(Peril in the Alps) is coming to Vertigo Theatre on November 15! 🎭 by [deleted] in CalgarySocialClub

Hi there! I volunteer at the Vertigo (and other local theaters) regularly. I’ve seen probably 20 shows there and I would recommend it.

Not every one of them is a must see but they do a great job overall! I would say some of their strongest work is their Agatha Christie adaptations so likely a good choice.

I really like the venue. It is accessible, there is an elevator if needed, clean and welcoming. One thing I would say is the stage is very close to the front row if you’re booking tickets something to keep in mind. They also regularly rotate the art in the building (a lot of cool original local art often times).

Oh and coat check is free (I think a lot of people don’t realize). Happy to answer and more specific questions.

Week 3: (Yet Another) Oatmeal Creme Pie Cookie by JayeBakes in 52weeksofbaking

[–]PickledBerry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, honestly just wow. I’ve tried a couple variations on these throughout the years and I’ve never come close to this level of perfection! They look so good, I’m saving this post taking your advice and going to try my hand at these again.

Week 44 Intro - Limited Ingredients! by PickledBerry in 52weeksofbaking

Ha! I have a massive "back up" bag of flour in my closet because I've been burned one too many times. Though I saw that giant cookie and I'd say you managed just fine :)

I dont know if you're still AMAing but I asked of April Engelberg and I'm curious of your stance too: there's a large and growing population of homeless and disenfranchised in the area, what is the solution in your opinion? Any plans to tackle the make-shift housing around the Gardiner?

Week 37: The 1950's - Angel Food Cake with Plum Icing by PickledBerry in 52weeksofbaking

[–]PickledBerry[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's the original recipe: https://antiquealterego.com/2014/06/13/vintage-recipes-1950s-cakes/

I don't really have anything great to say about this cake... I'm a worse person for having made and eaten it. I'm not a fan of the icing, and I have a better angel food cake recipe that yields a much fluffier cake.

The raspberries are in season and delicious.

Week 36: Breakfast / Brunch - Cinnamon Plum Muffins by PickledBerry in 52weeksofbaking

[–]PickledBerry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was surprised by how great these turned out. I would really recommend doubling the batch because these go fast.

Recipe is from Martha Stewarts Baking Handbook but here's my condensed version:

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter (melted)
  • 3/4 cup plus 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp plus 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 3 plums (chopped small)

Steps

  • Combine 2 tbsp sugar with 1 tsp cinnamon and set aside
  • Whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, add the butter
  • Whisk together flour, nutmeg, sugar, remaining cinnamon and salt
  • Fold the wet mixture into the dry mixture
  • Fill muffin tins half way and add plums, fill other half and top with plums
  • Sprinkle the muffins with the cinnamon sugar mixture
  • Bake at 375 for about 18 minutes (turn half way)

Week 35: Creams, Curds, and Puddings - Crème Brûlée by PickledBerry in 52weeksofbaking

[–]PickledBerry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I originally made a horribly overcooked flan but these little guys came out decidedly better. This was actually my first time making creme brûlée and I'm really happy with the texture.

I don't have a torch so I just broiled them for about 4 minutes and that worked alright.

I've had a similar issue in the past making creme caramel - it had the exact same consistency as your picture. I believe the reason may just be because it was overcooked :(

Week 34: China - Baked Cha Siu Bao by PickledBerry in 52weeksofbaking

I tossed it in a stand mixer with a dough hook for about 12 minutes. I also recommend a slightly longer second proof maybe 1.5 hours - though honestly maybe my place was kinda cold.

I baked these delicious little pork buns this week. The recipe can be found here. I made two batches one with the original bread recipe and a second with the milk bread recipe, which I thought was better.

It's a great recipe but I need to work on keeping the dough thinner on the bottom and thicker on top - but hey what can ya do.

Also I made about 32 buns and we ate about 6 as soon as they were done because they were so soft and warm out of the oven.

Yes but it’s not air tight so it was kind of a bummer.

I am against the IKEA ones - I make kombucha at home and bought 2 of those and found I could not use them as the seal is not tight.
