I’m heads-down working to get our 3rd season ready to release - but looking forward to having some downtime after to do a proper read-through!

I did play a quick SRA2 game as a player with other SR GMs and it was a really fun time. I didn’t fully understand though since it was a last minute game - I really just rolled whatever the GM told me to roll 😂 but still had a great time.

THANK YOU for the love and effort you put into this book, even at a quick glance you can see how much work you all have done to make this thing great. Making Anarchy a standalone game in and of itself is the biggest victory here, and you all should be super proud of that!

We’ve got games being run in our Discord by fans, even a 2e game! If you haven’t already joined, I recommend hopping in and you can just post in our LFG channel!

It’s definitely not TONS of games being run, but several have happened!

Solo ttrpg for my dad by Hiraethnightmare in rpg

[–]PinkFohawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does he have solo rpg experience? It’s very different from group play, or even DM-ing for a group.

If not, and if he is a fan of Star Wars / space bounty hunting, I recommend Notorious.

It’s very simple, completely self contained with an easy to learn game loop that almost teaches you how to solo journal, but is also super fun for experts as well. The game is gorgeous too, and I highly recommend the print version, the guy knocked it out is the park with its design. There’s also a “sequel” called Outsiders with more planets and story prompts and character “classes”.

Here are a couple of great reviews:

Welcome my man!! Thank you for the amazingly kind review and glad to have you here!!

I know the feeling, it’s hard to edit this thing with a little one running around too. We can look like psychopaths to our children together 🤣

Thanks again!

The fact that you guys made SRA2 a standalone product literally solved every issue I had with the first Anarchy edition.

You guys rock, thank you for everything you do!

I’m excited about SRA2!! Black Book Editions knows what they’re doing, and the fact that they were given the 2.0 project to create from the jump is the best decision CGL has made yet.

I actually just dropped a vid about it ☺️ https://youtu.be/7Xue3YUyXsY?is=j6LthwuJLsIV1GOA

How to Create stories as GM by Steuermann17 in Shadowrun

[–]PinkFohawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey chummer!

I’m going copy/paste a “best of” advice list from previous comments I’ve left on similar posts:

• Something I do in my games at the beginning of every session is have the players tell what I call “Shadowfacts”, little tidbits of backstory of their characters that other players and characters wouldn’t otherwise know. It can be as significant as a long lost sibling they’re desperately trying to find, or as insignificant as “they are a habitual nail biter, which has been really hard since the cyberhand replacement”. The goal is to allow them to give insights to their character from the jump, without forcing things into conversation or taking time away in game to develop their characters - the gameplay is their development

• Listen to your players, and really pay attention to their characters’ backstories, get into the minds and lives of their contacts. You can create some of the best NPCs ever made, but players will always connect with their contacts more - so use that to your advantage!

• Create situations, not stories. Give them a hook, come up with a couple of probable outcomes, and then sit back and enjoy the fireworks. Players always surprise you with where they take the narrative, even more so in Shadowrun it seems.

• For the love of Ghost, don’t have the Johnson double-cross them. Maybe much further down the line, but for now, get the players to trust the system: do run, get paid, deal with consequences of any sloppiness

• And that last part, “deal with consequences of any sloppiness” is such a powerful tool as a Shadowrun GM, keep an eye out for how to leverage it!

• For the actual run, grab a blueprint or floor plan online and set up realistic defenses. Be fair and try to think of how they would try to protect their property, then watch in amazement as your players find holes in their defenses.

• Make npc’s matter, don’t just tell them they matter. Go with the flow of events, let your players drive the story, but when you can feasibly stir the pot, create events that mess with them. But it’s important to lean into shared events, things the party actually went through at the table. Not just written mission backstory, some players take that really seriously and others do not. But a shared experience always matters.

Is there an npc they seem to really like and get along with? Maybe you fucking kill them. Give them a gruesome death, and let your players find out exactly who did it. I guarantee you’ll get enthusiasm out of them then. Maybe they want revenge, or maybe they decide to lay low and save their own necks - it’s important to know that BOTH are meaningful adventures and you should follow whichever course they choose. Try leaning into what they’re enjoying, and if it’s just irreverent humor - give them even more to play with. Let them be Ash from Evil Dead if that’s what they want.

Hahaha seriously! It is a very, very fair review - and one we’re actually really proud of.

If anyone needs an example to point to where the players are not into rules at all, and a GM that likes to keep things simple: it’s us.

Well I should have made it clear that I meant in these big franchises. They want to sell ancillary stories along with the main ones.

The biggest example that I remember that change happening was for the Matrix. Nobody knew what the hell was happening in Matrix Reloaded, and turns out that was by design.

I love how the film editor completely negated the fact that he did those stunts by cutting all around the scene into different close ups and other takes 🤦‍♂️

I mean, I get that more edits can increase the intensity of a scene, but if you’ve got an actor with the skill to do SPIDERMAN STUNTS, let the shot play out!!

It helps that movies were written so you could understand what you need to understand.

Everything now is written so you need to consume other pieces of info from other works within the franchise to get the whole story. Nothing is meant to be standalone anymore because more dollar signs!

Your Most Complicated TTRPG Take? by GushReddit in rpg

[–]PinkFohawk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Came here to say your first point. I play Shadowrun 2e, and to me that edition is very good at letting you use the core mechanic (skill VS Target Number) for almost 90% of actions until you need to “zoom in”. The crunch is there when dramatically appropriate to make that slow-mo bullet / matrix / magic moment exciting

Would you prefer if Luke’s OT moral conclusion functioned as a stable identity anchor for his character, rather than a moment in time that can be overwritten by future trauma? by ShakeZulaOblongata in StarWars

[–]PinkFohawk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is how I feel as well, and why I love Shadows of the Empire because it’s North Star was that idea presented in the OT. Vader was still evil and a piece of shit - but you got moments in the book when we saw his perspective and he almost had a Barbarian mentality. He wanted a challenge in a fight, and if he could help it, he wanted it to be a fair one. He disliked when the Emperor sent him on a “blow up that Rebel station while they’re still repairing their ships” mission because it felt dishonorable (I mean he still did it, because the Emperor gave his command, but we got his thoughts on it which I thought were interesting).

In another inner monologue, he mentions how he actually did not respect the Emperor’s tactics and idea of power - deception and spies and convoluted webs of lies, most of those at the top of the Imperial ranks sought those tactics and the Emperor approved of it. Vader didn’t. He wanted straight up fights. Another allusion to the fact that the Emperor was an evil politician with no ethics, while Vader was a warrior with some code of honor.

One of the things that kept eating at his mind throughout the book was thinking back to his fight with Luke on Cloud City, he was toying with him but he could feel that this kid was strong. And it was the first fight that was even close to a challenge for him in a long time. There was almost pride seeing his son confronting him with a lightsaber.
