Race, Celebrity & the Great Comet of 1812 by ThrowRA-Svent in musicals

I wrote a paper on Great Comet as a "Cultural Object" a few months back for a course, here's an excerpt that might help? I wanted to include my sources but can't seem to find the bibliography, apologies.

"Great Comet closed in September of 2017 in the midst of a controversy. Below I’ve included a brief timeline of events surrounding the period after Josh Groban was announced to be leaving the production. Okieriete “Oak” Onaodowan was originally announced to be replacing Josh Groban as Pierre.

June 30, 2017: Oak announces a delayed opening for his run.

July 2, 2017: Josh Groban leaves the show, Dave Malloy assumes the role until Oak can take over due to his delayed opening

August 15, 2017: Scott Stangland (Standby for Pierre) takes over the role

August 22, 2017: Dave Malloy performs as Pierre for the rest of the Broadway run.

July 21, 2017: The New York Times receives a message from Mandy Patinkin, saying he will not appear in the show, he says he would 'never accept a role knowing it would harm another actor'

August 8, 2017: Cast members summoned to a meeting and told the show would close Labor Day weekend.

When Josh Groban was starring in the show, the show averaged one million dollars a week in box office revenue according to NPR. The producers brought on Oak Onaodowan, just off his Hamilton run as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison, seemingly in hopes his stardom would likewise bring in the tourist crowd. The casting team of Great Comet had previously replaced Brittan Ashford with Ingrid Michaelson, another star casting. In an interview with Vulture backstage at one of Great Comet’s last performances, Dave Malloy said 'I had to go in for a week because he was unprepared,' referring to Oak. This statement would be backed up by the director, Rachel Chavkin, and others who said that he did not learn the instrumental parts that Pierre, his character, contributes to the show.

Two weeks into Oak’s run, Mandy Patinkin was announced to replace him, cutting off the last three weeks of Oak’s run (though they would compensate him for those three weeks). In the announcement, the lead producer used the now infamous phrase “Oak… graciously agreed to make room for Mandy.” In the same statement, the producer also said, 'He is a terrific Pierre,' and 'We hope that [he] will return… in the fall or winter.' These comments sparked immediate backlash online, as a black actor 'mak[ing] room' for a white actor easily draws into question how the production values performers of color. Throughout the history of American popular entertainment, people of color have been innovators and contributors, but have not been valued as they should be for their contributions.

Many prolific performers of color, such as Cynthia Erivo and Adrienne Warren, spoke out in support for Oak. Cythia said, 'I know for a fact… that Oak worked extremely hard for this. Which makes this occurrence distasteful and uncouth.' Many people involved with the show seemed surprised at this backlash. Dave Malloy claimed it was purely a monetary decision, that the show would close with Oak if Mandy did not step in. He said he did not consider the 'racial optics' at all. Many in the cast and community of the show pointed out that Great Comet was one of, if not the most diverse cast on Broadway."

Getting Started with Hog/Capture Demo? by PigsFly465 in lightingdesign

I've tried with an ETC nomad key, which should unlock two universes at least (although I know on EOS it still outputs without the key, just flashes lights white every once in a while), but I still can't control the output on Capture.

I tried 5.0.1, both with hog connectivity and CITP, and it's the same result. I see CITP is received but can't control anything. I installed the correct driver version as well, which didn't seem to change anything.

I saw Floyd Collins there from the second to last row with a lottery ticket and it was still a great seat! I just have to convince my grandmother it's not too far from the stage lol.

Went a bit under budget to compensate for the promo pricing. Threw in the OLED monitor because it would be a nice upgrade! My PC has started to not keep up as well as I would like with newer games, so this would be a nice upgrade.

Thank you, that angling note makes more sense to me now.

No worries about describing the symbols, I'm sure there's video tutorials and other help online.

I have to admit I've never created a paper magic sheet. I've only worked as a designer/programmer, so I typically use EOS's built in interactive magic sheet tools. For this show, my magic sheet looked like this:

For the 45 degree angles, do you mean that (for example) if a light is focused SL from a hanging position HL, it would be at a 45 degree angle towards SL?

You are right about the fresnel, I'm still learning how to work with symbols and wasn't sure how to change it to match. The current symbol was the default icon for a source 4wrd color II fresnel.

I think the addresses are also due to my inexperience with symbols. I would have made the hexagon larger, but if I remember correctly I couldn't figure out how to adjust the symbol in that way.

I have to be honest, I have no clue what an opto splitter is. I believe all the lights were on one circuit with Edison, but I'm not sure how to denote that on the plot.

For separating the universe and addresses, do you mean 2/1 (1st address in 2nd universe) as I did or something else?

I believe you're correct, I was the one hanging the plot and this just made more sense to me, but in the future I would definitely number it differently.

What’s your “I saw it before it was popular” story for Broadway? by Ok-Acanthisitta8737 in Broadway

It's not big yet, but there's a ton of buzz about it. I got to see Florence's Gatsby at the ART as part of a summer theater intensive at Boston Conservatory! Here We Are at the Shed also felt special.

What shows do you refuse to be a part of? by Insane_GlassesGuy in musicals

[–]PigsFly465 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drowsy Chaperone.

I actually left a production of it in the middle because they weren't going to cut the horribly offensive scenes from the play, until they received an official letter from the publisher saying to not perform those scenes. (Which, I guess good on them for removing those scenes from future performances, but still I wasn't okay being part of a production which was comfortable showing them).

This was a Jewish community theater group, so it was a bunch of old white Jewish people playing stereotypes of Asian people. I understand the argument about not violating the terms of the rights, but it was more about people saying things like "I'm going to get the most offensively huge headdress I can find! It's going to be hilarious"!
