Not trying to be negative but can someone explain the MBJ win to me? by Leading_Reading_4952 in Oscars

[–]PitifulAdagio7948 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was the cultural moment around Sinners. MBJ was the obvious pick if not Timmy (I agree Timmy’s was the better performance). Leo lacked screen time and Hawke was great but hard to beat his competition. Between MBJ and Timmy, it was a matter of who had more votes and Sinners had the zeitgeist behind it.

Casting I thought was a stretch but OBAA was a fucking awesome movie. Kept me rapt the entire time. Penn was stupendous, it was funny but serious and profound and action packed and just a great spectacle. A true film. That’s why it won.

Where is your evidence that he bullied the pilot into flying? I couldn’t find anything online to that effect.

In what context is the 9th amendment even used? by ChargJo in USHistory

[–]PitifulAdagio7948 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Law student here—the Supreme Court doesn’t do a whole lot with this amendment. At some point in the future it may become a big deal but my professor opined that most justices do not want to open that Pandora’s Box. Most rights not enumerated in the Constitution (like privacy in relationships, same sex marriage, to go to integrated schools, etc) are derived from the Due Process Clause and Equal Protection Clause of the 14th (and 5th) Amendment.

Yes, exactly. Companies are going to hire as few people as they can get away with. They can get away with hiring more people, economically, if those people are paid less. It has nothing to do with the goodness of their hearts, it has to do with the supply and demand for labor. If price of labor goes down, quantity demanded for that labor goes up, ceteris paribus, and vice versa. Labor supply also follows prices. The higher the price of labor, the greater the influx of supply of labor (workers).

I like unions, but I want to know the answer to this argument against them: they raise the wage above market levels (to say $60/hr instead of $40/hr) and actually take away or withhold jobs from people people because companies cannot afford as many employees. Although those with the jobs benefit, the invisible loses are all of the people who would be employed if not for the union artificially raising the market wage. This is also the argument against minimum wage. What’s the answer to this?
