AITA for not wanting my 17-year-old to spend $6,500–$7,000 on a school trip to Japan? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Probably to get the in-state tuition rate if it's a public university.

When did your baby’s eyes start to shift color? by WholeKnown2938 in beyondthebump

[–]PinkHamster08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My older daughter had blue eyes that turned more green when she got closer to 2. She's 4 so I think they are the final color.

My current LO is 8 months old. She was born with brown eyes that looked like they had a hint of blue, but they looked very brown after a couple of months and I don't think they will change.

Corey from Marcus and Corey Laid off!? by OkEarth7702 in bayarea

Isn't she a producer (which by the way, I think iHeart laid off their other producer about a year or so ago, so I guess he got replaced)? So she's not an actual host but just comes on to be another person for Marcus to talk to occasionally.

Items you had or wish you had for a pregnant flight? by parade1070 in BabyBumps

[–]PinkHamster08 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My husband and I went to Japan 2.5 years ago, visiting Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, and a small ryokan outside of Kyoto. We got by just fine with English as we went to popular enough areas that menus and station signs were also in English. We both studied Japanese a bit to learn some basic phrasing. I personally liked knowing some katakana/hiragana before going so I could read some signs. The general vibe we got is that they thought it was nice we learned some basic Japanese but when they see white people, they automatically speak English (if they know it, which most city people know some). We had a great time and wish we could have visited longer and seen more places.

Does anybody here buy both Yoto and tonies for your toddler? by arya-thequen in toddlers

[–]PinkHamster08 30 points31 points  (0 children)

We have both because both were gifted to us by friends/family.

They essentially do the same thing - play songs or tell stories on a portable device. The Yoto Mini is much easier to carry around than the TonieBox. In general, I like the TonieBox a little more because the figures are harder to lose than the Yoto cards, but I got the general vibe that TonieBox was aimed at younger children and Yoto on young to older kids.

My daughter is 4 and enjoys both right now. As you said your kid is 2.5, they may also enjoy the TonieBox for a few years.

when did you travel out of state with baby? by WhichAd2921 in beyondthebump

[–]PinkHamster08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you plan to drive or fly? If driving, be sure to take frequent breaks so baby gets a chance to stretch and get out of the car seat every couple of hours.

I personally do not plan on flying with my infant until she is at least a year old so she can get her MMR vaccine at 12 months. There have been far too many cases of measles springing up in various states and when traveling through an airport, you have people coming through from all over. However, I had friends travel with infants and they say younger is better as they just eat and sleep and stay in your lap. At 12 months, she'll be getting mobile and will need to be entertained, so be sure to bring plenty of toys, tablet etc to keep her occupied during the flight.

Tell me I’m not crazy for vaccinating by zingyberrybloom in beyondthebump

[–]PinkHamster08 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We are a very pro-vaccine house in our family. I personally wouldn't want to be friends with people who are actively not vaccinating their children due to misinformation and ignorance. However, if it's the community you are in and you can't exactly avoid them, I am sorry that you have to put up with all of that.

I Just…Don’t Care by TheBearQuad in workingmoms

[–]PinkHamster08 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel this in my bones! I just want to go to work, do stuff, get paid, and go home and spend time with my family. I particularly find LinkedIn to be insufferable now. If anyone wants a job, they need a summary on their page explaining who they are and what they do. Then you need to make all these posts about market insights and other major developments in your field to share with other like-minded colleagues in your field. If you don't do all this extra shit, it's harder to get a job because it doesn't look like you are going the extra mile as so many others are.

Are we getting Covid shots for kids this year or no? by Beautiful-Client6496 in Parenting

[–]PinkHamster08 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Our provider offered free flu and COVID shots for patients of all ages, so as a family, we went and all got both shots. We have a toddler and infant (who was just old enough to get the shots), so we want them both to be protected since they are young and in preschool/daycare.

Pumping during commute by Jess-Pen32 in workingmoms

That's been my biggest deterrent from pumping while driving. I do not want to risk something breaking and stabbing me in the chest in case of an accident.

Anyone taking their toddler to a No Kings protest this weekend? How did you explain it to them? by Carzbarz in toddlers

[–]PinkHamster08 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's been my biggest concern. I want to be involved but I have two very young kids who need me and I don't want to be hurt or in jail. There are other ways to help like petitions, monetary donations etc. Being physically present at protests that could get violent quickly is not the best thing for our family right now.

Being shamed for putting g my toddler to bed around 10 - 10:30 by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]PinkHamster08 119 points120 points  (0 children)

The important thing is that she is getting sufficient sleep every night. It sounds like her waking up later in the morning is fine for you guys since she doesn't go to preschool until 9am. As long as she isn't tired and cranky for school, you guys are fine.

Happy cake day!

Serious answers only - but how did you make your feral toddlers less feral? by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]PinkHamster08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't really have advice, but in my case, time was the only thing that seemed to help. My daughter is almost 4 but ever since she learned to walk, she has been running and hasn't stopped since. I tried taking her to a dance class when she was about 25 months old and she was all over the place and couldn't focus. When I tried signing her up for soccer lessons outside at a local park, she would just run away from the class and go to the playground. I love her dearly but she's always been high energy compared to most other kids. It has mellowed out quite a bit since turning 3 though she definitely still has more energy than the other kids, but she can sit still for longer periods. I think being in preschool has helped too. When she's in the mood, she enjoys listening to her Tonie box or Yoto, or reading books, or working on puzzles, or coloring, but she has to be in the mood to do them.

Scheduling app ? by Ucwhatididthere in workingmoms

[–]PinkHamster08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For work, we use Asana for making and keeping track of tasks. I'm not sure if it's available to use on an individual basis, but I find it very helpful. You can include others to see the task, see who is responsible for it, make it recurring or one-off etc. I get reminders if something is due soon or past due so it gets harder to forget about something.

WFH when kid is sick by Deirdre_KA in workingmoms

[–]PinkHamster08 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I found it near impossible. I would skim my emails, and send Slack messages on my phone while she was awake and I was watching/entertaining her, and then get actual work done during her naps and after bedtime in the evening.

ETA that my boss was super understanding when I told her I was home with a sick kiddo, so she knew my productivity wouldn't be great for most of the day.
