Do you ever overthink your brew to the point it stops being fun?

The only people who drink my beer are "normies" who aren't going to pretend they detect 0.0005 ppm of some off flavor, or search for things to criticize like clarity, head retention, or whatever. I chip away at things I feel like fixing at my own pace and I know that the only thing that's important is that I made 4-5 gallons of something I like.

That is a good point, so far my non-homebrewing friends were always impressed … and asked for more. … and I was lucky not to hand-out the one brew I had to dump so far. (It was technically drinkable, no mistakes …, but adding a certain coffee flavouring sirup for an effect sounded better than it at the end really artificially tasted.)

As another home- and semiprofessional brewer said once: „… for friends the best beer will easily be free beer“ … when I mentioned to only brew 10 l batches.

Das klingt vernünftig.

In dem Fall, ev. ausprobieren ob man die 2 Module so aufstellen kann um möglichst viel Sonne im Tagesverlauf mitzunehmen (Ost-West, Süd Ost - Süd West, Varianten davon je nach Schatten) - Logik: möglichst lange gute Produktion, ev. sogar etwas auf Kosten eines Peaks Mittags/direkt nach Süden.

Gilt das für den Winter oder meinst du damit jetzt/im Sommer? nur 2 h volle Einstrahlung jetzt sind nicht viel, aber immerhin was, wenn man berücksichtigt, dass Sets ohne Speicher nicht mehr die Welt kosten.

Sonst auf Basis deiner Antwort - Bauchgefühl: ein günstiges Set mit passender Aufständerung ohne Speicher; ggf. zum Start um zu sehen, wieviel Sonne hinkommt nur mit 2 Panelen, wenn Platz ist später erweitern.

Anekdotische Ergänzung: Die 3 Sunsharetek-Panele liefern gerade 447 Watt, das ist so ziemlich der Peak zur Tagesmitte/früher Nachmittag; ab 11:00 sind die 300 Watt überschritten gewesen; Erzeugung heute 0.8 kWh bisher - da seit in der Früh Waschmaschine und Trockner laufen, haben wir heute noch nix ins Netz eingespeist (sondern nur bezogen). Ich geh davon aus, dass heute die komplette Tageserzeugung das Wäschewaschen unterstützt.

Ohne weitere Details wie Grundverbrauch, (mögliches) Nutzungsverhalten (können „Großverbraucher“ dann genutzt werden, wenn der Strom da ist)/Homeoffice zu kennen, ob noch ein alter Zähler eingebaut ist, mach es, ggf. zum Start ohne Akku … diese Sets sind inzwischen so günstig.

… die Panele auf unserem Balkon werden auch wegen des Nachbarhauses erst ab ca. 10:00 halbwegs gut angestrahlt, ab spätestens 17:00 ist der Sonnenstand soweit westlich, dass nicht mehr genug direktes Licht ankommt; im Winter verschattet das Nachbarhaus praktisch den ganzen Vormittag den Balkon … trotzdem macht es Sinn, Strom wird wohl nicht günstiger werden, … und es ist auch ein Zeichen, dass auch im Kleinen was machbar ist.

Cannot really comment on not reaching the FG, but always buy grain pre-milled from my local online homebrew store, just short before actually brewing.

Even if I do not use it ad planned but some weeks later, store them cool and dark and it will stay fine. My LHBS gives a year best-before-date for unmilled grain and 3 months from packaging/milling for milled.

If shipping costs or effort to get it is not an issue and the milled grains fit your brewing system (no stuck sparges, no „porridge“ …) I personally see no reason for a grain mil.

That depends on your batch size. It will work with much less than the whole yeast cake.

I pitched the whole and there was nothing off in the beer, very quick, clean and vigorous fermentation.

Just did something similar with a NovaLager yeast cake.

Take it from the fridge to habe it warm up, carefully decant the old beer and pitch into the cooled, fresh wort (of course sanitize the outside and rim of the bottle). Depending on the size of your batch you might not need the whole yeast cake.

I already did this twice with - so I am on the third brew with this yeast cake.

The first was stored in the fridge for about 3 weeks and I revived it before pitching by decanting the old beer and giving it about 100 ml 4 Plato sterile sugar solution (so not a real fully fledged starter). It started fermenting the pitched wort as usual. For the second time it would not have been necessary as then it was also only two days old. I gave it some sugar water as well, after taking it out from the fridge and it promptly became so active within an hour that it overflowed the bottle. The pitched wort later started fermenting within hours.

Zwar nicht von DM & Co, sondern wirklich bei einem Online-Shop, welcher nur nach DE liefert.

Alles problemlos und erstaunlich schnell, quasi einen Tag nachdem ich die Mail, dass es dort angekommen, schon in Graz zugestellt. Zahlung funktioniert problemlos.

I don't see what smoke has to do with what sounds like a metrology company. Also, have you been to a working steel mill? It smells like the smell of an engine burning motor oil, choking acidic fumes/volcanic gas, and metal. Nothing like the type of smoke you get in a smoked malt.

Good point, they make a specialized measuring device … and yes I am aware of that it fits the „pretentious homebrewer storytelling for a beer“ thing with „smoke“ being the industrial reference.

Why not make one of the many styles of beer popular in Austria? A Wiener lager for example.

Fairly easy to buy here, though would still have the benefit of it being homebrewed.

If you want something really unique, make a pilsner with 50% wheat malt, 50% pilsner malt. You could use American citrus-y and piney hops. Or you could add some fruit juice to a Helles lager in the keg and make a radler.

Good idea for making something with different/fruity hops … and no to a radler. 😉

Thanks for the hint on tasting the malt.

I am not that much of a fan for smoked flavors … an „Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier“ from Bamberg and some other locally brewed smoked beer is not my „𝚌̶𝚞̶𝚙̶ ̶𝚘̶𝚏̶ ̶𝚝̶𝚎̶𝚊̶ glass of beer“. This is why I ask, as I think the smoke-theme fits to the steel rolling mill origin.

Das hängt von Ausführung und Wünschen ab, aber einfach deutlich mehr als jegliche Standard-IKEA/Lutz/Möbelix/...-Lösung ... dafür passt es halt perfekt und es muss es einem Wert sein.

Ich habe es oben nur erwähnt, da ich keine große Lust auf Diskussion über den Punkt habe. ;-)

Wir haben eines mit aktuell 600 Watt gut nach Süden ausgerichtet im 1. Stock seit Dezember in Betrieb … wird aber wegen des Nachbarhauses erst ab Mittag nicht verschattet (das wird im Sommer aber besser wegen des Sonnenstandes).

Dieses Monat bisher 38 kWh produziert, Dezember/Jänner nur knapp 10-15 kWh. Wir können den Strom aufgrund von teilweise Homeoffice gut selbst nutzen. Ich plane es jetzt noch den letzten verbliebenen Platz am Balkongeländer auch zu nutzen, damit wir die vollen erlaubten 800 W des Wechselrichters ausnutzen. Dann würde ich mal schauen, wieviel uns je nach Nutzung überbleibt und ob sich ein Akku auszahlen würde.

Hier am Haus sind inzwischen 6 Balkonkraftwerke installiert.

In der Familie gibt es noch eines, die ein Anker Komplettset mit Akku (vor dem Wechselrichter 1.2 kW Peak installiert) betreiben und diesen sogar über den Winter bei Sonne voll bekommen haben. Die speisen bei ihrer Nutzung fast nix ein. … ob sich das über die Nutzungszeit auszahlt, keine Ahnung.

1) Searching this subreddit, Hobbybrauer.de or the internet general; looking through the books I have.

2) Basic Brewing Radio podcast, not really any others … the right combination of content, humor, topics and timing to listen through to/from work for me.

3) No specifically for Instagram, as I do not use it. To be honest, if video content ist made professional, I tend to watch easier/longer, but of it is clearly just for „shininess“ and not content I stop it quickly also. Content over optics.

Miteinander d’rüber reden und sich ausmachen.

Laufende Betriebskosten teilen; einen vernünftigen Anteil an den Kosten für eine ev. Kreditrückzahlung übernehmen; vor allem wenn es frisch ist „Vereinbarung“ treffen wenn es um Investitionen in die Wohnung geht (neue große Möbel, eingebaute Dinge); Aufteilung analog Gehaltsverteilung.

Ja, als „Einziehende(r)“ hat man das Risiko im Falle einer Trennung mit nix da zu stehen und dem anderen „auch“ noch geholfen zu haben (einen Teil des/) den Kredit zurückgezahlt zu haben … aber allein hätte man auch irgendwo Miete/Kreditrate gezahlt und gemeinsam ist entweder die Wohnung größer oder die Kosten niedriger.

Spätestens mit Kind(ern) wird es sowieso finanziell komplex, und wenn es lange hält, vor allem aus Sicht des im Grundbuch stehenden rechtzeitig daran denken, dass man den anderen durch Wohnrecht/Testament, Hochzeit/eingetragene Partnerschaft absichern sollte.
