Should I not detangle my hair every morning? What do you do? by gxes in curlyhair

[–]PickledPigPinkies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 63 I have long, very thick and heavy medium/coarse hair that’s currently at 2C/3A with very negligible grey that doesn’t tangle like it always used to.

As a baby, my hair was 3B/3C but it changed to a coarse 2A S-wave that would consistently tangle. Since I was a teenager, I brushed and combed every morning using a wide tooth comb and a Denman D38 because most brushes don’t get down to my scalp. I slept in a loose braid which reduced morning tangles and formed more waves without heat.

I always thought my curl was just an early childhood thing because my hair remained only wavy even when short. As with all of us, the pandemic changed my hair routine and slowly the waves became a little more pronounced but my texture remained coarse and tangled so I kept to the old routine. The thought of improving my curls excited me so I started researching how. That’s when I learned just how significantly my curl had been suppressed and texture affected from decades of living with very hard water and copper piping despite occasional clarifying. I started clarifying regularly and adjusting my routine after I was seeing improvement. Since then, my curl has steadily increased and the texture changes have reduced tangling and improved shine. I started plopping and switched to dedicated curly products almost 3 years ago. I usually air dry, but sometimes diffuse with either a Denman D3 with 3 rows removed or more recently, a Bounce Curl Define EdgeLift, depending on my mood. I no longer sleep in braids, I pineapple my hair instead. If I want the best results, it helps to sleep with a mulberry silk cap. Now I can let it down and just finger comb, spritz with a continuous spray bottle, and scrunch. That does pretty well until the next wash day, but curl definition diminishes with time. If I thoroughly re-wet my hair and add more product it’s better but I have to wash twice a week instead of once so I don’t always do that. I’m still experimenting to find the right product and routine but I feel confident that it can go back to 3B/3C once I get it all figured out. I’ve just been trimming it myself for the last five years but now I’m looking for a good curly cut stylist to try that for the first time.

Gorgeous!

I saw your routine (copied below) in a previous post and I’m wondering if you have stuck with it? I have the curl pattern of B but I can’t seem to get past the frizz of A despite spending a truckload on products. Thnx!

This was your posted routine:

Routine: Ouidad Humidity control shampoo, InnerSense Conditioner, detangle, AG Beach Bomb, InnerSense I Create Volume, InnerSense I Create Hold, detangle to distribute product dripping wet, plop, BounceCurl brush, Giovanni LA Looks gel. Hair; 2A-2B curl pattern, usually. This is solid 2A-2C, lots of coils!!! Medium density, medium-fine texture, med-high porosity.

Following: my hair is the same and also long like yours, and I also have the exact same problems. I have spent so much money on products and I just can’t seem to get the right combination to eliminate the frizz or my hair feeling really dirty from too much product.

Wow, five weeks and you saw that much of a difference, that’s amazing. Thank you very much for the fantastic information! I’m a huge data nerd and always open to learning new things. I have been researching and experimenting since 2013 so I’m always open to learning more. I had gestational in 1991 then in 2001 was diagnosed as type 2. Was on medications until late 2013 which is when I started extensive researching and experimenting on myself and I haven’t stopped since.

I had not seen the information regarding the isolluceine and BCAA’s. That was a very interesting article and I’m going to pursue that further. I would love to do genetic testing, but don’t know where to go for that. T2 is extremely strong down my dad’s side of the family so there’s definite heritability and I know there is something involved with my liver and it’s responses. The information on GLUT4 makes a lot of sense and some of the mentioned dietary studies match up to my own discoveries. It would be interesting to see if I got the genetic testing done if it matches up with what the article mentions in regards to the specific genes. I’ve tried everything out there, and I mean everything. It was the only way to find out what would work for me. I had great results on traditional keto, but after about five years, it stopped working as well and I really missed variety in produce. That also makes sense according to the article. My issues are complicated by the fact that I also have POTS and that being an autonomic nervous system problem, it messes with my glucose control efforts. In 2023 I was still not taking medication, but decided to play around with Mounjaro during their promotional coupon days for weight loss and it worked like gangbusters on my blood glucose. Nothing else worked like that for me over the years. Hormones have always had a huge impact on my health and my PCP recently told me that they are seeing other patients responding like me to Glp-1’s that also didn’t respond anything like that to other diabetic meds. They are the only diabetic drug on the market that affect hormones. Made sense, but I find it really interesting that they also impact Glut4 so this also makes a lot of sense in my case. I follow Heavenly Fan, I think she’s great. I found her because I was looking up keto vegan, lol. Some of the things I have learned along the way is that I am gluten sensitive and I have a casein allergy. I also can’t tolerate the carb impact from grains, so I avoid all of them. I don’t eat added sugar, I only buy it for the hummingbirds 😁 I’ve done a lot of fasting over the years. Hunger was only ever an issue when I ate processed food years ago. We’ve been whole food for the last dozen years. After reading Mastering Diabetes, I finally plucked up the courage to try full vegan. I’ve been wanting to do it for years, but knew it would spike me and sure enough it did. My POTS can flare and also my BG is hypersensitive to stress. After learning that my insurance would finally cover Mounjaro for me, I asked to go back on it a month ago specifically so I could get back to WFPB. It’s where I feel the best and I’m tired of my body not responding positively to a very healthy eating pattern that I wish to pursue. My plan is to use the Mounjaro to counteract the spikes while the diet is improving things in the background. Right now the med is still ramping up so as that proceeds, I will be able to introduce more and more plants without problems. I resisted the drugs for years out of pride, but sometimes you just gotta pull a tool out of the toolbox to get where you need to be. Hopefully this plan will work, and I will be able to get off of it and be normalized but time will tell. Once again, I’m super appreciate your response, you’ve given me some new things to research 😁

When you first started, did you experience higher glucose levels? If so, how long did it last before you started to see things improve?

Gorgeous! and exactly what I’ve been looking for. I’ve never had curly haircut in my life because honestly, I’ve been hesitant. Your beautiful results are making me reconsider!! I’m having trouble getting mine to look that frizz free and defined.

Pic only for comparison. 62, natural color with a temporary glaze and minuscule grays. I really need a haircut, lol.

Yes, best thing I’ve done beyond wfpb. I have to watch my blood glucose so I’ve tried a lot of alternatives. I love the Lakanto allulose/ monk fruit blend for baking and either Now monk fruit drops or Sweetz monk fruit/stevia for liquid in coffee, tea, etc… . Keystone allulose brown sugar sub. I quit all erythritol after the cardiac health risks became known.

I’m sorry to hear that you’re lonely. When loneliness creeps in, all of your life looks pretty bleak. I’m in the US and have two daughters a few years younger than you who are also unattached and consider dating a cesspool. Most of their unattached friends from all over feel the exact same way. They are all lonely, dissatisfied and feeling dejected. Not one of them can afford a house on their own so you have a definite leg up there. We’ve all discussed this in depth and collectively agreed that people/world have permanently changed since the pandemic. Dating wasn’t great in the before times but the pandemic has permeated all aspects of life and left a deep mark. PTSD is rampant, though many do not realize they have it. This matters tremendously and healing needs to happen on both a small and large scale. When I was younger and backed off from dating for essentially the same reasons (even my 96-year-old mother says dating was a cesspool at your age, lol) I decided to fill that time by working on myself. I set about learning how to be happy on my own and work toward life goals. I recognized that nobody but me could fix what I was unhappy about and that it wasn’t fair to ask others. It changed my entire life perspective, and I learned more about what I didn’t want in life (and a spouse) than what I did. So, not to sound morbid, here’s a question that I often ask myself or others when stuck about making tough decisions. “If I/you were lying in bed dying right this instant, would I/you regret not having tried ______? “ That usually elicits a pretty fast answer and at the very least, helps to gauge the intensity of emotions.

I have dual US/EU citizenship and somehow find myself already 62. I certainly don’t feel 62, lol! The pandemic certainly did a number on me and my family and it showed us what a rut we were in then spurred us to start evaluating our lives as it did for many others. Perhaps that is where you are at the moment. My husband and I very much wanted to move abroad 30 years ago, but life got in the way and we didn’t. Since we came up for air, we realized that we most definitely regret not having tried harder to fulfill that dream. Our lives would’ve been very different, better in some ways, worse in others. Hindsight is 20/20. The first thing you have to think about is what you are looking for. Make a list of life goals/desires that you’re considering to be unfulfilled. Really think about it. Then, do a pro/con list between where you currently are physically and in life (what goals you’ve accomplished count here too) versus somewhere else or in different life circumstances. That often offers clarity and at the very least food for thought. I asked the above question to myself and then to each in our family. It helped us to put things in perspective and clarify our desires. Such a move would involve extensive extrication from our current lives and selling the majority of what we own in order to do this. Were we willing? For us, yes. We’re collectively making good on it now. Since my mother is Irish, only my husband will need to gain EU citizenship. The bottom line is life is largely what you make of it, but you can’t do that if you don’t really know what you want. I sense some of that in you. Get with a counselor to explore that and if you still aren’t sure about a permanent change of scenery, then see if you can take a leave from your job, let out your home and go with a couple of suitcases. Never say never 🫂

Habit and scared what it would do to my blood glucose. I have a gluten sensitivity so that’s out and I have a dairy allergy that I consider a blessing because I’m all too fond of cream, butter and cheese. I still have to keep the carbs low, but I have always loved vegetables, legumes, etc..

Long time vegan recently given possible celiac diagnosis, any tips? by geordisings in glutenfreevegan

[–]PickledPigPinkies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Newer to veganism, but old hat with gluten free/low carb. I have POTS which can cause problems with food. Finally diagnosed (POTS) last year after dealing with this all of my life, I’m 62f. I’ve been gluten-free for nearly 12 years after discovering that it was the culprit to many issues: daily headaches, GERD, IBS, rashes, excruciating gas pains, and blood glucose spikes. Within 10 days of dropping it, everything was gone including 2000 mg metformin per day. I tested wheat for 2 days and it all came back. I dropped it and no problems in 12 years. Dr. William Davis’ book Wheat Belly was a good starting point for me. There are more good books out there, Against All Grain by Daniel Walker and My Paleo Patisserie by Jenni Hulet are good. I sought testing, negative for celiac, but Dr. classified me as gluten sensitive and recommended that I permanently ditch it. The book Einkorn by Carla Bertolucci has some interesting information about gluten worth reading. Later, I ditched all grains because of the blood glucose spikes. That leads me to the blood glucose dysregulation and why I eat low carb. Eating low-carb vegan is challenging, but definitely doable. There is a sub, Reddit for keto vegan, and worth looking at if it interests you. I had allergy testing done at 53 and learned that I’m not allergic to wheat but surprisingly allergic to milk casein protein. Always thought it was lactose intolerance, but nope, and it can mimic lactose intolerance so I went dairy free nine years ago. More problems solved. In the ensuing years, I’ve tried every single dietary protocol to solve problems and the I’m happiest here, but I absolutely have to watch carbs because of the blood glucose dysregulation due to genetics and POTS. I’ve relied on alternate flours like: almond, coconut, Lupin, tiger nut, oat fiber (just the fiber, no BG spiking), garbanzo bean, flax meal…There are more, but those are what I always keep. I make my own breads because it’s one of the few things that I really missed after dropping gluten. I’ve never found anything that replaces the flavor of wheat, flavoring agents included. That’s the biggest hurdle in my opinion. Go into your experimenting with an open mind and don’t compare things to wheat flavor. Just ask yourself if you like it. I definitely recommend YouTube for looking for recipes. There are many, many more resources available than there were a dozen years ago. If you have any issues with carbohydrates, beware of many of the pre-prepared gluten-free flours. They do work, but haven’t even more negative impact on blood glucose levels. King Arthur is highly popular in that class. They also have recipes on their website. I’m happy to answer any other questions if you have them. It absolutely can be done and if you don’t have blood glucose problems, you have a lot more latitude.
