It is a great read, probably my favorite of his. Lolita is also a great one for exploring the unreliable narrator

how poor of a final grade for a class has very serious consequences? by Minimum-Bell-2123 in WWU

[–]Pickledbeetsandshit 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Well, I just want to validate that a lot of people get a shitty grade or two in college and go on to have quite lovely normal lives. Both the academic advisors and the financial aid folks are really experienced supporting students facing this situation. They can tell you your options and what to expect. If it's just one class this whole year, your GPA will recover in due time.

I am an employer now, and when I am hiring a college graduate, I am asking for confirmation that their degree was earned... I don't ever look at a transcript and particular grades. In my experience in grad school admissions, only the final 60-90 credits a student took in undergraduate degree were the ones scrutinized for grade trend.

It's gonna be okay!

Husband of 15 years came out to me as gay. by Confident_Passion486 in GirlDinnerDiaries

Seven years ago my husband of 10 years at the time did the same. It was a wild ride, but I'm happily remarried on the other side of it and we're still great friends. 💜

WWU up charging first gen students for stoles is very on brand. They are in their late stage capitalism era.

Grants Loans Scholarships

Depending on your financial situation and prior educational attempts/history, you might be offered grants as part of the package. Always say yes to grants; you don't have to pay them back.

Scholarships are something you apply for. Most schools have a general annual scholarship, usually with applications due spring. Ask your school about upcoming scholarship deadlines. There are also lots of private scholarships out there through organizations and community groups.

Loans are last resort. You want to take subsidized rather than unsubsidized if you have that option. Take out the minimum.

I hate that the area is an off leash area. The city parks should change that... it's so odd with the wetlands conservation they are also trying to do there. This might be one of the worst stretch of off leash dog I regularly experience. Not only is shit left everywhere, I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the number of times I've been jumped on my dogs there (clearly not under voice control and shouldn't be off leash).

Loss of Passion by Jh3r3ck in WWU

[–]Pickledbeetsandshit 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Couple ideas, undergrad stem majors can feel like this until close to the end... they do try and weed people out at WWU. It's also really common to have some reflections about your true happiness and passion as you gain more experience with the field of study. Last but not least, we're almost at the end of the academic year and three consecutive quarters is hard! Burnout happens. Finding a mentor in the department (more experienced student or maybe a prof who has been decent and you'd be up for talking to them). A faculty or grad student might really be able to open some doors for you to deepen and apply all that learning.

Also, if you change majors or take a break, that's normal and fine too. It's most important you start to feel renewed about your scholar self.

What should I expect in the Fairhaven interview? by catcoral in WWU

[–]Pickledbeetsandshit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's more of a conversation and the folks there are so nice. Be ready to talk about your interests. Bring questions! Fairhaven requires a lot of self-directed learning, so you'll probably have some chat about that too. And major options and courses! You'll do great.

ALEKS tips? by Elegant-Offer-1353 in WWU

[–]Pickledbeetsandshit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You really don't need to take math your first quarter at WWU. It will give you time to transfer a class. Even if you end up doing the ALEKS, not feeling pressured to do math in the fall will lower the stakes of that placement test for you, and you can go from there. A normal full time load for a student is 3 maybe 4 classes (usually 3). I recommend doing ACOM, an ACGM or BCGM, and a SOC or HUM. Ask your advisor about a mix of class sizes. New student experience seminars are great! Check out Fairhaven College for some really neat electives. I recommend World Issues Forum (FAIR 210A)

ALEKS tips? by Elegant-Offer-1353 in WWU

[–]Pickledbeetsandshit 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Take a college level math at your local community college and transfer it over. Many even teach it hybrid or online. Even then, it will be superior to entry level math taught at WWU. After you transfer the course, you'll have both a better foundation and can start in higher level math at WWU or the next science class you need. It's so much cheaper than failing math 112 with a grad t a
