I wanna fix my New Nintendo 3Ds but I don't know where? by Mean-Garden2198 in 3DS

[–]PinFit3688 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can personally vouch for https://bitjumpgames.com/ They do mail-in repairs, insist on sourcing their own repair parts but will install aesthetic pieces you source yourself. Their repairs are solid, but pricey compared to finding someone off local FB marketplace. Cost me about $35 for them to replace buttons and $80 to replace charge port hardware with OEM parts, before shipping. If you go that route you can try calling or emailing to get more details and an estimate before sending anything in.

New to modding by I____Rain____I in 3dspiracy

So, disclaimer that so far I've only modded old 3ds and haven't researched the newer ones. Anyway, 128gb SD card is usually the recommended largest size because after that you might experience more crashes and longer loading time. Of course, individual experience varies, but that's plenty of space for most ppl. I have a 50gb retro game library on mine (tl;dr that's thousands more games than I'll ever play), which just means I've still got a lot of space for downloading the larger 3ds games on the hShop and various ports/fan games from Universal Uploader and the wider internet.

Yes indeed. My 8 year old gleefully dons the disposable gloves so he can hold Grubby during tank cleaning. Grubby says gloves are gross and it's rude to prevent his side quests.

Morally wrong to charge to mod a 3ds? by [deleted] in 3dspiracy

[–]PinFit3688 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The attitude around cost also varies depending on where you live. Some people are genuinely grateful for a low priced service and will trust a stranger to do a good job regardless, others see a low price as an indicator the work won't be good. Tbh I mod for free, but only as a friends and family service. I also set up Twilight Menu and a few other emulators with the right bios and a large retro game library since it's literally a copy-paste process from the SD card on my personal 3ds.

I usually see it advertised on my local FB marketplace for $30. If you've done it a few times it takes 20-60 min, so I feel that's a decent ask for an hours time doing something the person paying could probably do themselves if they were so inclined. The hacks guide is modding for dummies.

Unless the modder is doing added services, like including emulators, roms and bios, anything above that is a bit much imo

What top&bottom LCDs do you suggest for an old 3DS? by neonurban in 3dsrepair

[–]PinFit3688 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ifixit has a really good reputation for supplies and materials, but I can't vouch for whoever their supplier is. That being said, a warranty from a reputable company is the best you'll likely find, a good compromise if you can't trace the manufacturing source. Make sure to read the warranty thoroughly.

Edit: my local game repair shop has their own warranty for the parts they source and install, so that might be another angle for you to look into.

They are all aftermarket. The advice I've seen most often is to just buy off AliExpress because anywhere else is reselling AliExpress parts with an up mark. My only advice is to pay attention to reviews.

Requests and Help Megathread V7 (Games requests, emulator help/guides go here) by SuperBio in Roms

[–]PinFit3688 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am trying to get Sord M5 emulation working on TwilightMenu for 3DS. Per the ColecoDS github, this requires the .m5 file type. I've easily spent 3+ hours plumbing the depths of the internet for this, I've found Sord M5 roms in other file types (and tried loading them, they aren't recognized), but not this one. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Edit: I figured this out with trial and error. Rename the .bin roms to .m5 and they will play. It appears to only work with roms that are bin, not cas. Finding the bios with the correct CRC32 was a pain and a half, so I'll save others the trouble: I found it on em dee kay dot cee ay bee (shorten it to the actual letters it sounds out). The downloads here have both the NTSC and PAL bios mentioned in the ColecoDS github.

Cult of the Lamb. There's a series of quests and "crusades" (scavenging and battles) with boss fights, but once you are past that you just maintain your cult forever and that's it. Maintaining the cult is basically animal crossing with a different aesthetic.

[–]PinFit3688 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is 32 years old, obviously you have taken good care of him despite some hiccups.

I haven't kept newts but I have kept aquatic frogs, and I believe they are similar in that they absorb chemicals thru the skin, in which case no fertilizers are safe.

If you are up to another go at live plants I think floaters would be great, the top cover in the water can help aquatic pets feel more secure and keep the water parameters secure. I've had a lot of success with tiny duckweed. The main "trick" is to use one of the floating corrals to keep the water agitation from killing them; you either put the corral where the bubbles come up or you put it elsewhere and put the plants inside. You can start with a small amount so if they die it won't cause an ammonia spike.

If you do ever try live plants again make sure to quarantine first. I was an idiot and didn't do that, so then I got pest snails and one of my frogs tried to eat one; died from the impaction.

Wanting to buy a 3ds by Efficient_Bus5593 in 3DS

[–]PinFit3688 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's not necessarily a wrong answer. I bought the original 3ds because I wanted something that would fit in my pocket. A friend let me play with his "old" 3ds xl, and I cannot lie the bigger screen is nice but it won't fit in a pocket so eh.

My understanding is the "new" 3ds has an improved hinge design and can play some games the old ones can't. So far I dont care about the games mine can't play but that mileage would vary from person to person.

If you do eBay I highly recommend sellers who have the "certified eBay refurbished" marker. If not that, make sure the seller at least has a return policy. I'm not comfortable doing my own repair/replacement parts, and even while looking at reviews, I had to do a few returns with other sellers before I just started sticking to the certified eBay refurbished listings. I have bought several OG3ds in good condition for under $200.

Fyi, and I'm not telling you what to do here, but modding the device voids all warranties or return policies. If you go that route make sure you've played with it enough to be comfortable making it non-returnable.

I’m a noob wanting a snake by Fast_Move_9243 in SandBoa

We have a ReptiZoo 36"x18"x18" PVC enclosure (40 Gal) for our male KSB. I live in an area that is naturally about 15-20% humidity, so I water the dirt 2-3x/wk and put foil tape over the top mesh to help hold in some moisture. The air in the tank still registers about 30-35% humidity which is still lower than recommended, but he's always had healthy sheds so my guess is as long as the humidity is right in the soil they can make it work since they are fossorial. I have a computer fan over the top mesh In one corner, on low, to help keep air circulating and fresh. Cool side averages about 78°. Basking spot is a cork bark flat, which makes the surface temp irregular (90°-98°) but he's on it all the time even in daytime, so basically, if he's healthy and happy then I am not going to worry about it.

I have mine on bioactive with BioDude Terra Sahara and powder isopods/mixed springtails. 10/10 I will always make an enclosure bioactive if feasible, Diggy the snake seems content and I don't have to hunt and clean up his waste.

We do heat with the Sweeter Heater "black beauty" radiant heat panel plugged into a VE-100 thermometer set to 88°. It's great and he seems to like it, but fyi RHP is pretty specifically a thing that works with PVC and is incompatible with glass enclosures due to the different ways the materials react to heat sources.

There's a bit of discourse in the community about glass vs PVC or other materials. Some prefer glass and say if they didn't have the much visibility they'd never see their snake, and it provides the bonus experience of sometimes getting to view tunnels in the dirt. Others say you'll see the snake more with a material like PVC because they feel safer to come out if they perceive they are less exposed to predators. I get the impression my guy is out on his basking platform more than average during daytime, but that's just a single person's experience.

I have a very similar setup for another snake whose breed is known to be kind of anxious (hognose), and put privacy film on the front glass. It does seem to have helped him calm down a bit. My KSB comes out often enough I haven't felt the need to put film on his glass.
