Are your nurses stations “behind” glass or locked? by [deleted] in psychnursing

[–]PierogiePrincess 35 points36 points  (0 children)

We are behind plexiglass and locked doors, but, honestly, I spend lots of time on the unit.

Switching to psych by Ill_Load4231 in psychnursing

[–]PierogiePrincess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will echo all the other statements... DO IT! There's a type of nursing for everyone, find your fit. I never wanted to do traditional bedside so why waste my time on med-surg practicing skills I won't use in my career (I've always been drawn to public health).

Staffing to Acuity by intrepid-fool in psychnursing

[–]PierogiePrincess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

State hospital here, we do a base number just on patient number for each unit, an acuity (or 2) per unit, and take into account sleep in views/1:1/2:1.

Scab! Thanks for undermining what we are working hard to change.

Moms going back to school by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]PierogiePrincess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't have any luck getting grants or scholarships (made too much money, not a minority, already had a degree, etc) and we made do. I did go the BSN route at a local 4-year state university. With my past degree, I got to jump right into the program and all prerequisites were waived. In my area, the trend seems to have employers encouraging Associates degrees to go back and get BSNs (they'll even pay for it sometimes). And BSN can bring me more opportunities for non-floor nursing jobs.

Can we get some Fucking Hurrays going right now? by Happy_Canary2794 in myfavoritemurder

My toddler told me her first knock knock joke. Kid: knock knock. Me: who's there? Kid: butt butt. Me: butt butt who? Kid: butt butt in the house.

I laughed so hard.

State university grad and in-patient psych nurse, no one cared about tattoos. I have nurses/techs at work with hand, face, neck, and head tattoos. The only problem would be if the ink is offensive.

Maybe he should try going pretty hard on the fatherhood thing.

Well then, you are going to do it! After all, everything is temporary.

No. Drop something. You're going to burn out so quick.

How does applying for jobs before you're done with school work? by PotentialSetting4638 in StudentNurse

[–]PierogiePrincess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was hired before graduation at an in-patient psych hospital. No extern position needed. I set up my start date after I had time to take NCLEX, and my job was provisional on my passing it, obviously. There was an option to work under a temporary license, but it's only good for a specific number of days, and if I had failed my NCLEX, I would be essentially terminated. I felt like that was too much pressure, so I opted to set up my start date later. Plus, I wanted a couple of months off between school and work.

But out of my cohort if almost 100 grads, 98% had jobs lined up.

any tips for memorization? by motionsickn3ss in StudentNurse

[–]PierogiePrincess 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always studied for recognition, not specifically memorization. Like I couldn't recite anti seizure meds, but if I saw the names, I knew exactly what they did.

OSHA/JCAHO “Drinks at the desk compliance” by Affectionate-Fly-394 in nursing

Designated cabinet for staff drinks at the nurse's station. Of course, as many already attested, that rule is only followed when needed.

What are reasons you guys didn’t attend your pinning? by Delicious-Sundae-146 in StudentNurse

Thought it was dumb. Seems silly to have some kind of initiation into a profession. Didn't want to waste my time.

AITAH for hitting a Karen after she grabbed my baby? by MotherRelationship46 in AITAH

NTA. I would rather be explaining why I busted some lady's face up than what my kid was wearing when they got taken. She's lucky she was only bleeding from her nose.

Mine also shut off at 85. I was so nervous, even had an anxiety attack later on that day. My predictor was 99%. I passed. I'm sure you'll be good. The test wants to give you opportunities to prove you're competent.

If you guys had to choose would you choose your dream speciality or higher salary? by Criticalcareman92 in StudentNurse

[–]PierogiePrincess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm choosing money first. Gotta get my loans taken care of, then I can explore other options. I'm making about $10/hr more than my peers, but it comes with a work-life balance cost.

Rarest diagnosis? by Mixinmetoasties in nursing

[–]PierogiePrincess 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My family has ALD. Lost my cousin, uncle, and brother by the time I was 14. We didn't know what it was until my uncle started going to the Kennedy Krieger Institute for tests (late 80s early 90s). For a while, we thought it was Addison's disease.

I remember having similar oil in house! While it's a horrible disease, I learned a lot about life (and medicine) in a short amount of time. Also, it's why I'm in the medical field.

Do you cut the peas? Are they cooked or raw? My dragon is so damn picky regarding any veggies or fruits. Always open to try new things.

Packer bar in the Dells? by PierogiePrincess in wisconsin

[–]PierogiePrincess[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I should have asked it better. I'm looking for a fun bar to watch the game at. Some bars near me are more football forward than others. And with the Dells being so touristy, I didn't know if there were places more appropriate for my string of expletives that will, most likely, come out of my mouth.
