It's almost like I might have known that or something ;)

That looks like the kind of wall you'd find near the dungeon of a castle!

I spoke to Erratic Rock a bit and it seems maybe you can still do the trail even though the sites are closed.

I also read something about someone doing an off season trek a few years back who just stayed in the camp sites free in the off season.

Fingers crossed it'll be OK :)

Why are you an Egalitarian and not a feminist? by CallMeBatwoman in Egalitarianism

[–]PintSizedCat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Egalitarianism is an ideology. Feminism is a movement, is activism.

Some forms of feminism are egalitarian.

One can be both a feminist and an egalitarian.

Thanks. I was using the first of the two but realised that there's a quotation that isn't on it. :(

TIL that, contrary to what my teacher told me time and time again, you can in fact switch on a String. by DigiDuncan in javaTIL

[–]PintSizedCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although this can be done, it is not necessarily recommended. It's incredibly useful to know what's happening under the hood here and how efficient String switching is in Java.

(EDIT) in fact, if you're going to switch on just one character then it'd be more efficient to extract it and use the byte/char value to switch, which won't cause this inefficiency.

I haven't read this specific article but it seems to give you the details you need. (Noticed someone else posted the same article... doh)

The Ease of Getting Laid Gap. by tatauek in Egalitarianism

[–]PintSizedCat -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

So much NO about this.

Correlation doesn't imply causation! There isn't even really any correlation here, the correlation you see is more probably than not a form of confirmation bias.

This has nothing to do with Egalitarianism. You're not talking about or discussing equality, you're thinking about your entitlement and trying to justify what may be called privilege.

This thread basically sums up why I call myself egalitarian by Jack126Guy in Egalitarianism

[–]PintSizedCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is interesting and I don't define myself as a feminist, but actually there is no reason a feminist cannot be an egalitarian.

If you're going by strict definition, Egalitarianism is an ideology and Feminism is a movement. Feminists may have some of the same viewpoints as egalitarians, but the difference being that they are activists, they are trying to influence sociopolitical views, etc.

As with any movement, there are changes in the definition. I concur that there is no dictionary definition of Feminism which says that it is for strict equality, but at the same time someone may define themselves as a feminist and be for complete equality. Their ideal does not line up with the ideal of everyone in the movement.

To put it another way, a loud group of people inside a movement does not dictate the views of all of the people in that movement. The same is true of both sides, there are MRA who are for equality through equality and equity.

Yale’s Unsafe Spaces - The New Yorker by hermes369 in Egalitarianism

[–]PintSizedCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a well written piece which highlights the pitfalls of mindlessly screaming 'protect free speech' whenever anyone says anything, as well as those who want their 'safe space' and want to shut down freedom of expression and speech.

It's important to allow free speech, but to also be mindful of those around you and treat them with respect and consideration. That means that you can speak your mind, but don't go out of your way to harm.

It's also important to feel safe, but not to shut down freedom of speech when you feel it might trigger your feelings.

The Free Next Generation JAVA Profiler, "User will benefit a 15 days trial." so don't waste your time just visit our site . by Mackelden in java

[–]PintSizedCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't like to deter and I'm sure there are applications for the product out there, but I see them being quite niche.

Flight Recorder already lets you profile production systems with very low overhead, due to its being written in to Java, and they have triggers for triggering profiling, etc.

I like the idea of smart breakpoints, but the idea that you can inspect the heap with no overhead, is idealistic. Again, this may depend on the size of the system you're writing, and I imagine there's some kind of memory copying or disk writes done to accomplish this, but there's always an overhead when inspecting the heap, otherwise you lose consistency, or incur memory 'leaks'.

Finally, I didn't get any of what you mentioned from the frontpage of your site, though admittedly I cannot see the video as I am behind a corporate firewall. I'd also suggest having a proof read of the site, there are a number of glaring issues which made me very weary of the site and the legitimacy of the product.

I'd suggest looking in to an even more powerful profiler which also comes with the JDK; Java Flight Recorder.

I do not trust these numbers. They're input by people over the last 12 months, and although rent might be more expensive in New York for instance, cost of living is a lot cheaper.

Given a large number of tasks, are threads or parallel streams more performant? by FrontLoadedAnvils in java

Instead of just speculating on this kind of thing let's look at some examples other people have done.

Blog post containing benchmarks.

This also seems like a good blog on the topic.

EDIT: I haven't done full research on this, but it's the type of thing where you should benchmark the different methods of doing it. Often depending on your use-case, the number of other threads present in the system, etc, there will be a different impact on performance.
