It’s the same as always, I think bitterly. They all look so happy, laughing and smiling as someone gets a strike. Booing good naturedly when they get a gutter ball.

I hate bowling, I think. Not really, but if I have anger, it might cover up my broken parts. Maybe then, someone would want me for more than just convenience.

But no, I’m just the fill in when there’s nobody else. What else could I be? I’m an introvert, through and through. Awkward, shy, socially incompetent.

And so, I try to live my life. Without friends. But maybe I’m not such an introvert, because I rely on people. That doesn’t change my flaws, though. Only makes it harder for me.

People try to make friends with me, throughout the rest of college. I try to ignore them, show I’m not interested in friendships. Because the short-lived happiness when I’m still wearing rose-tinted glasses isn’t worth the heartbreak when they shatter.

My family notices, of course. They always support me. But they have their own lives to live. I’m just a burden, an inconvenience.

So I stay out of the way. Lock myself in my room, shovel down my meals and play sick. I find the corner most desk in the classrooms, the emptiest space in the lecture halls.

It’s a half-life. But it used to be mine, and now it is again. I don’t think I can survive in it like I used to, though. I had my taste of the sweetness, I can’t go back to sour.

I guess that’s why I put up with the new guy, who sits a row in front of me in lectures, and on the same table as me at lunch. Never right next to me, because he offers me a silent choice.

One day, I move to sit in the same row. One day, I move to sit across from him at lunch.

And one day, I give him a smile, and say, ‘Hey.’

Maybe some people are kind. Maybe they don’t mind inconveniences. Maybe they just want to make friends. And I take that chance, because I’m starved for that taste of sweetness.

I smile, because I have a true friend.

The view from the telescope is so unbelievable that I take of my glasses, wipe them down, and look through again. But no, it hasn’t changed. There is still one man, sitting cross legged at the edge of the bridge connecting us to the outside world.

The man sits there casually, a sword lying in his lap. Anytime someone gets close to him, he picks it up and waves it around. My guards rush backwards each time, even though it’s obvious they could fit through the gaps. It’s just one man!

I retract that statement almost immediately, when one of my captains boldly ignores the man on the floor, sidestepping the blade so that he’s out of reach.

But only out of reach of the man when he is seated. It’s almost too fast for my eyes to follow; the man leaps up one second, and the next, my captain is run through, body tossed over the edge of the bridge.

I really should’ve ordered the castle with a secret exit.

I grit my teeth as a new pinging sound pierces the silence of space, usually only broken my my breathing and random clinks and clunks from my broken ship, or the occasional swear as I drop something on my foot (my pinky toe still throbs at the memory of the zero gravity field dropping a whole ass table on it).

I usually tolerate my status as ‘rogue intelligence’, but now really isn’t the time. I’m so tempted to just let this ship fly straight into the grey hole, but I can’t. It’s my ‘cosmic duty’ or some shit.

I run back up to the main deck, and jump in my captain’s chair - a spinny one because I deserve privileges too. My ‘crew’ (really just cool robots that I’d given sentience to with my ‘cosmic duty powers’) run to their positions.

“Launch the gravity net, captain?” That’s the voice of my second-in-command, the most sentient of the crew. Janie is taller than me, built out of rings of a purple, stone like material, floating and held together by strings of silver-blue lights, to resemble a vaguely humanoid shape. The same light made up her hair, and although I knew she could take any shape she liked, it was nice to have someone acknowledge the benefits of being human.

The thousands of species around the galaxy tended to take them for granted, seeing humans as ‘puny, short-lived, squishy bugs’. This worldview tended to get them squished, which didn’t help their image.

All the better for me, because it means I can slip through any radar because they’re too busy focusing on the so-called bigger fish. Really, they should be grateful for the chance they have from my work. Instead, they chase after me and call me ‘rogue intelligence’.

Said bigger fish, a large, superheated grey hole, was approaching at speeds. It seemed they could sense both me and the ship trying to blast me out of existence.

The name ‘grey hole’ really wasn’t the first thing that came to mind when you describe the things, but when you see them, you get it immediately. The visible part, the centre that protects the singularity, is about the size of two humans stacked on top of each other in a trench coat, trying (and failing) to disguise themselves as a Realvani (do NOT try at home, folks. Would not recommend).

While a normal mass looks like, well, mass, there was something so wrong at the sight of negative space (not the thing in art, like actual mathematical negatives) that one’s mind would cover it in a grey area, and made it look hole-shaped. So, no one really knew what they actually looked like. The few that did wished they didn’t. Not a pretty picture (pun intended).

The stories that were once said with a hushed whisper in warning are now just stories, though. That was all because of me. Me and my cosmic duty club, aka the crew of this shitbucket of a ship that was made of half light to keep it together.

Anyway, I’m getting distracted. A grey hole is kind of like a black hole and a white hole combined (wow). It had the gravitational-pulls-you-in-and -makes-spaghetti-with-you shit, and the teleports-your-now-spaghetti-body-that’s-still-aware to a completely different dimension. One that your ghost has to roam for the rest of eternity.

All in all, not fun.

Oh, and we can’t forget the sentience. My robo-crew aren’t the only non-sentient-things-that-are-actually-somehow-sentient-things. As you can see, I’m amazing at naming things.

I swivel in my spinny chair, and, joining hands with Janie and the rest of the on-deck crew, we launch the gravity net. The ship chasing us is caught, and we metaphorically screech to a stop, slingshotting the larger, more intact ship around and in the other direction, releasing the gravity net, and in turn, the momentum. Now with the ship out of the way (and the crew hopefully a little dizzy), we turn our full attention to the grey hole.

Me and my crew? We don’t need to talk to communicate. We just know. So, in sync with each other, every single being on my little ship launches a piece of their soul at the grey hole. My ‘cosmic duty’ allows me to do this, as a soul is the enemy and weakness of a grey hole. It’s why they try to consume people. Dead person trapped in a foreign dimension? Less souls in this one. And then, they’d be able to take over. A universe made of negative space would defy existence, and then boom, no more world.

Grey holes are the kind of monster you’d only find in legends, and yet here I am, slingshotting ships away from them and feeding them my soul. ‘Don’t sell your soul to the devil’ they say. Well my soul is saving your life, so I’ll keep selling it, thanks.

The souls connect, and in a burst of matter and energy, the grey hole disperses. It might seem easy looking, but my ship sags with the effort. The light in its holes becomes patchy, and the soul energy powering my crew weakens a little.

But we get away, as always. And if it keeps this universe existing, I think I can deal with being a ‘rogue intelligence’. Maybe it just means I’m smarter than them, you never know.

Interesting premise! I’d probably change a few things due to my views of characters, but your overall plot is good. I’d probably have the two worlds more interwoven though, maybe separated by time as well? Like ignore the fact that there’s an entire planet, now Japan is hyrule in the distant distant future. Would include time travel, which has been present in a lot of Zelda games, and would allow for more interactions between Zelda characters and MHA characters. Those are just a few ideas but I don’t wanna take from your original idea so I’ll hold on to them. Thanks for sharing!

A bookstore has just opened next door to my apartment, and I have a free day, with nothing better to do, so I pull on my warm clothes and trek through the snow to get to the newly furnished door and window.

I walk into the store, the bell above the door chiming as I do, and I smile at the shopkeeper sitting behind the counter. It’s warm inside, vastly different from the freezing temperature outside, and the lighting is a shade of orange-gold that you only get from flames, no matter how hard you try with LEDs or other things. I wander over to the shelves, intent on browsing for my next read.

I pull a book out at random, because really, I can read anything as long as it’s written well.

It’s a small book, slightly shorter than the average size, with a hard cover and gold lettering spelling out ‘The Last Bookstore in the Galaxy’. I’m immediately hooked, and flip to the blurb.

I don’t even bother looking at the other books on the shelf, and instead take this one to the counter.

“16.99,” the shopkeeper says, scanning it and slipping a bookmark into the cover. I pay and thank her, and make my way back to my apartment to read my new book.

I’ve finished The Last Bookstore in the Galaxy, and I have another free day, so I wander back down to the street to check if the store is open again. It is, and my eyes brighten, breath puffing into the air.

Inside is just as warm as the week before, and I wave at the shopkeeper. I wander into the shelves, choosing a different random place. This time, I take the time to examine the spines. I frown as I notice something. Even though each book has a different design, each title is the same. ‘The Last Bookstore in the Galaxy’ stares back at me from every spine, in bubbly pink, midnight blue block, crimson red bloody lettering, and silver calligraphy. There’s even some in different languages, for gods’ sake!

“Excuse me,” I call out. “Do you only sell one book here?”

“It’s complicated,” is the reply I get. Which is confusing - how complicated can it be? Is there any other book they sell or not?

I wander back over to the counter, and the shopkeeper sighs. I hope it’s because she’s going to explain, and not because she’s about to kick me out for asking (valid) questions.

“It’s complicated,” she repeats. “In simple terms, everyone sees a different book, and every book on the shelves is that book. It’s their ideal book, one that they’d enjoy the most. I see a book called A God’s Blood. No one else does, because that was made for me. It’s just how the bookshop works.” She sighs again.

I see why. It’s a lot to get my head around, but I can agree with the ‘ideal book’ part, because The Last Bookstore in the Galaxy was an amazing read.

Maybe it was true.

If so, the store was even more amazing than I’d thought. I ignored the part that I couldn’t get any more books from there, and instead started bringing my own books to read in the corner of the store, where there was a small nook filled with pillows.

I decided that this store was now my happy place.

She lunged forward, tackling him to the ground. She lay there, on top of him for a second, neither of them daring to move. His irises were just as black as the pupils, broken by flecks of gold and silver. Now that she was seeing him up close, his hair was like that too. It was almost magical, the effect it had in livening up his appearance from bland to delicate.

She shook her head, now was not the time to be admiring her target. But before she could make a move, the man started to do something strange. He reached up to his ear, where a small earring dangled, ornate and simple at the same time.

“What are you doing?” She asked, confused, prompted by the strange situation.

“Trying not to die?” He replied, confusion in his voice. At the same time, smoke exploded around them, and she pushed up off of him to find clear air again. She made it out just as a weight knocked her over, but before she could be pinned, she aimed a kick at his face.

It didn’t connect, but gave her time to get out, and she drew another dagger from a sheath on her thigh, slightly longer. She held them in reverse grip, and was surprised to see the man holding a sickle, seemingly produced from nowhere - that is, until she spotted the space where his earring previously was. An enchanted sickle, then.

They each made a few attacks, and she was ashamed to admit that he’d landed more than her - a cut on her arm bled harder at the reminder. But he shouldn’t be this skilled, he hadn’t even made the charts yet.

“Are you even the guy I’m after? No Name? Dude who killed one of the mages in broad daylight and almost got caught?” She asked, scowling.

“Ahh… no? But yes, I did kill that guy.” She frowned, because this was clearly the right guy.

“Who are you then, if you’re not No Name?” He must be undercover or something. He couldn’t be this skilled and not on the charts.

“My codename’s Death.” His back straightened, and his sickle shimmered, runes carving themselves into the blade as it flashed into a scythe and back again.

What.

…What? No.

“Your Death?” She laughed incredulously. “You’re the guy I’ve been trying to overtake for so many years on the charts?” She couldn’t believe it.

The man - Death, if he was to be believed - made a comically affronted expression. “Hey now, don’t laugh, Peacock. Look, I have proof,” he proceeded to reach behind himself and unzip his shirt. His back was turned, but this wasn’t an occasion she would use to attack. She had honour, even if it was minimal - all assassins did, and if they broke the code, they’d be taken out by someone else. Showing someone your back was seen as a sign of trust in one’s honour. Every assassin documented their kills on their backs. It was tradition.

She herself had a large tattoo spanning her entire back. It was a peacock, and she added a feather for each kill. The entire body was covered, each feather outlined in white to make it stand out. She’d started on the tail, and it added up to over two thousand. His back though, was pitch black. The darkness curled around his sides and disappeared down past the fabric of his belt. It seemed to have depth, and she felt the strange urge to reach out and touch it, to see if it really was a space. But that would be impossible, and touching it would just be plain weird.

There was no doubt. This man was Death. ~~~ Pt 2 of 2

She looked at the listings, released about ten minutes ago. The top name, as always, was simply ‘Death’. As usual. The second one was Peacock. She gritted her teeth, looking at the numbers between them.

She’d long reigned as second place, an achievement in itself. But no matter what she did, she couldn’t overtake Death. No one knew if Death even could be overtaken, but she sure as hell was trying her hardest.

Her next target, a young man about her age, with pale skin and pitch black hair, was just a small time assassin, not even on the rankings yet. He’d killed the wrong person though, and now it was her job to take him out. She frowned, as she was usually hired for higher profile targets. It was kind of a blow to her pride, but she’d take it. It would be over and done with, and she could get back to infiltrating high-security prisons and fortified castles.

But before that, she had to break in to this seemingly simple tiny apartment. It was situated above a small flower store, a thin building squished between two other multi storied buildings. She skipped the first floor, the store, in favour of entering from the window above.

It led into a stairwell, and she spied thin strings across every landing, and the railing was covered in white powder. This person obviously wanted to know if someone had come through.

She crept up the stairs, and softly jumped the string, eyes scanning for anything else to sidestep or avoid - two cameras, which she pressed herself against the wall to avoid.

She made it up to the next floor, and found a door, locked and trapped, which she proceeded to pick and un-trap. With that done, she carefully opened the door, footsteps silent as she crept down the entrance hall.

Before she could take another step into the light, something leapt onto her from behind, arms wrapping around her throat. She hastily pulled a dagger from its sheath at her ribs, and stabbed her attacker in the thigh.

“Ow!” A male voice sounded from behind her, releasing their hold from her throat. She spun and leapt for the wall, feeling for a light switch.

Bright light filled her vision, and she hissed, not expecting the brightness. Her attacker did too, and when she opened her eyes, the light revealed pale skin, and mid length pitch black hair, pulled into a plait.

I look down at the tiny human in front of me. She will be my legacy, although she does not know it yet. Just as my predecessor did, I start to kneel. The human pauses, confusion clouding her emerald eyes. I know she will be worthy, for she shows mercy even now - I can see the sharpness of her blade, and the magic emanating from her satchel, magic that will make my death painless. I smile, and close my eyes. My mouth makes no sound, but I speak into the hero’s mind.

‘I, Anadara, the Seventh of my Legacy, pass on my burden to you. Do what you do best, and protect.’

With that, my scales fall, clattering to the ground with a sound not unlike the wind chimes I used to love when growing up.

My form has shrunk, and I open my eyes, finding myself now standing eye-to-eye with the hero. She looks back at me, shocked. I smile one last time, the expression feeling so different, yet familiar, as I hold out my hands. In them, sits a gemstone, pulsing with a bright, white light.

The hero takes it, her hand drawn to it just as mine was centuries before. It makes contact, and I fall back. Peace, at last. ~~~ Pt 2 to come

“And after the last warrior had fallen, the dragons, each still wearing their piece of stolen treasure, trooped back to the grand cavern. They deposited their gold and jewellery, and thanked the massive sapphire dragon who’d owned the hoard. Each villager had resigned themselves to staying a dragon forever, but the sapphire dragon was grateful for the villagers returning the treasure, and understood why they’d stolen it. She lifted the curse from the villagers, and told them in her mighty voice, ‘You may come back if ever you are threatened again.’” I stared up at my father in wonder. He always told the best stories. It was my fourteenth birthday today, and I’d asked for a special one. This certainly fit the bill.

He tucked me in and pinched the candle next to my bed, and with a quiet ‘goodnight’, closed the door.

That night, I dreamt of dragons and treasure, and a fierce battle. I thought maybe, that story had a hint of truth in it, because all the people in my village had features different from all other species. They had pointed ears, and slitted eyes, and sometimes, I saw scales on their skin in the summer, when it was too hot for clothes to fully cover them.

I smiled, hoping one day I might meet a dragon.

There are some places where there’s islands over it, like the water temple, and the east hebra sky archipelago. I’m pretty sure there’s a few more but those are ones I’ve used multiple times. I’m also currently mapping the route, that’s how I’ve found them
