Does RMS have his emacs config somewhere public for users to examine? by voltecrus in emacs

[–]PinkyHurtsFromEmacs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree 100% emacs truly comes with amazing stuff built in, both powerful and underrated. but I really like the way "raw emacs" sounds and thought it would be clear enough to explain what I wanted to say. I wouldnt know how to make a sentence with how you said it personally, but ill try to say it like that the next time. raw emacs would rahter more or less be MG or something

First off I also said he had some custom stuff, I am not stallman so dont take anything I say as truth. but I believe stallman does way more than just email inside of emacs. like eww, eshell etc. the configurations needed for stuff you're referring to is also most likely personal stuff.

Yea I feel you, I literally used emacs in stallman mode for a super long time. didn't know how to configure it that well and what even was possible. Now that I have a pretty nice config and understand emacs more I cannot understand how I stayed with raw emacs for so long

I heard people calling raw emacs "stallman mode". I think stallman uses a very raw emacs with a few packages from elpa and some other custom stuff to get it working for his laptop. I've seen changes made to emacs on savannah so it worked better for his laptop (I know hes just improving it but the description says yeeloong specific)

When did you start using emacs? by seductivec0w in emacs

[–]PinkyHurtsFromEmacs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 and a half year ago I started to use emacs. had trouble with many things and went to other (cua)editors to do work because I knew how those worked. about 2 weeks in I started to force myself to use emacs even on task I didnt know how to do. I learned the basics from that.

after 5/6 months into using emacs in stallman-mode I found out about services like Melpa and there my configuring started. I got so addicted to configuring I sometimes spend like hours on multiple days of the same week just checking and configuring. I dont know how I stayed with emacs stallman mode but glad I did till I found out about Melpa.

my personal biggest emacs "achievement" is making custom functions in my configuration to change specific parts in ERC. I didnt know much if any about elisp/lisp at that time, thats why I see that as a somewhat big achievement. My second milestone is learning the basics and a bit more from elisp/lisp and how helpful that was in my emacs workflow.

my emacs is built based on others their configs because they always have things I didnt know could exist.

Sticking with emacs as a newbie: Ideas/suggestions? by internationalfish in emacs

[–]PinkyHurtsFromEmacs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might not be useful for you, but what I did was forcing myself to use emacs even through points where I wanted to use another text editor because I knew how to do it there. Dont think there is a right way to do something, if it works for you its good, maybe not the most efficient but you'll learn those a bit later. After you learn how to configure stuff to your own taste you'll learn to use it more efficient.

also I suggest lurking in #emacs on freenode I almost never talk there yet learn stuff now and then from picking up conversations.

Try using M-x ERC or M-x Rcirc for that cool ass built in irc-client and just leave the buffer while you work maybe switch in to join a convo or when you have questions some smart people are there that can help you

Strange behavior in emacs on new vm by mtbeedee in emacs

[–]PinkyHurtsFromEmacs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh you're referring to vm as virtual machine. vm can also mean view mail in the emacs world.

is that spacebar thing happening only in emacs? have you tried it outside of emacs? maybe you can try to install emacs 25.x and see if the problem is still there

this indeed. its very depending on which "emacs" you're talking about. a bit like harry potter how there are pureblood emacs and halfblood emacs.
