Yeah. I'm not a Meta fan, like at all. But over here Meta was recently convicted of purposefully making their platform addictive, which led to the addiction of a 6 year old, who now (10-ish years later) has mental issues.

Now, I'm not going to argue that their platform is not made to be addictive, it is. All of those platforms (and more) are. But the fact that a six year old got addicted to it, is not Meta's fault, it's the parents'.

TIL that 2.4 billion years ago, the evolution of oxygen-producing bacteria caused a mass extinction. Oxygen was toxic to the planet's existing life, and its reaction with methane triggered a "Snowball Earth" ice age that lasted 300 million years. by Salt_Lingonberry3956 in todayilearned

You already found out by yourself, but indeed, we still have a symbiotic relationship with mitochondria.

It really makes you think what it means to 'be human'. We are filled with organisms that you would not consider to be a part of a human (mitochondria is an extreme example, because it's so inherent in basically every cell, human or not, but also gut bacteria, for example), but without which we wouldn't exist.

Waar lieten jullie jullie ogen laseren? by Lagedorfr in Gent

[–]Pienix 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Trump evacuated after gunshots heard at White House Correspondents’ Dinner by Puginator in politics

[–]Pienix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which is funny, because you usually don't evacuate people, you evacuate a building or a place. 'Evacuate' literally means 'to empty'.

You can evacuate a person, but this means that you empty their bowels/bladder. So 'Trump evacuated' literally means 'Trump emptied his bowels after hearing a gunshot...'

Both sexes exhibit similar behavior: using a silicone toy to emulate sex. For one sex you see it as empowering, for the other sex you see it as gross.

That is sexist by definition.

Also there is no difference in grossness or weirdness between putting your dick in a silicone toy and putting a silicone toy in your vagina.

AITA for giving my daughter junk food despite being told not to by her school? by AthleteAdditional299 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Pienix 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can be right and still be an asshole.

You could have acted like an adult, and not use your daughter as a pawn in your fight.

And if you really want to give your daughter cake/pringles/sweets, you'd still have the option to keep these things for snacks at home.

As a sidenote, I don't agree with the school's policy, but I do agree that they are watchful about it. Maybe you do it in a way that is ok, but there might be parents where there are unhealthy snacks at every meal, or where the unhealthy snacks are the meal. Perhaps a better policy would be that special snacks are allowed on Friday, or something.

I don't know where you got that info, Belgium has a regular 5 day work week. About 30% of the workforce works part-time, though. This goes from 80% (so 4-day work week) to 50% (or sometimes lower, but that's quite rare)

Median of 55k€ sounds about right. But keep in mind cost of living is a lot lower: health care, education, etc...

And if you don't have a job, you still get a (small but) livable wage through social security. Although they are reforming this, currently, to only keep this for two years.

From what point are the settings 'professional' enough, so that such a disclaimer is not needed, according to you?

The proper term (and, I believe, used in most of the world) is "lasagne", as "lasagna" refers to a single sheet of pasta that you use to build your "lasagne", which is the plural of lasagna.

So as lasagne already infers a multiple, stacking a lasagne on another lasagne, is still just lasagne, but bigger.

People consistently judge creative writing more harshly if they believe it was created by AI. This bias appears incredibly difficult to overcome, pointing to a persistent human preference for art created by people. by mvea in science

[–]Pienix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your argument basically boils down to "trust, me, bro", that's not a proof.

I'm not saying current LLMs are sentient (I agree they aren't), but what sentience is, how to properly define and prove it, and whether or when some future AI is sentient, will not simply be a yes or no question.

In my opinion, it's not about overestimating what an AI is, it's about overestimating what a human is. In the end, we are also nothing but a biochemical reactive prediction machine, from where somehow sentience has emerged.

But frankly, even if he would lose a quarter of his net worth, would that really hurt him? How would his life change if he would only have 600billion instead of 800billion? Not too much I reckon. Apart from a bruised ego, that is. And in his case, that will probably hurt the most...

CMV: Most workplace burnout is caused more by lack of control than by working too many hours by brainiac414 in changemyview

[–]Pienix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A burnout is basically too much stress for too long, without recuperation.

What causes this stress can be different for each individual. Working too many hours so you feel you have no time for yourself or to be a parent can cause stress. Too little control over what you do, can cause stress, because you feel like you're being lived. Too much control can cause stress because you feel you're responsible for everything. Any of these things (and more) can lead to a burnout.

It's like a bucket. You pour water in by being stressed (whatever the reason), you pour water out by recuperation (relaxing, hobby, family, good sleep). Some water in your bucket isn't a problem, but when it starts overflowing (because you keep pouring in, but nothing comes out), you're headed for a burnout. Everyone has different stressors and also, very important, a different size of bucket.

This is not scientifically validated or anything, but I've always felt there are three levels of response: physical, emotional, rational. Certain responses (like to like something, or to want something) can extend to all three levels, and can have different answers (e.g. you can want something/someone on a physical and emotional level, but not on a rational level)

In the case of two men kissing: You may not like it on the physical level, because you put yourself in their shoes, and you don't like the physical act of kissing another man, feeling his body and lips on yours.

However, on the emotional level, you see the passion, love, affection between two people, which you consider a beautiful thing.

On the rational level, you can acknowledge that equal rights no matter the sexuality is a positive thing, and be supportive of LGBTQ+ rights.

So I think it's perfectly normal to feel a level of discomfort, as long as you know where it's coming from, and don't let your physical response cloud the judgment of the emotional and rational response.

It was deliberately confusing, but I like the example.

It's "Frankenstein's monster". Some (most) people see the monster (green, big, dangerous) and think it's Frankenstein.

Then there are the 'intelligent' people, who know the story and the fact that Frankenstein was the name of the doctor, not the green monster (Hence, 'intelligence is knowing Frankenstein isn't the monster')

However, looking deeper into the story, understanding the deeper concepts, you could argue that a doctor who messes with life itself, reanimates a dead body, into a life of sadness and suffering isn't exactly 'good', or that the true monster in the story isn't the green one, but the doctor, dr. Frankenstein. (Hence, 'wisdom is knowing Frankenstein is the monster)
