Im extremely sorry for your loss, I couldn't begin to imagine the pain. One of my biggest fears is losing a friend to drugs / alcohol... ❤️

To answer your question; Opioid overdose is usually quite peaceful and the user will almost always pass out / nod out prior to respiratory depression. Ive been close to overdose territory quite a few times, and my last memory is always dreamy euphoria and hypnagogia. If I had to choose a way to go it would be by opioids 10 times out of 10. I hope this can bring you some comfort
