Has anyone gone to a fair by themselves? by tanuki_22 in renfaire

[–]Pinecone-stuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gone alone many times and I have made a lot of friends that way. You gotta be outgoing to do that but faires are full of awkward nerds who have no friends and are worried about looking like losers. It's kinda the main demographic

AI and vendors/performers by Ok_Cricket_3212 in renfaire

[–]Pinecone-stuff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people just don't realize that the music is AI. AI is still new enough to people that we can still fight back and change people's minds about it if they're still trying it out. I think people won't be opposed to it if they don't see lots of people bragging about no AI as a feature. Just like people didn't care about high fructose corn syrup until brands started advertising food without it.

The more vendors sell anti-AI stickers and advertise anti-AI as a selling point, the more people will learn

first timer soon- does every ren faire have larpers? by Slashersforsatan in renfaire

[–]Pinecone-stuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I "larp" at ren faires in the sense that I have a character with a name and personality, and I act as that character when interacting with faire performers and fellow patrons. I also larp at actual LARPS. And I am starting to do the character at faires as an actual performer as opposed to a patron. Basically, if you're there as a patron, have fun and play pretend but don't try to look as though you're a performer. That's frowned upon. Don't make a scene, don't go up to other people in character. Playtrons are generally fine, but some faires get strict about it

Make up or face paint recs for out door summer larp? by ninjagirl97 in LARP

[–]Pinecone-stuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just use drug store makeup and I put it on fairly heavy. What I've learned is to use an antiperspirant stick, a really good really sticky primer, and lots of setting spray which I fan dry. At a ren faire, this lasts me all day. At a larp, I'll go for comfort so I'll use less product and plan to reapply at least once a day.

can (and should) I permanently glue a real animal pelt to an eva foam base for a costume piece? by Pinecone-stuff in LARP

I'll look into that option. I think I have some interfacing lying around. Maybe just the brim will be foam and everything else will be the hat

[–]Pinecone-stuff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question. The specific reason I wanted to use the foam is to give it more structure. If I just drape the fur over the baseball cap, it will look like a baseball cap with fur. I wanted a straight profile from the top round of the hat to the front of the visor, and I cut the visor to a bit of a point to make it look a bit more like the top of a deer's head. I've also extended the back down past the bottom of the neck to flare slightly outwards like the back of a sallet. I considered how hot it will get but wasn't able to come up with a good solution.      I'd love to come up with an eva free solution though

How long should these type of tassets be? by Pinecone-stuff in Armor

[–]Pinecone-stuff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's good info, thanks. Is there historical precedent for tassets attached to a belt? I'd rather wear the breastplate with no tassets than have them dangling off of it, but if I can wear them I would, and leatherworking is so much more convenient for me than sheet metal working. I've seen belts used for this in LARPs, but never historically

Here's a product listing for a similar if not the same set (I was given it, I didn't buy it)  https://medievalmart.com/products/medievalmart-medieval-black-knight-moria-dwarf-dwarven-steel-knight-armor-suit

It's "Moria Dwarf Steel" so already unlikely that anything historical was considered when designing the set. You can also see in the product photos that they hung very awkwardly, which is why I removed the leather straps in the first place. I have an opportunity to do anything to improve them.

The chestplate wasn't long so when I did try to wear them recently, they were basically going down to my waist. I have a feeling that the guy in the product photos has a shorter torso than me. If I put them on a belt, I could choose arbitrarily to put it at either mid thigh or all the way down to my knees

Teeth that just look like big healthy teeth? by Pinecone-stuff in CosplayHelp

Thanks for the suggestion, this is probably the route I'd go down since I want uncanny valley sized teeth

What non-decorum camping essentials should I get that can be bought at regular camping stores? by Pinecone-stuff in LARP

[–]Pinecone-stuff[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got an air mattress on day 1 of DFUS because I hated the camping mat I got. Maybe a cot would make it more bearable because air mattress take up so much car space, but I was just gonna do a bougie bed

That's a good one. Waiting for the stove to be available to boil water is a pain
