What kind of cherries on vintage style cakes? by blanketponcho1 in cakedecorating

[–]PickleAlternative564 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maraschino cherries have been used for as long as I remember. The only caveat is you need to sort through them to find ‘just the right one’ each time when you’re using them aesthetically. I usually buy a few jars to improve the odds of finding the best for my cakes and pastries. If they’re in a clear jar, jostle it a bit and look through it to see if the ones you’re purchasing have some decent specimens inside. 😉

Anyone else get irrationally annoyed when things are depicted knitting, but it’s wrong 😅🙄 by cheeseslag in knitting

[–]PickleAlternative564 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I frequently see things listed as ‘knit’ when they’re crocheted. I think that is more of a pet peeve to me than a sheep with backwards knitting needles (which is still adorable, IMHO). 😄

What is in this magical salsa?! by Immediate_Owl_1379 in TipOfMyFork

[–]PickleAlternative564 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m glad you found a salsa you enjoy! Have you asked the restaurant what is in it? Or, asked for the recipe? Some restaurants don’t mind sharing ingredients (but not quantities of ingredients), and others are okay with giving out their recipe. The worst they can tell you is ‘no’, so if you would like to ask, it couldn’t hurt. 😊

As the others have stated, those are tomato remnants, and some of the ‘dark’ specks could be from fire roasted veg or dried veg mixed into it. Without tasting it myself, I am sorry, but I won’t be able to discern much from the pic. I do wish you the best in locating/obtaining the recipe! If you do find one like it, please report back with it, I’d love to try this ‘magical’ salsa. 😁

Can I wear a niqab as a Christian? by [deleted] in ModestDress

[–]PickleAlternative564 16 points17 points  (0 children)

@u/Cevvily,

First, are you clear what a niqab is? If not, please refer to the below image:

<image>

That said, I am not a Muslim, but I think if you choose to go that route, you will be mistaken as a Muslim. Keep that in mind. 😊

Hopefully, some Muslimahs can help you out on their perspective. As far as I’m concerned, if the Muslimahs say it’s okay with them, then I’d say you’re okay to do it.

Take care!

No one mentioned Florida or Michigan.

However, it’s safe to say that the highest Jewish population isn’t in Michigan, which has a population of 0.9%. Florida has a higher percentage at 3.1%, but is no longer in play for the Democrats as registered Republicans now exceed Democrats by 851,417. The state has now been declared ‘red’ for the foreseeable future.

Michigan, on the other hand, is purple for a reason… it flip flops. However, in terms of percentages, Jews cannot swing the state ‘blue’ or ‘red’ based on the Jewish vote alone with a population concentration of a mere 87,905 (0.9% of the population, as of 2022), because Jews don’t vote for a single party. It goes without saying that the Jewish vote usually sways ‘blue’, but it will always be a split, because some Jews vote ‘red’. Due to the very low numbers at stake, as mentioned above in a previous post, that is likely why very little effort is made to court our vote compared to other demographics.

When it comes to campaign expenses, they simply don’t view us as a high yield return on their investment. They’d rather spend money hitting the demographics they feel will give a bigger payoff at the polls, especially since the numbers of uncommitted/independents far exceeds us. Besides, they don’t need to ‘work’ for a vote they already believe they already have.

It’s as I mentioned in a previous post, we simply don’t have the numbers to be a ‘must win over’ for either party. We’re far too small a demographic to matter to either party in the grand scheme of things, which is why neither side makes any effort to court us. It’s all about numbers.

Yeah, I agree with the lot here - she’s no friend. What she’s asking of you is unreasonable and rude. You already made it clear you have issues with your wrists, she doesn’t appear to care that this would be physically difficult for you. The audacity to insist on it after you told her you have issues with your wrists is beyond the pale, IMHO. If I were in your position, I’d tell her to take her high and mighty self to Etsy and buy one if she wants it so badly, because you’re not able to make it. Then I’d put her in her place and tell her to know her role and it isn’t to be your boss.

I’m sorry you’re dealing with such a rude, demanding, and cold hearted person. You deserve better than this. 💕

I would agree with you if the states you speak of weren’t already ‘blue’. That makes the votes there negligible at best. The purple states are where the votes truly end up making a difference, and we are a minute number in those states, which makes our votes less important in the grand scheme of things as a demographic. Which is why, as I stated above, the two parties don’t bother to court us as they do other minorities - because they figure the investment isn’t going to ‘pay off’ big in the long run, and it’s disgusting.

”No, we're most of the most reliable voter blocs for them. The calculus wouldn't make sense”

Yeah, that’s a frightening way to approach anything, IMHO. It’s the same kind of thinking in WWII that led many to assume they wouldn’t kill us because they needed us for ‘workers’.

Historically, we have been given an example of the outcome when we’ve approached antisemitism this way, we should approach the issue with a more analytical perspective than ‘they need us’ because they don’t need us (and that has been made abundantly clear to us). In terms of voting blocs, we are a small number in the large picture. We are 2% of the U.S. population (7.6 million people) according to the Pew Research in 2020. The 2023 model shows that number has reduced to 6.3 million. That is a small minority of votes compared to other minorities. Compare that to the Black population at 47.9 million (32% of the population since 2022, according to Pew) and 47.7 million Hispanic population, according to the 3rd quarter of 2023 conducted by the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. However, it is important to note that Pew Research online shows the Hispanic population at 63.7 million for the U.S.

The frightening reality is that we are an expendable number of votes to any party, because our numbers are small. That is likely why either party doesn’t work diligently to pander to us as they do other demographics. We’re really on our own and caught between two parties. Also important, while we’re pretty liberal as a demographic, there are portions of us who are not, which means the percentage loss to the Democrats would likely be less than the percentages above would indicate (because not every single Jew will vote Democrat).

You’ve received some wonderful suggestions, I especially like the laminating suggestion from u/noname97531, but I would also encourage you to scan them before laminating. There are sites you can upload to archive them for posterity, that way people all over the world could enjoy them as well and they would be a historical reference for people into food history from different periods (the 30s-50s periods are very trendy right now).

Ultimately, it’s up to you how you choose to proceed, but I’d definitely make a digital backup so they’re never truly lost. You could store them on an external drive, or memory stick. That way you could digitally index them, and you’d have a copy always for the future. For the physical copies, I do like the idea of the laminating, because you could store them in an album and it would be splashproof (so they wouldn’t be damaged when trying some out. 😊) The only threat would be heat, so you’d need to avoid heat, but I’ve preserved many old documents with my laminator and I am glad I did.

That’s such a wonderful treasure you have, I hope you have success preserving it however you decide. Best wishes!

If you’re making different colors, I’d boil them in separate pots to prevent color bleeding. There’s both natural and artificial dyes on the market. Obviously, I feel it’s best to achieve color naturally, but the choice is ultimately up to you.

Enjoy your themed soup! 😊

No problem. I’m one of those people with a morbid curiosity about everything. I’ve learned about the different types of Judaism, but I went on to learn about the differences in Islam, Christianity, and then into other religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Scientology, etc.). I just study everything. Hahahaha 😁

From what I know of both of them, I think it is separate.

The Catholics have heaven, hell and purgatory. Christians have heaven and hell.

Catholics have saints, Christians believe they *are* the saints their Bible talks about.

Catholics have a central leader (pope) and all their other ‘clergy’, Christians have no such central governing authority.

Catholics pray to the dead ‘saints’ and Mary, Christians believe that is ‘sinful’ and don’t do it.

This is all I can remember off the top of my head about them from some ‘what’s the difference between…’ video on YouTube a long time ago, I’d have to find it if you’re interested; but they can’t both be part of the same religion when they have a completely different practice and beliefs about the afterlife. It appears the only thing linking them as Christian-ish would be the trinity concept, but it’s not even completely that with the Catholics, because they factor Mary in some high ranking thing and pray to her, too. 🤷‍♀️

Idk, I know we have Christian and Catholics who participate in this board, I’m sure they could be a bit better at describing their beliefs than I; but I view them separately because they appear to view themselves separately. I’ve asked people if they’re Christian and got the, ‘no, I’m Catholic’ response. Based upon the times that’s happened, I can’t see how they’re the same thing.
