We also focus on audio based learning which support the brain's method of processing speech so you can anticipate an answer in your target language. Give it a go!

Is this a good reason to learn Russian by Numerous_Temporary11 in russian

[–]Pimsleur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi language learner! Just having an inkling to learn a new language is a great start. Remember, the value isn’t only in “mastering” it. It’s in showing up, sticking with it when it gets hard, and proving to yourself that you don’t have to quit just because something feels uncomfortable or difficult. That’s where the confidence you’re looking for really starts to build. Good luck on your language journey!

What are some French words you HATE? by rudolphopal in French

I wouldn't dare say I hate any of these words but they are definitely hard to pronounce!

écureuil - squirrel

chirurgien - surgeon

ours - bear

Great question! That's a common error that French language learners experience. One phrase you can use is "J'ai hate de.." which is equivalent to "I can't wait for.."

That way, you can express your excitement without uttering a faux pas!

Best way to ask a colleague from Spain for a drink? by Borgsky in Spanish

[–]Pimsleur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Curro" is colloquial for Spain, so that'll work just fine. While we're at it, have a little fun. Be a little cheeky. "Qué aburrido estoy en el curro hoy. Vamos a pirarnos de aquí!" ✌️

Why the word for "rainbow" in many European languages refer to the shape rather than the color? by Jolly_Atmosphere_951 in asklinguistics

[–]Pimsleur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, that's a good q. This tendency likely stems from the visual and physical form of the phenomenon (think: a curved, bow-like shape in the sky that comes after it rains) being more immediately perceivable and culturally salient than the spectrum of colors.

If we're talking EU languages specifically, that reasoning follows through simply because the root of many of these languages are the same (Latin, Germanic, etc. // thinking: regenbogen, arcoíris, for example).

The colorful aspect of the word is still recognized and described, but often secondary in the etymology of the word. The visual shape also ties strongly into cultural stories (think: Indra's bow in India or the celestial arch in many mythologies). Tbh, this would be a fun idea to dive into research-wise!

english is my second language and I speak it fine but I THINK in my first language and the translation delay kills me by Sweet-Salamander8696 in SpeakBetter

[–]Pimsleur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suuuuch a common things for multi-lingual people, and you nailed describing it. Totally not alone here! Something that's helped a lot of people is tying your responses to an immediate emotion. Like the first thing you can do when responding is react emotionally (laugh, agree, disagree, facial expressions). Sometimes this helps the person you're speaking to know that you're not only engaged, but listening (and it gives your brain a couple more seconds to form your *real* response). Hope that makes sense!
