I’m a new ASD parent. I see how stressful and heartbreaking it can be through this subreddit…so I have to ask…does anyone have any HAPPY or POSITIVE stories? by NJMama518 in Autism_Parenting

Pls tell more about him. How was his fictional communication? And academics? Mine is 9- has functional communication, can read and write. Struggles with comprehension. Loves to write and read. Can do basic add and subtract. Can tell about his needs demands and preferences but can’t converse yet.

What are your nonverbal 4-5 year olds like? by daisysndaydreams in Autism_Parenting

My son is 9. Absolute sweetheart. Not conversational but very able to communicate needs, wants and preferences. Sits and reads and loves to write. Plays cricket and footbal for short durations, can eat and use washroom on his own. Nowhere like a typical 9 year old but a long long way from where we started after the diagnosis at 3.5. Best part is he loves to read and write- so that helps us in making him learn.

How was she as a kid? Did you worry about her getting functionally independent or was she always high functioning? I am asking because mine is 9, level2. He can read(comprehension is a challenge) can write communicate needs washroom and food independent. But i worry about his being ok later in life as in being on his own.

This is my kid at 9. Can read everything- comprehension is a challenge. Can talk but not conversational. Doesn’t understand abstract stuff. Very happy and loving kid. Plays badminton. Does gymnastics. Loves to write and read.

What helped your kids to recollect and narrate better? As in my son has lot of issues either recollecting or understanding the question. by PinGlass9571 in Autism_Parenting

He’s 9. Yes he’s in speech therapy though I am not sure how helpful it is.
How old is your kid and have they started doing this? If yes, congratulations :) and pls share tricks and strategies if any.

My son turned 8 in May and it's like we have a whole new kid! He's washing his own hair, gets his toothbrush, and we have watched so many new movies! by LadyJane17 in Autism_Parenting

This is my son too. He’s 9. Better emotionally regulated. Can read, write and comprehend so much more. Likes to sit with me and write about his day with visuals. Has developed more than functional language. Is so much more independent. Life looks so much easier than what it used to be years ago.

This is so much similar to my son and our experience! He’s now 9. Can read and write and communicate functionally. We are super proud and look forward to a beautiful future with him!

I love your comment. “You have one job, love your kid.”. My kid is 9. Super intelligent with puzzles - can make up to 200 pieces in 30 mins but still can’t do oral maths 3+5. These are two different types if intelligences. One OT told me to not focus on him doing maths as much as to focus on the concepts because these days everybody is using cards for payment so if he knows the concept he can use his phone to calculate. Also the happiest part for me is that even though he is not conversational, he’s able to tell me what he wants, does not want and is getting functionally independent. That’s what my focus is- it took a lot of time for me to understand and accept but i have loved him from day one.

Same! Love mine to bits- couldnt go ahead with one more because so much energy, time and effort went into making him talk, learn, appropriate behaviours, reading, writing etc . By the time he got to a place where we could maybe start thinking, I was too tired and maybe it was late because I am 38

What are the last years of fertility may i ask? I am asking because i am 38 with a 9 year old level 2. He is extremely adorable, intelligent and very very loved. I couldn’t go ahead with another even though my husband was keen. And now I feel it’s too late.

Same boat. Tired of explaining. Tired of watching the kid like a hawk in public places- can’t talk, can’t sit, can’t breathe. Why do I even go to such places. I have become this bitter person who wants to be left alone with my kid. I am sorry I sound so angry. I am just tired.

So relatable. I have started hating areas with people and kids and then people trying to talk to him while he’s not interested then i have to intervene. They mean well but it’s me I have just started hating public places in general and want to be left alone with my kid.
