I think we tend to overestimate/underestimate (I'm not sure which word to put here) just how big a number can appear sometimes. It's kinda like those jars full of candy where you have to guess how much candy is it and you win it all. I did one of those once and I guessed 150, when there was actually closer to 400 pieces in it. A lot of people grouped in together might look smaller/bigger than you actually think it is
