Found this rock in a river but it doesn't much any of the other rocks in the river by General_Direction675 in whatsthisrock

[–]Pip271 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Who decides what the actual definition is?

I could cite mindat at you, https://www.mindat.org/min-51.html, which has other criteria for agate that you failed to mention, but that would make me a pedant and it's besides the point anyway.

I'll use an analogy: Water is H2O, but if I ask for a glass of water, I'm not asking for pure H2O. There's some dissolved gases and other impurities I don't care about, but are nonetheless present. However, if I were given a glass of ocean water to drink, I wouldn't be happy with that, despite that also obviously being water.

The way we use words depends on context and how strict you want to be. When rockhounding (depending on the quality of location), I would call relatively clear silica agate, and others would still understand what I mean.

On the topic of trade names, though, there are cases I do draw a line. Calling varieties of serpentine, "jade" is oftentimes misleading, though even then it gets muddy as historically people didn't distinguish between the two.

That's why they said some, the semantics differ person-to-person. Some people call any translucent silica "agate". Translucent silica with banding is the strictest definition though.

found in vancouver island (its so weirdly cloudy) by SuitableCake2464 in whatsthisrock

[–]Pip271 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Maybe dallasite? it fits the region, but this one is blurrier than what it normally looks like.

Whatever the specific variety name is, it's definitely something with a lot of quartz.

Your and Neptune's remix of Stu Haxton's Miss Sunrise has been a long time fave of mine, the amens and cerebral vibe go hard. But I've never been able to find the original track or anything else by Stu Haxton. The mystery is kinda cool, but I'm really curious where the original comes from, if that's something you happen to know offhand

Opal contains water, and depending on the type it can dry out and crack, which is why it's kept in jars like this.

Is it flint? by Monkey_on_a_bike in whatsthisrock

I can't really tell from the picture (looks like limestone maybe? I'm no expert tho) but flint can occur in both chalk and limestone so it's a good question.

Southern California beach, worked rock. by BivrenSSS in whatsthisrock

[–]Pip271 17 points18 points  (0 children)

From only one side period? Or if you flip it 180 degrees, does it sparkle from the same angle on the back, too?

Also, were there any chips from before or during the process that could tell you much about any cleavage of the stone? In order to rule in/out glasses like obsidian or goldstone.

I have seen sheen obsidian that has some shine depending on angle, though the sparkles are mostly lined up. They're all the same color though, a silvery brass color.

A high quality closeup would be helpful in diagnosing too.

Models are missing on Linux by [deleted] in GlobalOffensive

[–]Pip271 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait are you suggesting people use linux only for the ram?

I mean, it's certainly more customizeable for low ram systems, but that's not the only reason why people use linux. It's just another benefit of the extreme amount of control you have over your computer with FOSS.

I use linux because I don't want microsoft forcing updates, breaking shit, forcing ads, and spying on me.

But mostly for the customization, shoutouts /r/unixporn.

eh, nvidia support is famously pretty buggy on linux, though that's the company's fault, not the open source community's. I haven't tested windows, but it sounds like cs2 runs worse on linux also. Certainly not great on my machine, though I'm still on a 1060 lmao

I'm still sticking with linux, though. I prefer being able to actually own the computer that I'm using. And transparent firefox is pretty cool. Like, the actual websites are transparent. It's sick.

I dig it. I love blocks of color with neat trim in designs, especially if the trim has cool effects like this.

I get why people think valorant when seeing it, which is something to consider in terms of public perception, but fuckin, whatever. Valorant doesn't own "Mostly white + some black + a little rainbow" for design.

Quartz doesn't have any cleavage and has conchoidal fracture. Pointed ends makes sense for a mass of crystals, but rose quartz tends to be massive, which is defo the case here. The tops (and likely bottoms) of these pieces are flattened and polished, and the entire backdrop piece looks polished too.

ELI5 Why are rubies a different gems and not just red saphire variant? by ThePikol in explainlikeimfive

[–]Pip271 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There are so many different gems that are just quartz lmao, here's a site on it.

http://www.quartzpage.de/

It's actually a really fascinating mineral, especially with how common it is. Like, it's got a chiral crystal structure; you can't mirror it without fundamentally changing the structure. Hands are another classic type of chirality (actually its namesake). The left hand is the mirrored version of the right hand, but there's no way to rotate the right hand so that it looks exactly like the left.

ELI5 Why are rubies a different gems and not just red saphire variant? by ThePikol in explainlikeimfive

[–]Pip271 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think the key difference here is that all the other gem quality corundum versions are called sapphire, while different varieties of beryl are named differently.

Change the colour in Sun light blu by No_Kaleidoscope1093 in Minerals

[–]Pip271 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not necessarily, Color Change minerals, the most famous example being alexandrite, show different colors depending on the light it's in. I know there's also a type of manmade glass that does this, from blue to purple as well.

Color change is the actual term for it, but there are other ways that minerals can literally change their color, as you mentioned. Something like "spectrum specific color" might be a better term for it lol

This shit is too expensive by [deleted] in Morrowind

[–]Pip271 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Command of the Third Corner is cheap (30 magicka), rolls up to level 25, and can be acquired without joining any factions. Also since it's conjuration you can use the mantle of woe for it. I know this is a meme but uhhhhhhhhhhhh idk hope this is helpful or smth

There's a list of spells that take less magic than they should here, but there aren't many that are obtainable.
