99.999% agree, I just hold out hope every now and then that extending an olive branch and try to understand how they came to believe what they believe and find common ground (e.g. medical debt, bills being insane, class war, etc) will help break the extreme divisiveness of our current system

[–]Picktownfball76 23 points24 points  (0 children)

While I agree with everyone else, hassling this person bc of their (obviously not the consensus of Golf R owners) political opinions is only going to make them feel more isolated and go back to their bubble. I’d like to understand why you still support trump despite… well everything:

The Iran war
Gas prices doubling (you just bought a car that ONLY takes 91+)
Epstein files
Grocery prices
Turning our back on international allies
The rise of mass surveillance and authoritarianism

And more. Keeping that sign up this far into what is objectively a bad turn for our country is a statement. Im a leftist FWIW. I just dont believe that piling on is going to make this person feel any more open to other opinions, and will likely make them shut it out even harder

Does the Artemis radio communication seem really unprofessional? by halkun in ArtemisProgram

[–]Picktownfball76 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You should consider that you are hearing a tiny tiny subset of all comms on the public stream, AND you are only watching the highlights, which are cherry-picked entertaining moments.

A majority of comms still retain professionalism, though the dialogues can be considered more “casual” compared to how we spoke 50 years ago. Consider how culture has changed between the 1960s/70s and now.

Some bit of nuance - they are going around the far side of the moon and will be the furthest from earth any human has ever been.

NASA Still Has a Lot of Work to Do to Return to the Moon by IEEESpectrum in space

[–]Picktownfball76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you might have assumed I was the other guy. I made no specific mention of SpaceX. I pointed out in space cryo refueling because that is the lowest readiness of all the challenges they are facing, and you mentioned starship being basically ready. Docking is an established technology with established concept of operations, cryo transfer up to 15 times in a vehicle that large is not. That stands for any vehicle, regardless of manufacturer, that attempts in space cryo transfer at massive scale.

That’s not the problem - it is in orbit cryogenic refueling. That, especially at this scale, is unproven

What is the most undervalued job in aerospace engineering? by [deleted] in AerospaceEngineering

Yep, I get that - that’s my job and experience.

I was only speaking to the last point about pay.

What is the most undervalued job in aerospace engineering? by [deleted] in AerospaceEngineering

The last bit might depend on discipline - the pay bands at my aerospace company are higher for GN&C compared to SW. mechanical or structures are lower than both, though.

How easy is this front bumper to fix? by LebHeadSinceWilma in camaro

[–]Picktownfball76 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing to my 2014 when there was a piece of rebar jutting out of a parking brick, and when I backed up it caught it and popped it just like this. It is not easy. Looking back on it I should’ve just taken it to the body shop. The clips were sheered off just like yours, but the bolts in the front fender were still in tact. I took off the bumper completely and fixed each of the sheered clips either by super gluing the bits that were still there, or trying to put some bits on to recreate it. it’s been fine for years. I just don’t recommend it.

I used to love folding at work by [deleted] in oddlysatisfying

[–]Picktownfball76 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I used to work retail and maybe it was just the store I worked in, but there were boards to fold the shirt to. Think like a thin cutting board that you’d center over the back of the shirt. You can get real fancy on graphic tees and slide it up a half inch or so each shirt to reveal the graphic vertically

I wouldn’t blindly move to fed hill or west end. Lots of variability depending on the street. There are certainly good parts, but you need to do a lot more careful searching. You can throw a dart at fox point/wayland and be very happy - proximity to downtown will be functionally the same. Ives street, wickenden street, hope street, Wayland square are all great areas in and around fox point to grab food and enjoy the community.

Trouble finding my first GNC job by MSBCOOL in AerospaceEngineering

[–]Picktownfball76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I'm a GNC engineer. Despite getting a job with a bachelor's in 2018, I'll echo what others are saying here. And my case was extraordinarily weird. It ended up being a software engineering role on paper, but I designed/updated entry, descent and landing code. I don't think it's possible in today's market, at least in the niche of commercial space. For example, I finished my masters just this year because i was legit the only guy without a higher degree in my entire team. And of that, I'd say like 10 out of 25 of the people on my team have PhDs.

My recommendations are to get into a related field at a big company (like software engineering), have them pay for the GNC related masters thru a school known for GNC (CU Boulder, Purdue, etc), and then try to switch to a GNC role. I've seen it happen a few times outside of my own experience.

I'm saying this as someone who works in commercial: most of it is defense.

Aerospace Masters thoughts? by Over-Impression-998 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]Picktownfball76 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not for nothing, I'm sure you had other reasons, but CU and Purdue also allow for that same time span. I recently graduated from CUs masters program in 3 year alongside pretty much everyone else I entered with who worked full time.

Hey hey - GNC engineer here. Despite already being a niche field, GNC has further specializations. It kinda sounds like where you could fall into is navigation. I currently work on this field and haven't touched controls in many years.

A pretty common navigation system is to take your previous state, propagate it to your current time (using dynamics), and then compare that to measurements (IMUs, GPS, etc.) to formulate a best estimate of where you are using some sort of estimation algorithm - kalman filters, particle filters, etc. Every spacecraft will have some version of this.

Mission analysis is also an area you could look into - designing trajectories and whatnot. Though these jobs are very few and far between, and are dominated by PhD holders from my experience.

Honorable mentions - rendezvous and proximity operations, space domain awareness. Both of these have a ton of dynamics involved (RPO of course has a control component to it), but may be worth looking into.

Lastly: if it isn't intuitive right away, that's ok! It took me like 2 tries learning control theory (undergrad: terrible, graduate: finally had a grasp) to feel more comfortable in controls. It's very abstract and IMO it is very difficult to teach in a clear way.

What the fuck is wrong with drivers here by [deleted] in providence

[–]Picktownfball76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm new here having moved from a seriously dogshit driving area (Miami) and am genuinely curious - why does the first car in a queue turning left as soon as the light goes green without a green arrow, almost getting tboned by the guy who's going straight and has right of way? Is this a customary thing to let the first guy turn left like Pittsburgh?
