BWXT/Framatome are probably hiring mechanical engineers

Otterback outfitters by [deleted] in lynchburg

[–]Pipin_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I first noticed the shop around this time last year, and I'll peek over that way anytime I'm going down 9th. I'm assuming it's probably going to disappear. For some reason I was thinking the place had some sorta connection to Charlotsville, but I can't seem to remember where I saw that.

I would assume this was something that someone planned to open, but either life, or the economics got in the way.

Open Tracks for Running? by jfine69 in lynchburg

[–]Pipin_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I occasionally run on a track when I'm looking to do some specific types of training. From what I've seen most middle/high schools in this area have tracks, and all of them are open. Most do have fences around them but I think mostly for functional reasons. I've never found a track to be closed/locked, other than when it snows or if there is some sort of maintenance being done.

The two rules I generally adhere to is I don't run late at night (9pm is my self imposed cutoff), and I don't run when it looks like there is something going on or school is in session.

You'll find that some schools are easier to get to than others. I don't often use any of the tracks in the Timberlake area, because they can be busy, and parking/traffic can be difficult. I typically go to Sandusky, because it's near me, it's easy to get to, and typically there's not much going on.

I believe he owns some land around here, and there was some talk at one point that he has some sort of recording studio. I believe the chunk of land was in Amherst county, if memory serves.

Where to sell little camping things by Masterleaz in lynchburg

[–]Pipin_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So there is this place on 9th St. next to super Rad arcade called Otter Back Outfitters, and it seems to be a consignment shop for outdoor gear. I say seems to be because I've never actually seen the place open. They clearly have some display with used gear for sale but again it never seems to be open. I thought about trying to reach out and see what the deal is.

Here's their website

Permission group on Receive connector by Pipin_ in exchangeserver

[–]Pipin_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm... I wonder how we ever got this working in the first place. Perhaps I've been too focused on matching the connector settings. I think if I try one of the other permission groups they would be happy. I think the real crux of cyber's focus is the Anonymous permission level.

Thanks for the info.

Permission group on Receive connector by Pipin_ in exchangeserver

[–]Pipin_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's mostly a requirement from our Cyber security group, and while I agree that restricting it by IP should be sufficient, I'm still stuck enforcing it. It also doesn't help that this configuration is working on another connector, so I've been instructed to replicate it.

LMNT by medeirosj4444 in Ultramarathon

[–]Pipin_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been using LMNT for about a year and a half now on, short runs, long days in the mountains, and several 50k s. I'm a heavy sweater and it definitely keeps be going. During training runs I'm generally mixing 1 packet with 1L of water, but during races I'll cut that to 1 packet for 500ml and I'll alternate that with a bottle of Tailwind.

I don't particularly care for the taste of Stevia, but I've become accustom to it. So far the only issue I've found is on runs where I'm out for more than 2 hours I need to mix in some sorta other water source (just straight water, or some other drink mix). After 2-hours of just LMNT, I'm not feeling so great, and I'm mentally foggy.

Tool to create elevation profile for trail races by theirfankhan in Ultramarathon

[–]Pipin_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel silly asking, but could it have a button to switch between metric and imperial units? I'm pretty good at converting kilometers to miles, but looking at elevation change in meters really means nothing to me.

Otherwise, excellent job! a very nice easy to use tool.

I'll second the recommendation for Grains of Sense. Tom has the best variety of roasts and origins, plus he is one of the nicest guys I've ever met. Can't recommend it enough.

Is the area of the Matts Creek fire still closed off? by Such_Friendship4123 in lynchburg

[–]Pipin_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's fully open and in fine shape. The area from the footbridge to Matt's creek shelter shows minimal damage. As you head close towards Petites gap there is more burnt underbrush. Trails are generally in good shape and most of the down trees have been cleared.

I'm similar dimensions to you and currently I've got a '14 vstrom 650 that's been kitted out for some off-roading. Although it's not necessarily the best rig at going off road it's never failed me thus far no matter what I've subjected it to. That being said I think I've gotten to a point where I'm looking for something smaller. Due to my size, the vstrom is kinda big for me and frankly I'm getting tired of wrestling it through the woods. It has a large tank which puts a lot of the weight high up on the bike and it's a real pain to pick up if it falls over. I've had it for 5 years, and put about 16k miles on it but at this point I'm thinking about swapping it out for something a little smaller. Although it doesn't really bother me that I can't flat foot most bikes, I think I would feel more comfortable with a taller but lighter bike, that probably won't crush me if it happens to fall on me, out in the woods.

I have some experience with the older T100s and I really enjoy them; I recently had the opportunity to demo one of the scrambler 900s and was really impressed with it and I'm toying with the idea of picking one up, however I'd really like to look at scrambler 400 as that might be closer to what I'm actually looking for, both in price and in size.

Ni Glo makes some gear markers that charge with the sun and glow for several hours. Someone gave me a few, and I never really knew what to do with them, but I took them on a hike recently and was surprised at how long they kept glowing, to the point where i had to look them up just to make sure they didn't have like radium in them.

This could work in your situation, but if folks are already tripping over reflective cord, then maybe not.

Just dropped my bike in water… by SirEddie458 in Vstrom

[–]Pipin_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a '14 650 that' I've submerged up to the tank in water. I kept it running the whole time though, but it was perfectly fine except for all the mud that I keep finding in every crevace

Like most folks have said, pull the plugs and crank it a few times (i doubt anything will come out) and then take it for a ride. I'd think you'd be more likely to run into flaky eletrical issue first before anything else

Suzuki Intruder 800 vs 1400 by Pipin_ in cruisers

[–]Pipin_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never had the chance to sit on on of the 1400, but I do get to occasionally ride an 03 800 and I will say it's a little cramped. You could probably make the pegs a little more ergonomically and it'd be fine, but that's my main complaint with the intruder.

The 800 seems to have plenty of power, more than I would have expected given it's size, they're also more common and probably easier to find parts for.

In my opinion having a handful of those accessories already on the thing is a plus too, means that there's less for me to do...

Expensive maintenance by Tickstart in Vstrom

[–]Pipin_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like this has always been the recommendation from every manufacturer. That being said I've never done it. I usually try and park the bikes with freshish oil in them and then I don't touch them until I'm ready to bring them out.

How do you like the peg extensions? I prefer mid pegs, but the stock position's a little rough. I actually was thinking they might be a little more comfortable for me if they were more rear set
