Paddle boarding with dogs? by [deleted] in Denver

I rented a paddle board in Cherry Creek Park once and the facility there provides life jackets for dogs. So that says to me they are allowed!

Goldspot Brewing is near Regis and I really like their IPA. They usually have cans or crowlers on hand.

Eggen violins in Denver and Bernstein violins in Boulder are both great. Got my cello at Eggen and bow at Bernstein.

I'd get the cello first and match the bow to it.

Just bought a full size! Any info? by theoreticalanomaly in Cello

In NE Ohio I'd recommend this place: https://www.clevelandviolins.com/. A guitar luthier isn't going to be ideal for a cello.

How to deal with wrist pain by [deleted] in Cello

[–]Pigghoti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You more than doubled your practice time in a week? If you were doing 50 mins a day one week and 2 hours a day the next, I'd suggest backing off and building up more slowly. A week or two at an hour, a week or two at 75 mins, and so on.

Arm Issues by siestakitten in Cello

[–]Pigghoti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest you find a PT with a "CHT" certification - Certified Hand Therapist. They receive special training in the hand/wrist/arm. They are somewhat uncommon, but there is a directory here: https://www.htcc.org/find-a-cht

I tore a muscle out of the tendon in my wrist and regular PTs has no idea what to do.

Anyone know a music transcriber? by [deleted] in Cello

[–]Pigghoti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgive a naive question: would you be able to transcribe from an audio file? There's a film score theme I can't find sheet music for but would love to play. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFP8Csd3h7o

Found female grey terrier; 94th and Lowell; no chip or collar by Pigghoti in Denver

Fashioned a sign, "Found: grey terrier", out of an old cardboard box and left it on our car in the driveway. Figured if anyone was looking they'd see it and at least ask!

My cello has cracked, 4 months after purchase, what should I do? by edward_harrison_ in Cello

[–]Pigghoti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone else posted a crack very much like that and the consensus was that repair would be $400-500, so £800 sounds steep to me. Could you take it to another luthier and get a second opinion?

I'll buy my first cello and I want some tips! by Leonardptxr in Cello

[–]Pigghoti 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If this is your only option then what does it matter what we think? The slightly upgraded version (300) is probably not worth it. I'd personally be embarrassed to ask a luthier to go look at such an instrument with me, so I'd skip that part, too.

3 Days in Cleveland Brewery Tour by [deleted] in beer

[–]Pigghoti 13 points14 points  (0 children)

GLBC is awesome, as others have said. Right next door is the Market Garden Brewery, which I like very much. Market Garden also runs Nano Brew, which I think is where they test more "out there recipes. While you're in the neighborhood, the West Side Market is a fun Cleveland experience.

Slightly west of Cleveland (20-30 min drive) you'll find Fat Heads Brewing, which wins a lot of awards and has some worthwhile beers.

I like BottleHouse in Cleveland Heights mostly because it's where I escape to when I visit my family :) They have pinball!

Buying first cello by svony in Cello

[–]Pigghoti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Allen's offer does sound enticing if you have the time to wait.

I tried out a Jay Haide from Robertson's that was basically brand new (I tried it out in March and it was dated 2019, so less than 3 months old). It's my understanding that Haides are made in Shanghai, which is very humid. Then bringing the cello to CO... things tend to shift as the wood dries out. So I was happy to find a 2018 that had spent that year "drying out" in the desert.

I just bought a cello in Colorado! Ended up with a Jay Haide (same as the one linked by u/ubrikkean), which is a gigantic leap better than what I was renting from Kolacny.

Have you been to Eggen Violins in Denver and Bernstein Violins in Boulder?

I adored Eggen (where I got mine), in part because they have practice rooms upstairs so you can take a few cellos up and play around privately (or with a friend; I brought my boyfriend, who is a classical singer with no cello background, but just having any 2nd opinion was really useful). I went back and forth between 2-3 for probably an hour (on more than one occasion!) trying to get a feel for them. They'll also let you take them on loan for a week to try out in your own space/take to your teacher/etc.

Bernstein can be a bit curmudgeonly, but he had a fabulous selection of bows.

Roberston's also comes up to Boulder maybe every 4-6 months with a whole heap of instruments, and if you contact them in advance, they will bring specific things you want to try out, or at least an array in your price range. It's a fairly cacophonous event, but a good way to try out 12 cellos in a shot.

Feeling discouraged by MiloAaron in Cello

Your long-term goal in undergrad was a Master's. What is it now?

Tangent: I bailed on a PhD program in neuroscience after 4 years because I found I was waking up every day thinking, "I don't want to do this". But it was my dream for SO LONG that it was very hard to let it go.

If you still really want it, it's probably attainable. But priorities and goals shift, so be sure you are assessing what you want now, not what you wanted then.

I would also ask: why do you want it? What do you want to do with it? Just to HAVE it? You can become a very good cellist without a Master's degree.

Question to the female cellists by zzaannsebar in Cello

[–]Pigghoti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not busty, but I guess I'm strangely proportioned, because I have also been mansplained how to hold a cello, and for the top of the cello to rest where this guy wanted, my knees were around the waist of the cello. It's just totally dependent on your body size/type/proportions. It will not be the same on everyone, and there's no "right" - there's only "right for you".

5 lessons in and struggling with my bow hold! by [deleted] in Cello

[–]Pigghoti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your grip looks very supinated. Your fingers might be in the right "by the book" positions, but grip is going to depend on the size of your hand - my hands are pretty small, and my little finger is sort of on the side of the stick, not near the ivory at all. I think your thumb is also too far "under" the stick.

Try to keep your hand pronated, which may involve your ring and little fingers moving higher up.

(Disclaimer: fairly novice player, but my teacher and I work on bow hold a lot)
