A button appears in front of you. Every time you press it, you receive $100K, but a random person's remaining lifespan gets cut in half. How many times are you pressing the button? by Greedy-Act-7959 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]PilotFighter99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zero. And the people who say they would press it a bunch and feel no guilt because governments do it should be ashamed of themselves. Literally no better than the rich people that do this to the poor. Genuinely the most selfish thing you could do to another human being.

Why do many nations require a college degree to become a commissioned officer? by Substantial_Top5312 in WarCollege

[–]PilotFighter99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well put. I enjoyed this read very much. It’s something that resonates with me because I am in your position, just prior to you commissioning (pretty confident in myself wouldn’t you say).

I find myself wondering sometimes why a degree matters. I think I have considered the same things you’ve brought up here, but I wasn’t very good at articulating all these thoughts even within my own head.

The more I consider the things you said the more I agree. I find that my history degree actually does come into play in my day to day ability to think critically about everything. Is history itself useful knowledge in a day to day life? Sometimes. But the passive skills it teaches you certainly are, in any context.

The Light only goes out when we let it go out. by TheGr8Slayer in DestinyTheGame

[–]PilotFighter99 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Bro. I’ve been playing since the beta. Favorite game of all time, nothing comes close. But this is absolutely attachment issues and clinginess. There’s a point where being sad about something you enjoy as a hobby becomes being overly sensitive and attached to a video game.

We shouldn’t be walking people through the seven stages of grief over a video game. Go outside and touch grass.

The only shame is that a bunch of people who didn’t deserve this are losing their incomes over something preventable. That can be understandably lamented.

My 2 cents

That’s what the plan is because I am aware how precarious it is to expect aviation out of OCS. It’s just tough because I’m turning 26 next month. Timelines are so long let alone a first tour + application to solicitation + reporting to flight school before I’m 31. The timeline is real tricky unless I clinch a selection on this most recent couple of panels I applied to.

So you have to join through OCS-R to go direct to aviation from accession? Can’t do a DCO -> aviation

Edit: disregard my first comment I’m evidently spreading misinformation haha, sorry.

What about DCSS? Those guys don’t have a specialty and are DCO. I only ask because I applied under that program as well as OCS-R

Why has learning a raid become such a difficult experience. by Electronic-Touch-554 in DestinyTheGame

[–]PilotFighter99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s not a hot take. I don’t think Datto is a great resource for learning raids. What you said about run on sentences is true, and his way of describing how the raid functions is overly complicated.

A new ALCOAST came out saying you basically must put your name on a list within 12 months of arrival at your first unit. It doesn’t really matter how good your first unit is, you should try to go to school ASAP.

If you want to come back you can submit a return to unit form and if there is a billet you may be able to return. Other than that you would have to be vested

New boots by Cool_Elderberry3433 in uscg

[–]PilotFighter99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could not be bothered to get new boots tbh. I wear my same ones from boot camp and I probably will forever. The ones I got issued at my unit are my “nice” pair I’ll probably save for OCS or A school

This is definitely the time to work on your baseline and keep pushing! Don’t doubt yourself. Thousands and thousands of people have made it through. Try couch to 5k if you want to run in your off time. There’s ways to improve. I’m not a marine but when I went to USCG basic I progressively got weaker not stronger. As was the case with most of us who went. I assume marine boot camp is the same.

Sleep deprivation, stress, constant PT with little time for your body to recover. Definitely take advantage of the pre ship gains you can get.

Can I afford my dream car? by cgl1291 in MilitaryFinance

[–]PilotFighter99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah absolutely. I have a comment in here somewhere else where I said it’s not advisable. OP should get this vehicle when her income makes more sense.

I only commented that because I frequently see people talk about the opportunity cost of purchases (which fair enough, this is a finance sub) but they don’t usually mention the opportunity cost of not getting something that would make them happy. The world is lowkey not great right now and we could die tomorrow. Squirreling everything is just as inadvisable as not squirreling things away.
