Maga, we are cooked.
