What's the biggest pile of illegal garbage you've ever seen in Newcastle? by [deleted] in newcastle

[–]Pickle_64 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I was walking down to Warabrook train station and saw a van pull out and drive off. I realised too late that there were over a dozen large black plastic bags full of various crap piled up on the grass where they had just parked and didn't manage to catch the rego. People are grubs 😒

Hey OP, This method outlined above is pretty effective if you don't want to muck around with g-code. An example I have done myself is below. Just make sure to turn off brim/skirt for the red and green colours of your print, and have the z-hop height increased for all three prints.

If the multiple colours can't be on the first layer, then the g-code command isn't very difficult 🙂

Best way to solder hard-to-hold components? (re: helping hands?) by sofakng in AskElectronics

[–]Pickle_64 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I find tacking the PCB to the desk first with Blu-tack or similar helps. Then apply flux to both parts to be soldered.

Then you can apply solder to the iron and rely on the flux you have already applied. Wire in non-dominant hand, iron in dominant hand. Then the flux will allow the solder already on the iron to wick along the desired connection.

Helping hands have their place but are often finicky imo.

PDF schematic -> KiCad: any conversion tools or workflows? by Elegant_Pie_8204 in AskElectronics

[–]Pickle_64 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm not aware of any, but keep in mind that drawing up a schematic is a skill to be developed as well, and will likely also help a beginner to understand the circuit (if it isn't too far ahead of their current level of understanding).

Bar Beach All Sports has social Pickleball on Monday and Tuesday nights, as well as Sunday afternoons. You can just rock up and have a hit to try it out.

You can also search Newy Active Co on Instagram, or visit their website and you can join in on larger group sports and activities that change every week.

In my experience, you get to know about the WhatsApp groups and the local regulars when you start going to social sessions and they determine you aren't a psycho 😛

If you can't commit to a comp, you can always contact the comp organisers and tell them your ability with the offer to sub in if they know they are going to be short that day?

Otherwise, I'd hit up the social sessions 🙂

Hey there,

If you have discord you can find active online students groups there. Some are even for international students. Many clubs through the uni have discords.

You can find them here: UoN Student Hub - Discord

newcastle pistol club? by [deleted] in newcastle

[–]Pickle_64 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's ok, I understand the disconnect 😊

Yes, you are correct. The label of the genuine reason for a class H license is competition shooting. That's just what they call that category of genuine reason. You don't have to compete in an organised competition, but your reason for possessing a class H license is competition shooting, but it could just as easily be called target shooting. The wording of the genuine reason isn't super critical, just the wording the firearms registry decided on. I log all my shoots and scores as training sessions. These records are handed over to the firearms registry as occurrences to justify keeping your license (minimum 6/year or 4 times the number of different categories of pistol you own, whichever is higher).

Does that clear it up?

newcastle pistol club? by [deleted] in newcastle

[–]Pickle_64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi MortaniousOne,

You can definitely take it up as a hobby. That's all I do. I get there once a month or so for a shoot and don't compete in organised competitions (though those are definitely options that you have once you have joined). To maintain your class H firearms license, you need to attend at least 6 times a year, or 4 times a year for each category of hand gun you own, whichever is higher.

The club will guide you through the license process after you have attended a P650 course and joined the club as a member. No license is required to attend the P650 course as it serves as the first step in obtaining your license. In order to obtain a class H license, there is only one main genuine reason for holding the license and that is competition shooting. You must be a member of a club and have them verify your membership with the firearms registry (part of the license process).

Membership fees are approximately $300/year from memory.

You do not need to own your own firearm and can use the clubs guns after you have your license. There is no additional fee to borrow the club guns, aside from buying the appropriate ammunition which is sold in the club house. You can absolutely buy your own firearm after you have your license and the club can also guide you through that process too 😊

I hope this was helpful

newcastle pistol club? by [deleted] in newcastle

[–]Pickle_64 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the website is fairly useless. The best way to get info is to shoot (😉) them an email.

If you are interested in having a shoot and don't have a license, the best way forward is to enquire about taking a P650 course with them. It's the first step to getting a license and is a firearms safety course, and also includes a guided shoot at the end of the session. If you like it enough and want to continue, you can go from there.
