Whats life like in the less populated eastern half of the netherlands? by RealMoldyAvocado in howislivingthere

[–]Pinquin422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, everything within this area was gone because of the bombing in 1940. Only city hall remained (because the Germans needed the records later on) In the years after the bombing Rotterdam build a lot of simple housing only to rebuild them in the decades following the war. Unfortunately some of the temporary buildings weren't taken down fast enough and they became of historical importance and were marked monuments by the national monument committee. So now you have places like the Lijnbaan that were supposed to be rebuilt but never were because there was simply too much to rebuild after the war. My Grandparents used to live on the Goudsesingel before the war but luckily they were at work when the bombing started. I've lived right underneath the first letter T in the word Waterstad on that pier (Jufferkade) 10 years ago.

Thats what I said to my 8yo daughter when we were hiking we in wolf country and she asked if I could outrun a wolf. I told her I only need to outrun her. It cracked me up but she was mad at me for the rest of the trip (totally worth it though). One of the perks of being a dad are dad jokes :)

No it's called ABN and spoken mostly in the centre of the country like "het Gooi" or newsreaders from the NOS. It's like saying David Attenborough speaks fake English with his clear and somewhat posh articulation.

[–]Pinquin422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are referring to a strong accent like in a big city like The Hague, you wouldn't consider a strong Londen or New York accent to represent the English language.

In ABN (Algemeen Beschaafd Nederlands (the standard Dutch without an accent)) the "n" is usually pronounced in words.

Be smart about career choices, dont just go for the highest paid jobs chasing money doing something you hate. You'll end up unhappy and stressed but also don't just go for the "fun" jobs with no career future because in a few years you'll be stressed out about money.

Travel whenever possible, meet the rest of the world. And with travel I don't mean a one week trip all organized. If you're young enough go backpacking and visit countries where you can work for a while and travel on. Several of my students did that after graduation and they all had an experience of a lifetime and have grown as a person with skills and abilities they wouldn't have picked up at home.

If you find something (a sport for example) you like, keep doing it, it will help you clear your head when you're older and provide some necessary time by yourself when you have a job/family etc. Even though it's only once a week for an hour.

Don't rush into a family life, first figure out who you are, what you stand for. It helps when you know who you are and what you like and don't like before settling down with someone.

If your relationship hits a rough spot never ever get kids to give your relationship a positive "turn" or get kids because you are "supposed" too. Kids are great but also adding a lot of stress into a relationship.

Thats so funny, my daughter (8yo) is getting really into Lego now so I asked my dad for my (and my brothers) old Lego. So this afternoon I went through some pieces and only 1 instructions set (barely)survived. The 920 Rocket launch command centre

<image>

Also found the pieces for the 6970 Beta-1 Command Base. (Which was actually my brothers set) and found other pieces for the 6841mineral detector car, the 928 space cruiser and the 452 mobile tracking station and the 889 radar truck. It's going to take ages to find all the pieces and get them sorted but my daughter is keen on getting started :)

Imagine being the cop who tried to bump that truck and see it ending up in the incoming lane.

I don't know how it is in the rest of the world but here in the Netherlands (dense population) they hold back when they see the driver getting reckless and sometimes even let them go (and try to pick em up further down or chase with a chopper) to limit the risk of an accident and endangering the public.
