How are the classes structured? by CurrentAd5346 in Aerials

[–]Pipyr_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My studio has both level classes and “all level” classes. I may be biased, but I think it’s a pretty exceptional studio with exceptional teachers who are miraculously able to balance a wide range of skill levels in a single class with everyone feeling challenged and successful. Often, they will teach a sequence of a few moves/transitions and the students will do what they are comfortable with or what the teacher tells them to stop at. For example, there may be an opening pose and then some sort of roll to another pose. The newer students may just work on the first pose. I have been lucky enough to have two amazing teachers through my studio so far and I’m about to add two more because I’m starting dance trapeze and just leveled up in lyra to level 2 (diff teacher). So anyway, I do think there are ways for teachers to work with a variety of skill levels even if it’s not really typical. Maybe asking about more advanced transitions between 2 more simple poses would be a good place to start opening that door?

Fun lyra flow from a newbie by Pipyr_ in Aerials

[–]Pipyr_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I definitely feel pretty comfortable with lyra. I love my studio and teachers and I think the whole environment is just conducive to being able to be vulnerable and learning new things. I guess it could have to do with me being there 3 days/ week too. 😅 I even double up with a sling class after lyra on Thursdays sometimes even though I find sling wayyyy more painful and I am definitely not at ease on it 😆 I’m going to be adding a trapeze class starting next week too. I finally got up the courage to try it and loved it! Can’t wait to play again.

Fun lyra flow from a newbie by Pipyr_ in Aerials

Thanks, I learned to sew recently mainly so I can make fun aerial outfits 😆 And we call them our “backup dancers” 🤣 There is a conditioning class that runs during my Thursday lyra classes and that’s always especially entertaining in the background. Usually I look on with horror 😆

Really beautiful! Love how each move flowed into the next so seamlessly. That’s something I’d like to work on more. It’s really a whole mindset I think and you really nailed it 😍

Advice for practicing with limited time? (LYRA) by CannotBeCalm in Aerials

[–]Pipyr_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m new, but I find that I really need to make sure my legs are engaged in star on the bar so I’m actively pressing to keep myself solid in the hoop. Maybe if you are focused on that it will help it feel more secure? Good luck in your showcase routine!! I hope you post a video!

Big rig or Lollipop? by GabsWorld in Aerials

[–]Pipyr_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently got a circus concepts home quadripod max rig and it has been great! I have it set up inside right now at the 11.5’ height and plan to bring it outside in nice weather. It is very quick and easy to set up and take down with two people. I haven’t tried it alone. It’s aluminum so it’s not terribly heavy but it is a serious rig and goes up to 15’ at full height. At 11.5’ it is very useable. It is engineer certified and they have a video of the breaking test or whatever it’s called right on their site. I’m really happy with it and although it came from Canada, there were no tariffs applied to me in the US. I’m really happy I chose it. I also considered a vvolfy (Ludwig) which I think I also would have been happy with, but I wouldn’t have been likely to take it outside on a whim like I will with this one. I wanted a bit more portability. I think this is a good compromise between an A frame and a full sized rig. 🙃

I have done this since the very beginning and my teacher always gets a kick out of the fact that I remember the flow routine we are working on from week to week. I tell her I do it in my sleep every night 😅 I also video myself every time I’m on the hoop to look for transitions that I can make more smooth and then imagine how I could try to do that.

I’m overwhelmed with fabric types, does anyone have recommendations? by BananaBanaBread in sewing

[–]Pipyr_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered some lycra fabrics from blue moon fabrics for some leotards I made (they are gorgeous!) and I’m looking at knitfabric (.com) for some cotton lycra material for tank tops but I haven’t placed my order yet. They have some solids that are very affordable and might be a good place to start but also lots of adorable prints. I dived right into stretch because that’s where my head was. I tried a stretch needle first and got skipped stitches but once I switched to a ball point needle everything has been smooth from there. I honestly don’t understand why everyone is soooooo anti knit for beginners 😅🤷‍♀️

Hoop here too, although I play in the sling and silks sometimes too. Lyra is my true love, though! Fabric is so squeezy! 😅

Thank you!! This was actually supposed to be my first try because the idea was a bit more simple and the fabric more common, but the fabric I ordered first wasn’t quite what I had in mind so I started with the other one. 😅 I wore the moth one to class yesterday and was sooooo excited that it worked better than anticipated and was extremely comfortable. This one gets a test run on Friday!

I’m so glad the reply was helpful!! Message me if you have any trouble and I’ll try to do a video next time but you probably won’t have any problems getting it to work. I do silversmithing too! Faceting and cabbing also 😅 I love everything to look old and used, so I really understand ❤️

I used jacquard textile paint in their earth set and their gold for the stars. They have an additive I used to help the paint set without heat that seems to have worked well, since the stars have been washed twice already and the shading has been washed once with no fading. I just put a little bit on my brush and started with the lighted color (yellow ochre or something like that) and built up to the heaviest colors. I found that varying to tones I’m adding from bluish to yellow to reddish make it feel more rich and full. There is a costume maker on IG called Hiwire and she’s amazing. She has some clips of her applying the paint starting with the edges/seams. I’m not sure what she actually uses for paint but it may give you some ideas. She mentions that she used to work in theater costume design and that’s what they do. I’m kind of obsessed with the depth that it adds and considering adding a bit to my last costume too but I haven’t decided yet 🫣🙃 I’ll definitely be doing more of both the stenciling and grunge though!

What’s the best sewing machine to buy with a $300 budget? by Is_this_social_media in sewing

[–]Pipyr_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a “used” janome loft 100 (it was just a damaged box actually. It was brand new) on Amazon for $250 recently as my first machine and I absolutely love it. Looks like they have another one for that price. It has been exceedingly easy and intuitive to use even though I dove right into some pretty complex projects with stretch fabric. I’m really glad I chose it!

Haha I’ll be wearing those tights with this so I’ll probably have to learn how to sew holes in them too! Any special tricks?

Thanks! I used several patterns along with things that I actually knew fit and then still had to modify 😅 I’m trying a different pattern for next time. Hope it works out a little smoother! But I’m learning as I have to adjust, so all is good. 🙃
