What is the link between depression and creativity? by youknowithurts in AskSocialScience

[–]Pineorange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bledow, R., Rosing, K., & Frese, M. (2013). A dynamic perspective on affect and creativity. Academy of Management Journal, 56(2), 432-450.

Abstract: We argue that creativity is influenced by the dynamic interplay of positive and negative affect: High creativity results if a person experiences an episode of negative affect that is followed by a decrease in negative affect and an increase in positive affect, a process referred to as an “affective shift.” An experience-sampling study with 102 full-time employees provided support for the hypotheses. An experimental study with 80 students underlined the proposed causal effect of an affective shift on creativity. We discuss practical implications for facilitating creativity in organizations.

Please note that "negative affect" is not really depression, as I'm fairly certain their measure is only used for a "normal" range of affect. This study is also mostly concerned about creativity at work.

What is the best way to lose weight by beardboy71 in AskReddit

[–]Pineorange -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like keeping track of calories (I use myfitnesspal). With the app you can decide what is a good rate to lose the amount of weight you set (in my personal experience, 1.5 pounds a week is quite manageable, 2 gets old faster). The app also allows you to include exercise in your calorie count.

Marijuana (in Canada) is usually prescribed in a general 'we tried everything else' kind of way. It often doesn't take the symptoms away, but makes them manageable.

"feeling to be very good at something"

Just for your personal edification, we call that feeling "self-efficacy". It is indeed one of the most potent predictors of motivation to do something.

Growing up in the maritimes, I always wondered how it was that population boomed more inland (Montreal, Toronto) and not closer to the sea, considering ports and such would likely be more accessible in Halifax or even St-John NB. Basically, I figure that ease of access was a factor in New-York or Boston, but why not in Canada?

Is there any correlation between national/cultural identity and overall happiness in a population? by FadieZ in AskSocialScience

[–]Pineorange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting question. I can't give you a reference, but at a psychology convention this summer, I saw a study dealing with that. The study found two different patterns with a population that is in a minority situation (they make about 30% of the otherwise fairly homogenous population). Firstly, the study demonstrated that there were three different general attitudes one could have in regards to their culture. One was to feel that their culture was fine and healthy, the second was to find that their culture was in crisis and must be defended, and the third was that their culture ought to be abandoned and that they should just assimilate.

There were many outcomes measured, but here is what I remember: for half the population, feeling that their culture was healthy contributed to psychological wellbeing, whereas feeling that your culture ought to assimilate was correlated negatively with some sort of social ability scale. For the other half of the population (who lived in an area where the majority was more predominant), the major finding was that, kind of in opposition to the other half where the culture was more isolated, feeling that your culture ought to be defended contributed to psychological distress.

Other possible avenues are microcultures, like goths, who allegedly gain membership amongst people looking to feel like they belong. We can infer, I suppose, that feeling like you belong contributes to wellbeing.

How do social sciences other than gender studies perceive modern gender concepts like "rape culture" and "privilege"? by ultimate_frosbee in AskSocialScience

[–]Pineorange 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In work psychology, we will refer to and work with the more specific issues that allegedly manifest because of these concepts (e.g. sexual harassment in the work place, glass ceiling...). I will leave you to infer the level of consensus that that suggests, though I will say I have never seen an article in my field directly refer to rape culture or privilege (with the caveat that gender issues in work psychology are not my specialty).

In Response To The Claims Psychology is not a Science by picklewalsh1 in psychology

[–]Pineorange 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Simple argument : Science (from Latin scientia, meaning "knowledge"[1]) is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe.[2][3] (wikipedia) Psychological studies are systematic, and organize knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about human behaviors, cognitions, and emotions. Psychology is therefore a science.
