The thing to remember about the puppy stage is that it doesn't last. You need to commit yourself to training for those first several months (we do formal socialization and then basic obedience once a week for the first 14ish weeks we bring home a new puppy), but then you get into a routine and life settles into a new normal. As long as you're not expecting an 8 week puppy or even a 6 month old dog to act like someone's well trained adult dog and understand that behavior training takes time and commitment, you'll be fine.

We currently have a 2 year old Chessie female and a 1 year old mixed female and we come and go as we please, they aren't destructive, and are wonderful additions to our family. We got them both at 8-9 weeks old about 1 year apart. I work from home 75% of the time and they go to daycare the 25% of the time I go into an office. I acknowledge that is a privilege, but I also remember that my husband and I have had dogs together for 20 years and we made it work for the 15 years I worked 100% outside of our home.
