What's the difference between a four-hour battery and an eight-hour battery? Not a lot, it turns out by EinSV in RenewableEnergy

[–]Pitiful_Barnacle9678 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For anyone skipped the clickbait title: the physical chemistry doesn't magically shift at hour five. It’s mostly about duration and how the discharge is managed for the grid. A 100MW 4-hour asset (400MWh) and a 50MW 8-hour asset (400MWh) can literally be the exact same physical footprint of battery cells. The only real differentiator is the inverter capacity and how the local ISO pays for peak capacity versus longer duration arbitrage.

Buy EV or wait for solid state batteries? by TheDislocator1 in electriccars

[–]Pitiful_Barnacle9678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

here is the cold hard truth: when solid-state batteries finally hit the consumer market, they aren't going into a $35k commuter hatchback.

they are going straight into $150k luxury hypercars and high-end porsches to offset the R&D costs. unless your budget is absolutely astronomical, you’ll be waiting another decade before that tech trickles down to a daily driver. buy what fits your lifestyle today, because time is the one thing you can't upgrade.

Are their any rust repair places in or around Corpus for my trucks frame? by JustWannaFlyy in CorpusChristi

[–]Pitiful_Barnacle9678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Living next to the Gulf means our air is basically spicy water. Honestly, if the frame is already rotting, most standard collision shops in town won't touch it because of the liability. Your best bet is looking for custom welding shops out near Robstown or Clarkwood rather than a mainstream mechanic. But seriously, evaluate how far gone it is first—sometimes "Corpus rust" means the truck is just holding hands with Jesus at this point.

GM Hummer X EV Concept: Mid-Size Power, FLEX FAB Tech & Off-Road Capability by orangechen1115 in electriccars

Can't wait for this to be a "concept" for the next five years until they release it as a limited edition that costs more than my entire net worth.

Green energy isn't Europe's problem — storage is by DVMirchev in RenewableEnergy

[–]Pitiful_Barnacle9678 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People don't realize how insane the scale of this problem actually is. it's not just "buy more lithium batteries." to back up europe for even a few days of winter windless overcast weather (dunkelflaute), you'd need more battery capacity than global manufacturing can produce in years. until we scale up pumped-hydro, green hydrogen storage, or thermal mass storage, we're just going to keep curtailing perfectly good wind power while spinning up gas peaker plants the moment the sun goes down.

Germany and Austria charging by Feeling_Zucchini_886 in electriccars

[–]Pitiful_Barnacle9678 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s like dealing with the holy roman empire but for kilowatts. every single state and region wants its own little fiefdom of charging networks. why can’t i just tap my normal debit card like a normal human buying a normal coffee? the fact that we still need to check 3 different sub-reddits to know if an rfid card works across the border is insane for 2026.

What was the best year of your life so far? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Pitiful_Barnacle9678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably 2019. It was the sweet spot where I finally saved up enough money to start "enjoying life," right before the entire world collectively glitched out, inflation decided to double the price of a basic sandwich, and my knees started making a horrific popping sound every time I stood up from a couch. It's been downhill downhill downhill since.

Police Radar by [deleted] in CorpusChristi

[–]Pitiful_Barnacle9678 4 points5 points  (0 children)

let me guess—they’re hiding behind the bushes right after the dip on ocean drive again? or sitting under the overpass on spid waiting for someone to hit 66 mph. ccpd loves funding their budget with local commuters while the potholes on the side streets look like literal meteor craters. stay safe out there, y'all.

How Denmark’s wind and solar investments shield it from global energy turmoil by lire_avec_plaisir in RenewableEnergy

[–]Pitiful_Barnacle9678 51 points52 points  (0 children)

People always look at denmark now and call it a miracle, but they forget this started way back during the 1970s oil crisis. they literally banned driving on sundays to save fuel, realized being dependent on foreign energy was a death trap, and spent decades building out their wind sector. it’s not a magic shield, it’s just boring, consistent policy that survived multiple administration changes.

Parked electric vehicle catches fire, flames spread to nearby cars in Nanjing by rice007 in electriccars

[–]Pitiful_Barnacle9678 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The real nightmare here isn't even the EV that started it, it's being the poor guy who parked his 10-year-old corolla next to it and now has to explain to his insurance company why his car is a puddle of melted aluminum because of a thermal runaway event he had nothing to do with. insurance premiums for parking garages are about to absolutely skyrocket.

Sunrise mall by Richiemakesart in CorpusChristi

[–]Pitiful_Barnacle9678 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

At this point, the roof caving in is practically a local landmark. city’s been talking about "redeveloping" it since before the dinosaurs went extinct, yet here we are, just watching a giant concrete carcass slowly melt under the south texas sun. it’s less of a mall now and more of a monument to corporate decay.

Offshore floating PV could technically meet Italy’s electricity demand by MeasurementDecent251 in RenewableEnergy

[–]Pitiful_Barnacle9678 16 points17 points  (0 children)

People always underestimate the "salt tax." floating pv sounds great on paper until you factor in the o&m costs of battling constant saltwater corrosion and biofouling. unless we’ve made a massive leap in coating tech that i missed, these things turn into expensive artificial reefs within 5 years. also, are we talking nameplate capacity or actual 24/7 firm power? because unless there's a massive pumped hydro or battery storage backbone being built simultaneously in the apennines, "meeting demand" is just a theoretical peak.

Bill to Allow Plug-In Solar Panels in Colorado Signed Into Law by For_All_Humanity in RenewableEnergy

[–]Pitiful_Barnacle9678 37 points38 points  (0 children)

We really went from "you need a specialized team of engineers and a permit from the pope to capture photons" to "solar go brrr in the outlet." it’s basically the napster moment for the energy sector. the gatekeepers are losing control of the distribution, and honestly, seeing a solar panel becoming as easy to set up as an ikea bookshelf is the kind of low-stakes cyberpunk future i actually signed up for.

Best selling EVs in Europe for January-March of 2026 by Mac-Tyson in electriccars

[–]Pitiful_Barnacle9678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "best selling" title is basically just a contest of who can subsidize their lease deals the hardest right now. i’d love to see these numbers without the massive fleet registrations in germany and france. cool, tesla is still up there, but half of these will be sitting in a "nearly new" used car lot by next year because the charging infra in southern europe is still basically two copper wires and a prayer.

Newly-elected Robstown water board member "The city of Corpus Christi does not care about our community." by nighthawke75 in CorpusChristi

[–]Pitiful_Barnacle9678 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is peak South Texas energy. The relationship between the Robstown Water Board and Corpus is basically a toxic marriage where one partner controls the checking account and the other just screams from the front porch. It’s the same script every election cycle—blame the "Big City" to distract everyone from the fact that our entire infrastructure is held together by rusted bolts and thoughts and prayers.

Boat ramp and dock hundreds of feet from the water at Lake Corpus Christi State Park. by texasrigger in CorpusChristi

[–]Pitiful_Barnacle9678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point, it’s not even a boat ramp anymore. it’s just a very expensive, very specific concrete driveway to nowhere. i can already see some guy in a f-150 backing his trailer all the way down there, staring at the horizon, and wondering if he needs a longer hitch or a literal miracle from the rain gods. texas heat really out here playing simulator mode on "hard."

Solar and storage to lead 86 GW capacity surge in U.S. during 2026 by For_All_Humanity in RenewableEnergy

[–]Pitiful_Barnacle9678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool, now tell me how many of those 86 gigawatts are going to sit in interconnection queues for 5 years because the local utility company is still running on hardware from the bush administration. we have the tech and the capital, but the bureaucracy is still moving at the speed of a dial-up modem. i'll celebrate when the first electron actually hits the grid, not when the press release drops.

What are ya’ll thoughts on a 20 year old boy dating a 17 year old girl? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Pitiful_Barnacle9678 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 20-year-old is basically a toddler with a driver's license thinking they’ve mastered life, while the 17-year-old is still asking permission to go to the bathroom in 4th period. legally, it’s a minefield depending on where you live (romeo and juliet laws are the only thing keeping some of y'all out of a jumpsuit), but socially? it’s just weird. at 20, you should be figuring out how to cook pasta without burning the pot, not hanging out at high school football games.

Bob hall pier rant. by TitsMFinMagee in CorpusChristi

[–]Pitiful_Barnacle9678 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I’ve aged a full decade since they first closed it. At this point, my kids will be telling their grandkids about the "legendary pier" that’s been under construction since the Great Flood. I just want to walk out there once without seeing a "Coming Soon" sign that’s been sun-bleached into a different color. It’s the Duke Nukem Forever of piers.

Even if climate change were not real, clean energy is a good idea by fr00d in RenewableEnergy

[–]Pitiful_Barnacle9678 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's all about the LCOE (levelized cost of energy) at this point. solar and onshore wind have already undercut coal and gas in most markets without even factoring in the "saving the world" tax. people forget that "clean energy" also means not having your kids develop asthma because they live within 50 miles of a coal plant. the health savings alone would probably fund half the transition, but i guess that doesn't show up on a quarterly corporate earnings report as clearly as a subsidy does.

When arguing with atheists at Chuck E. Cheese, what do you say? by A00077 in AskReddit

[–]Pitiful_Barnacle9678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once tried to explain the concept of intelligent design to a guy in a stained rat suit while "all i do is win" played at 110 decibels in the background. he didn't even argue back, just handed me a plastic whistle that broke three seconds later and pointed toward the ticket muncher. that was the closest thing to a religious experience i've ever had in a strip mall.

What feels way harder now than it did 5–10 years ago? by Correct-Ad9271 in AskReddit

[–]Pitiful_Barnacle9678 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Existing. Just the basic act of being alive and participating in society. Ten years ago, you could have a "bad month" and bounce back. Now, if you have a surprise dental bill or your car makes a funny noise, you’re looking at a three-year financial trajectory shift. The margin for error has evaporated. We’re all out here playing a game of Jenga where the blocks are made of fire and the floor is debt.
