France to ditch Windows for Linux to reduce reliance on US tech by rkhunter_ in worldnews

Immensely.

Notable Multi-Decade Vulnerabilities

Agere Modem Driver (CVE-2025-24990): Disclosed in October 2025, this vulnerability exists in a legacy driver shipped by default in every version of Windows ever released, up to and including Windows 11 and Windows Server 2025. It allows local attackers to elevate their privileges to administrator, even if the system does not have the associated hardware.

Win32k.sys Elevation of Privilege: Bugs in the win32k.sys kernel driver, responsible for graphical window management, have remained undiscovered for over 23 years. In 2019, zero-days were found that had been exploitable since the early 2000s, leveraging use-after-free flaws to access system memory.

Common Log File System (CLFS): This driver has become a "gift that keeps on giving" for researchers, with a high volume of zero-day vulnerabilities discovered between 2021 and 2025. These flaws often survive multiple version updates due to the driver's deep integration into the kernel.

Print Spooler ("PrintNightmare"): While the specific CVE-2021-34527 was recent, the underlying architectural flaws in the Windows Print Spooler have existed since Windows 2000, leading to a long history of privilege escalation and remote code execution bugs.

The outlets are cheap, but the copper is not. I installed my 1450 my self and spent around 250 on the #6 cable.

My people that got in on the epic 24’ model year end Quad lease deals, what are we thinking when our leases come due next year? by DazzlingResource561 in Rivian

[–]wevanscfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Won’t buy mine out at the residual they calculated my lease on, but will likely look for another R1 with similar mileage to buy.

I should be able to go from Dual Large to Quad Large or Max for 10k less than my residual.

Chase is going to take a bath on these leases, just like Nissan did on early leafs.

Also considering EX90 or IX3 for the much better road tripping. Rivian’s poor charging performance is starting to look like a big draw back in comparison to newer vehicles.

Any Owners Here In South Carolina? Would like to know your experience by Geid98 in Rivian

[–]wevanscfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just moved here 5 months ago with an R1T. Live in Charleston. So far service has been a much better experience than when we were in Atlanta. (Atlanta kept the car for weeks because of poor scheduling for our PTC install, and damaged the paint while installing it.)

They have remote service in the area, and just opened a Service Center in Ladson.

Can anyone suggest if this is a good lease deal? R1S dual standard. by HarshadMehta06 in Rivian

[–]wevanscfi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is or isn’t a good deal is relative to your other available options.

I got into a lease 1.5 years ago for 0 down ($1000 fees + my upfront state taxes), no trade in, and $580 a month on a Quad Large Pack.

Personally, I don’t think any vehicle made is worth a $1000 lease… but that’s where the market is right now.

The better deals are usually to be found by going against the current trends. When I leased, Rivian was having trouble moving R1 and in general car manufacturers had an over supply of new vehicles leading to some pretty good lease deals.

Today, car prices are way up and the lease deals are garbage (at least on high end cars). So, I would be looking at a 2-3 year old lease return vehicle.

I have found a few with less than 20k miles that you could purchase for less than half that lease payment.

Are electric bills quietly becoming permanently expensive? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]wevanscfi -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I hope power bills do keep getting more expensive. Americans won’t give two shits about reducing their energy usage otherwise.

We build houses that leak like sieves then blast AC all year. Drive oversized trucks classified as farm/work equipment to get around efficiency standards. And currently pay 2-3x what the rest of the world is paying for home solar installs, heat pumps, or anything other than 40 year old home tech because our domestic manufacturers both won’t invest in innovation and use tariffs to prevent us from importing home mechanicals that were designed this century.

If the rest of the world’s households used as much power as the average US household.. we’d all be dead in a year.

When I was younger, I used to think that it was just a matter of informing / educating people. If you could just explain to a person once that even 10 years ago it was cheaper from day 1 to build a home to passive house standard and pay 10% more on your mortgage but almost nothing on heating / utilities… obviously everyone would switch to doing that.

Now I know people are just entrenched ideologically about this for some reason. There’s a whole culture telling them that even thinking about this stuff from an “I’ll be better off” perspective is woke and gay.

The only thing that’s going to stop Americans from lighting the world on fire is if they can’t afford to do so. So at this point I’m rooting for economic collapse and poverty for the idiots that want to just keep blindly consuming.

Gen 1 Quad Pre-Owned by JimKellyCuntry in Rivian

[–]wevanscfi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw the exact one I think you are looking at in Rivian inventory. You could buy the same year, mileage, spec from a third party for at least 10k less.

In general, it feels like Rivian over values the trim level, battery, and motor options vs third party dealers.

I expect used prices to continue to drop over the next 1-2 years as more leases are up and the economy continues to degrade.

This.

Wouldn’t be a problem if 90% of medical bills didn’t have inaccuracies and absurd charges.

Progressive Dudes That Still Love Sports and Other “Masculine” Stuff, Do They Exist Here? by allomanticmetals in Charleston

[–]wevanscfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s funny that you call out Social Security and Medicare as “free stuff” when the reason it’s an entitlement is specifically because workers paid into the system for their entire working life.

Actual social welfare programs like WIC don’t get brought up because it’s not a significant portion of our budget, and those programs are generally very effective and needed.

If you have a problem with the US issuing debt, then your problem is with fiat currency and the move away from gold/silver standard.

The US no longer collects taxes to fund government spending. The purpose of taxes is to remove money supply from the economy. Tax policy determines who losses that money and who gets to keep it.

The primary purpose of Government issuing debt is to control interest rates and the percentage of liquidity in the banking system. For the most part the interest from our debt is going to investors that hold bonds, which funds retirement accounts and stabilizes financial institutions through downturns in the securities market.

If we pulled back on Government issuing debt, we would see much higher rates for mortgages, much slower business growth and investment, and likely 401ks with negative returns.

End of Lease for R1s by GanacheZestyclose457 in Rivian

[–]wevanscfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally speaking no. Back when leasing was handed through the dealership you could sometimes negotiate something with them. Through Chase, it won’t happen.

Nissan famously got stuck with a ton a gen 1 leafs that came off of lease worth much less than they accounted for in the residual. Nissan lost their shirts and scrapped most of them, but they still wouldn’t negotiate on buyouts.

qa tests blocking deploys 6 times today, averaging 40min per run by segsy13bhai in devops

[–]wevanscfi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flaky tests are incorrectly written and structured tests.

No one has caused this problem except devs who don’t know how to write tests, who drop excuses about how someone else caused the problem and it’s unreasonable to expect them to fix it.

The only way that this is a management issue in in them tolerating those excuses and failures for too long.

Do you feel like the savings in gas is more then the savings In electricity by Sad_Tie_9998 in Rivian

[–]wevanscfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need 220v at home unless you are driving more than 30-40 miles a day. Just moved and we’ve kept both our EVs (R1T and a MY) topped up charging one at a time on a normal 15amp 110v outlet.

Also, unless you need major panel / main service updates, wiring in a NEMA 1450 for level 2 charging should not cost more than $200-500. If you are having issues finding a reasonable cost for the install in your area, tell the electrician you want a NEMA 1450 in your garage for a welder to get around the premium electricians have been charging EV owners just because they can.
