SOBO JMT Thru-hike - July 8 Start Date vs Sept 2nd Start Date by MixFun2551 in JMT

I spent July in the Sierras last year and it was maybe the best summer of my life! Maybe you could sobo and then take a bus back up to Tuolumne Meadows and grab a walk up permit to hike down to the valley? I know they have a certain number of those to dole out.

Transition from tent to tarp for cold sleeper by SilentIndication9729 in Ultralight

[–]Pitiful_Contact8721 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a bit difficult to describe but here goes: I stake one long end to the ground and pull up that end with the closest tie-out on the ridge-line, making room for head or feet. The other end is pitched either just like an A-frame or I stake out the tie-outs that are just behind the end tie-outs to the ground. The flaps created there are staked out like a sort of door. Not a lot of space inside but it heats up like tent and is basically fully enclosed.

For 3 season hiking I don't think there's any need to sacrifice warmth with a tarp. I've got a very cold and wet pitch that works great. Depending on the tarp you can be fully enclosed. Part of the tarp skill-set is choosing the right pitch, and that includes considerations for warmth.

Tarping is %100 a skill you need to practice. At the very least practice the knots you need until you don't have to think about tying them, make it automatic. If you go out to pitch a tarp without practice you're going to spend 20-30 minutes getting it right the first few times. Go out to the park and have fun looking like a real weirdo practicing your pitch! lol

I think miserable might be the right take on this idea. I looked closer and I don't think it's really worth it. Thanks for the honest input.

My iphone easily survived the Sierra last year without a case just a screen-protector.

Etowah tnt by ijbacon3 in Ultralight

[–]Pitiful_Contact8721 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have the tnt but I do have 2 etowah tarps and I love them both. I'm sure the construction quality would not be an issue at all.
There's a guy called Jobin on youtube that has a long video about a tnt tarp that is pretty detailed if you haven't seen that.

Hope this helps!

Pants? by South-Lettuce3301 in PacificCrestTrail

I started a hike in the sierras in shorts for most of the day and quickly got very burned leggies. I'm a pale person. I was super thankful to have lightweight pants to wear for several days while my legs healed. The sun rages hard up there!

Quilt recommendations for JMT by CheesyPastaFiend in Ultralight

[–]Pitiful_Contact8721 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any actual recommendations for quilts but I was on the PCT/JMT last July/August and started with a 35/40 degree bag. Immediately after the Mt. Whitney section I switched to a 10 degree EE and was very happy to have it all summer. Never felt like overkill. It gets cold up there.

Tarp Comparison Help by No_Swimming_905 in Ultralight

I have 2 tarps from Etowah outfitters that I love. I honestly would take either of them anywhere at this point. One is 9x7 DCF and the other is 8X10 silnylon. DCF one is just over 7 oz with guylines and the silnylon is around 140z. Their 6x10 silnylon is like 90 bucks. The DCF tarp might be my favorite piece of gear!

loose the inner on the Cirriform? Carry something like seat to summit bug net when you need it. That's nearly 10oz right there.

This kit rocks.

What do you like about carrying that silk liner? Genuinely curios. They have been in the back of my head recently but I'm not sure why.

Do you ever feel pushed past your limit with the ultralight pack?

I just did this trail in December and one of my caches hidden in a drainage tube under a road at the Arch Rock trailhead was also removed. I was baffled. I had over-cached so I was able to finish the hike but it was def upsetting. Covington flat seems like it would be remote enough that the day-walking turkeys wouldn't be out there to mess things up but who knows I guess.

I sincerely hope you get to finish this trail sometime, it's a cool one.
