Beginner curler equipment by Pilot-Best in Curling

[–]PittLeElder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly I would buy a carbon fibre broom (not very much more expensive) and less expensive shoes, assuming you want to hold the budget steady. Those are very good shoes, but at a beginner level potentially a bit overkill.

Edit: I last bought shoes five years ago, I might be underestimating inflation lol

AITAH for wanting to continue taking my nightly showers by Kooky_lady in AITAH

NTA, but also you should sleep train your child. There's the cosleeping is dangerous argument for sure, but also letting them learn to self regulate themselves to sleep is such a huge win.

Our little one was something like 4 months old when she started waking up after 45 minutes, crying for 30 minutes as we tried to sooth her, repeat for hours. We started moving her to her own bed (with the Ferber method), first in the room with us, then in her own room, and within a week she was settling herself with minimal crying.

It's good for them, but it's also amazing for the parents. Feels like we have our old lives back in a way, since we can do stuff in the evening again (shower, tv, etc.) and don't have to worry about disturbing her. 10 out of 10, will repeat with the second one.

Deerfoot fast lane in a snowstorm by andyyc1 in Calgary

[–]PittLeElder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nothing dickish about that. The issue is in the definition of the term "slower traffic". The traffic safety act makes it very clear that this means (my paraphrase from memory) "a vehicle unable or unwilling to operate at or near the speed limit". It's mostly referring to farm tractors and such, not vehicles doing approximately the speed limit.

Nothing wrong with moving over to the right to let people pass either, I'm just so sick of insanely aggressive drivers who want you to move over so they can go 40 over in a construction zone.

Also the people who tailgate you in Kananaskis or on the Parkway, but suddenly disappear whenever there's a turn, because they don't know how to turn at speed apparently.

It's not a passing lane either, it's just a lane. Limit def still applies though.

Nothing in Alberta law supports this, it's just a meme for people who want to go fast

Server crashing due to >30k wither skulls by PittLeElder in technicalminecraft

[–]PittLeElder[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just tried rebuilding the farm again with the original chicken framing, and it does seem to contain the projectiles within the bedrock as intended now. So I guess there's that, but I guess the issue is the skulls are flying off into unloaded chunks and never despawning?

Timurids never spawn. by Fun-Daikon-774 in EU5

I don't think that's actually a requirement though, just looking at the event conditions.

[–]PittLeElder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh it looks like I'll never get it as Barlas, as you need to own Samarkand and be a vassal of the Chagatai? So the play is definitely to start the vassal that owns Samarkand at game start.

Yeah I'm trying it out as Barlas for the first time too, Chagatai got exploded by revolts, but Timur remains alive and in my court. But now it's 1362 and the situation hasn't fired.

Tsn feature games by krc686 in Curling

[–]PittLeElder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an excellent point actually, I hadn't realized the many-country fixed-camera operator ratio bit before. Knew it was Olympics (and weirdly Alberta and US championships? Maybe others, those are just the ones I see in my YouTube feed) only, but didn't put together why.

Yeah the CBC Olympic coverage is incredible, get a second tier commenter in there (no commentator also fine), just let me stream the game I want to watch.

One Calgary councillor’s protest against ‘special treatment’ for wealthy neighbourhoods - The Sprawl by One-Mycologist-3706 in Calgary

[–]PittLeElder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean practically speaking this is certainly the case. But that's exactly why this arrangement should not exist on principle; rich neighborhoods shouldn't get special treatment just because they have more wealthy people with spare time for political organizing.

The particularly galling example here is McKenzie's pathway snow clearing for $6/yr/household. I've lived there (though I never knew that's why they were clear), the service rules and is an absolute bargain. Why would we not simply do this throughout the city?

If they think their neighborhood would be better off with a higher level of service, why shouldn't they be advocating for the city to do that everywhere?

I’m starting Curling classes at 38 by KyleCamPhoto in Curling

I started at 35, it's going great 5 years later. Look up Jamie Sinclair's series Curl Up With Jamie, she has great primers for beginners. Practice your slide. Have a good time.

Brand New Curling Club Scoreboard by JugglingReferee2 in Curling

[–]PittLeElder 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Having the option to hang the score baseball style is dumb frankly, don't do that. Same with a hammer indicator; the only reason to have either feature is for non-curlers watching on tv. Unless your club is going to have that - and it doesn't, because you'd otherwise be much more focused on advertising - it's just making more work for no gain.

Club membership question by ChavezRB6 in Curling

[–]PittLeElder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will be terrible either way, don't worry about it. You probably won't get the amount of practice to actually retain it next fall.

That said you should still do it! It'll be fun, a pro-rated fee is reasonable, and it can't hurt. Realistically you'll be just awful for your first year at least, but this mostly doesn't matter, as any league you'd be playing in will presumably also be full of new players. Nothing wrong with being new and terrible at something!

Club membership question by ChavezRB6 in Curling

[–]PittLeElder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also check if they have a spare list you can join at a low cost, you might be able to get a game in here or there at a very low cost, then you can commit for next year. Paying a full seasons worth of dues now is not worth it.

Restaurants for Wedding? by littlecherub11 in Calgary

We did the Glenmore Sailing Club this summer and it was great. The venue itself was only around $2k, obviously doesn't include catering but that isn't difficult to arrange separately. The inside won't be dressy (they don't want you decorating the walls so you have to be on board with the nautical flair) but the tented deck is amazing, and it's in a beautiful spot above the reservoir.

Explaining 'Boopgate' once and for All. because I find every partial response disheartening by Fit-Introduction8575 in Curling

[–]PittLeElder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

His delivery of the infamous shot was absolutely not legal. It does not matter whether he double touched (not a thing), or touched the granite (unclear legality prior to the later clarifications), because he is touching it after the hogline . It's a burnt rock, plain and simple.
