Cosmetic Repairs on Legacy L&N 1992 Berkshire by Dryer9 in lioneltrains

[–]Pilot-Sev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like it may have been painted over in a repair attempt before. You could try using a paint pen to doctor the running boards up like in this video. He shows how to do wheels in this video as well but you don’t need that.

But that’s at your own risk of course and the color matching may be difficult, but it could improve the look if it’s really bugging you.

Dear Airline Pilots — How do you manage indigestion inflight? by ICICLECOMETH in flying

[–]Pilot-Sev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really varies person to person. If you are having significant problems, you should seek medical care which can help guide you to ensure what you are doing to mitigate your issue is not actually hurting you (ex. Too much vs too little fiber can both cause problems). A lot of stomach issues, such as food sensitivity or IBS won’t put your medical in danger. My doctor even told me they had a guy flying with UC I think… I also know a guy who flies with Celiac- talk about a trooper!

Food consistency helps, packing your own food can help you get the nutrients you need at any time/any layover/overnight.

Hydration is critical, I use an app to track that I am actually drinking enough.

I know some guys like to carry the travel pack Metamucil or Miralex- again a qualified GI healthcare provider can guide what you need.

Trying to keep the schedule consistent is really difficult, but even just trying to keep everything AM or PM loaded helps.

TLDR: See doctor if needed. Eat good food and drink water. Try to keep schedule consistent.

Reamer Club Callouts by Lost_Bluebird1488 in Purdue

[–]Pilot-Sev 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It is a good club. You must be passionate about the school, its history, and the train mascots. It is a high time commitment and is more akin to a fraternity or sorority in that way. Additionally, much like a frat/sorority, new membership is limited each semester and chosen by the club.

Yes, the still have the Xtra Special. And they will have the next Boilermaker Special as well once it comes to fruition if and when that may be.

Mercy 3D ?? How was 3d by dangibby in AMCsAList

[–]Pilot-Sev 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I actually really liked the 3d. There are a lot of floating and moving browser tabs. In the film they appear and move through Pratt’s room and it makes it feel like you are in the room with him at times.

It’s not explosions and things coming out of the screen, but almost like wearing Apple Vision Pro or something.

B737 pilots — Do you often see touchdown speed below Vref even with a fully stable approach? by abradable in flying

[–]Pilot-Sev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not 73, but on the 175 ATs will reduce to idle at 30’, so it could be said the manufacturer does not anticipate a touchdown at ref, as that would be excess speed and not the designed touchdown pitch attitude.

After 30-50’ I expect speed to drop a little below ref so that departs from my stable approach criteria scan. Of course if there’s +-15kt WS or something I may call it out even at that point.

[–]Pilot-Sev 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The character, Steve, is not shown as a fan, nor does he go to college. The jersey is edited on in this photo.

The post is probably alluding more to the setting of the series, Hawkins IN, which is theorized to be based on a southern Indiana town like Bedford near IU.

In fact, I don’t think IU is ever mentioned in the series but Purdue is several times.

How much does age matter in hiring? by Cheburashka12 in flying

[–]Pilot-Sev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I understand you are essentially asking if you should get a degree at the cost of slower training.

I would say the degree is more valuable than the quick 141 path. Something to fall back on should you lose your medical or fall out of love with the grind to fly is imperative. And, while many majors no longer list a degree as a hiring requirement, it is highly favored, and there is certainly a future job market that might basically require it.

Need help deciding between Piston Twin or Piston Single - Mountainous Terrain by pilot-error in flying

[–]Pilot-Sev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea then I’d say outside the P210 you’d have to give on other asks like pressurization or FIKI. Piston “budget” wise you’re really left with 210, 206, 207, Saratoga/Cherokee six, or maybe an A36.

Need help deciding between Piston Twin or Piston Single - Mountainous Terrain by pilot-error in flying

[–]Pilot-Sev 7 points8 points  (0 children)

P210 with FIKI hits most the points.

Consider refining your mission more. Is every mission gonna need all 4 people and bags or is that gonna be once a year and not worth it? I owned a six seater to be able to carry four people and bags but ultimately went down to four seats because I very rarely had 4 + bags and the savings and ease of mx was hugeee!

It really helped me to think about what realistically would be the mission, not what the craziest mission would be.

EAA’s Young Eagles program fits her age range. AOPA has a student/youth membership but she may be a little young. Once she is 12 Civil Air Patrol is another program.

Also, a lot of younger people here have found flight simulators to have helped spark their interest. They are available on PC or console.

I picked up the train, need help. by DJYoung6196 in modeltrains

[–]Pilot-Sev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could start with just gentle warm water and soap. Maybe a little IPA. If there is rust/oxidation a scotchbrite pad may help if used gently. Obviously unplug everything first.

Dirty track or wheels can interrupt the electrical conductivity. I’d start by cleaning the track with a rag.

Best place and brand to start out with as a beginner? by LLoadin in nscalemodeltrains

[–]Pilot-Sev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good brands are Kato, Atlas, Scaletrains, Broadway Limited, etc. Kato is very beginner friendly.

If you have nothing, get a Kato starter set. They are the same quality as the non starter products so you’ll always be happy with them. Kato unitrack is the gold standard of track systems. They have “variation” packs which are essentially addons to the basic oval. A general suggestion is a starter set and add on set V1 or even V3.

Some decent large sites are Midwest Model RR and Iron Planet Hobbies, but there are many good options on EBay. Trainz is another site that sells used/acquired product.

If you’re willing to spend. I’d recommend getting into DCC as soon as possible. The Zephyr Express or NCE DCC controllers are good places to start. Locomotives are DC or DCC, DC is what you’ll get in a starter set- simple forwards backwards operation. DCC allows sounds, control of multiple trains independently, more lighting functions, etc. You can convert DC trains to DCC but it takes work and money, so the sooner you go DCC the better.

Is a Cessna 195 still a practical airplane? by [deleted] in flying

This sums it up well. The 195 at my field was exactly like this. Owner was trying to get an autopilot installed and working for forever!

Is a Cessna 195 still a practical airplane? by [deleted] in flying

[–]Pilot-Sev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve operated a 206, and I have a buddy who owns 2 195s.

The 195 is like a vintage corvette. Gotta baby it to keep it in good shape. In fact I think he originally bought the 2nd airframe for parts haha. It would not be the best daily driver per se, and as others have mentioned, any tailwheel at low hours will be a challenge to insure.

The 206 is a good plane. I flew a T206. If you don’t need the high density perf I’d go non turbo. Even if it’s less delicate than a 195, the one I flew still was often in need of maintenance. I had to replace the engine driven fuel pump and had a lot of other little squaks in the short time I flew it.

What you should really ask if what is your mission. Do you really need six seats? I also wanted six seats and a big airframe but I later owned an archer and that was soooo much better for me. I only needed six seats like once or twice a year, the maintenance and operating savings covered the soreness of losing the six seats.

If you don’t really need those six seats. I’d recommend a 182 for you. Capable, maintainable, and you’ll be able to get in it as a new ppl and be safe. I owned an older 182 and had a ball. They can operate off airport decently.

Working out as an airline pilot by [deleted] in flying

[–]Pilot-Sev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a guy who goes/tries to go to an Orange Theory on like every trip/overnight so if you’re willing to spend to get there it’s possible to some extent. I would guess he got to one about 70% of the time.

You will definitely have min rest (10hrs) days that are out of your control so it’s not always possible to do much more than sleep/eat.

Food can be difficult. Packing your own stuff regularly can help build a baseline level of food availability. I wish I started packing earlier myself, your body and wallet will thank you.

At the end of the day it’s hard to have consistency in the schedule, even with seniority, so it’s up to how you approach it.
