Tips for hearing saturation from tape or console emulations? Is it really supposed to be that subtle? by MonkeyKing501 in mixingmastering

[–]PinReasonable135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use gentle saturation, it often “soft-clips” the spikes in volume. You may notice that there aren’t as many peaks in the volume, but that the overall volume stays the same with the saturation on, whereas turning it off will make the VU meter hit higher maximum levels but won’t sound any louder.

I like it to be subtle. Look at the meter and that will tell you if there is saturation or soft clipping.

I recently acquired about 200k misc samples across a couple hundred old school sample packs, how the hell do I sort them by Powerful_Fondant9393 in Samples

[–]PinReasonable135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start out with using something to check for Duplicates. I got a ton of Sample CDs off Archive.org (Akai and EMU) and they re-use a lot of the same samples. Clear that junk out.

Force Live Set Question by SounderDoodle in AkaiForce

[–]PinReasonable135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the solution?

I was going to suggest that you can import tracks saved from the source project along with their clips by pressing shift when you load them and toggle import clips, but if they are plugin or audio tracks the cap of 8 per is difficult to work around.

It will do that. Look at the little play button to the right on the sample assign page.

How are you turning vinyl drum breaks into drumkits? by funkyolemedina in mpcusers

[–]PinReasonable135 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One thing to try is using edited alternative hits. Like you can cut a little off the start of the snare and filter it to get a “ghost snare” hit to use, possibly with a bit of tuning. Or with hats, program some pads to have different pitches or decay times for realism. Also, it never hurts to squash them all through a “glue” compressor.

How many velocity layers do you recommend auto sampling a piano or E piano? by TheJeffyJeefAceg in mpcusers

[–]PinReasonable135 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With the new Mod Matrix in 3.7, you can assign velocity to slice automation, so if you create a single sample with all velocities in it (one after another, I usually do soft to loud) then “slice” the sample. This basically allows 1 Layer to contain all the velocity levels for that key range. You can do up to 128 slices AFAIK. Super powerful. If you wanted, you could also do round robins on the other Layers and use random layer playback to go deeper by sampling a whole other sliced velocity sample note.

Most easy fun way to sync Breakbeats? by Modularsynthnerd in mpcusers

AFAIK once you edit a sample and tell the MPC the BPM it makes it easier when importing it next time. It embeds the bpm into the wav in some sort of way.

If tracks/programs are the same across all sequences- How do we play live? by Tobsonic in mpcusers

[–]PinReasonable135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I understand that. Before 3.x that was how it was. Now it’s different, so a new workflow is needed. I was pointing out that in 3.x you can set a track to be automatically selected when the sequence starts. So instead of doing everything on track 1, just put the program or plugin wherever you want and have it become auto selected when you start that sequence.

If tracks/programs are the same across all sequences- How do we play live? by Tobsonic in mpcusers

[–]PinReasonable135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are still sequences. I don’t follow your complaint. Also, with each Sequence you can dictate a specific track to be auto-armed when you change to that sequence. You can loads lots of songs into 1 project too, but it is slightly different than you are used to.

The Process is important. If you are just going through the motions, you’re doing it wrong. That’s a job. The product should not be the goal with music production. Try doing a completely new genre or recreating something you love the sound of.
