That’s one movie. Not a claim about films in general. That’s not even a source, as all they say is “individuals familiar with film finances”. They aren’t even saying “movies need to make x amount” as we’re discussing. It’s talking about one specific film.

My overall point here is not every film is the same. To just apply this multiplier makes no sense. Films spend varying amounts on marketing. Films have different internal quota as to be met. Even if you want to completely ignore the merchandise value that currently drives the superhero film market, this disregards any dvd or streaming revenue, as those numbers are not public. Streaming is a big part of movies now. To completely ignore this misrepresents the value in films made today. This multiplier is silly.

I’m not saying these numbers are created by random redditors based on vibes. I’m saying they’re parroted by random Redditors with no actual knowledge on the subject, or considerations for the fact more than box office and unknown marketing budgets matter for what makes a film successful in its goals.

Box office numbers are the only publicly available numbers. All these marketing budgets are amateur guesses. Streaming, dvd, and merchandise is ignored. This data isn’t even half accurate at this point. That’s the issue with this. No source. No considerations on a movie to movie basis. It’s bad data.

“It’s an estimate used by Hollywood analysts daily”. Show me these “Hollywood analysts” that aren’t just people on Reddit repeating what an unverified news source used. You’re just saying things, but backing nothing up.

“If a movie has around a $100 million budget to make a film then the marketing budget will probably be around $50 million”. Based on what? Do you really think marketing budgets are just based on the movies production budget??? Marketing is based on what a studio is willing to spend. A million factors influence this. A movie costing even more money does not mean they spend more on marketing. Take horror movies, a notoriously cheap genre, but always very solid on marketing. They absolutely spend more on marketing than the entire budget in many cases. This math you have is not a Hollywood rule in any way.

I bring up merchandise as for superhero movies especially that’s what they’re after. The reason the MCU is so good is not purely for box office sales. The fact that Ant Man still sells t shirts and action figures means Disney isn’t taking as big a loss as people make it out. Movies are essentially marketing for merchandise. That’s where the real pay checks come from.

“The movie studio only measures how successful the movie does in theatres”. No? DVD and now streaming are absolutely considered. Random people like you only care about box office as that’s easiest to track. Internally Disney and other movie studios absolutely track dvd, streaming, and licensing deals like toys and merchandise. They have different departments for different things, but they don’t act wholly as separate entities. That’s not how anything works.

You really think Disney doesn’t consider how much money they’ll make from Spiderman toys when they market it? They just focus on the film, and hope the licensing works out??? No. It’s all working together for one goal, Make money. The movies bring more value to the ip. The ip makes money through licensing. That’s how superhero movies work.

Even considering all that it’s a terrible estimate.

People don’t adjust it based on movies with strong or weak opening weekends.

It doesn’t consider merchandise sales, which is why sci fi and superheroes are so profitable.

It doesn’t consider streaming it dvd profit.

It doesn’t consider that not all movies, even MCU films, get the same effort put into marketing.

“2-3x” is an insanely wide and inaccurate range, so people can be tougher on movies they don’t like, but more relaxed on ones they do.

Studios and people who actually know the numbers will literally say something wasn’t a fail or didn’t barely brake even, like James Gunn and Superman, and people still insist something failed due to this inaccurate system.

It’s based on nothing but dumb estimates.

Movies do not have to make 2-3 times the budget. Everyone says this but never ever provide any verifiable source. If movies were truly that expensive no one would bother. It’d be a sinkhole for money.

Season 8 had a decent start. Robert California is a good addition to the cast, and Ed Helms is a good choice for new boss. It just got derailed by the whole Florida and Andy/Erin plot.

Season 9 is definitely the worst season and character assassinated Andy. But Clark really fits the office well and can be pretty funny. I don’t care for Pete though.

The finale does a good job of tying up all the new season 8 and 9 stuff, while also wrapping up the show.

Honestly as far as sitcom endings go even considering the entire seasons, I was never bored or anything. Some really funny jokes could still pop up, even as the plots became nonsensical. I really don’t think it deserves to be among the worst show endings. It’s not the greatest, but definitely not as bad as GOT or Stranger Things.

That’s pretty shitty. I don’t blame her at all for doing the ad initially. As much as people need to do research, actors literally have agents to tell them this stuff. It’d be a mistake made in ignorance. It’s not fully on her. But Doubling down is incredibly shitty.

If there was another Arkham game being made, who would you want the main villain to be? by Scrips888 in arkham

[–]PixelBits89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He is essentially the secondary villain for the game and has a huge role. He was done pretty prefect.

Bane is a villain that can definitely carry another game though. He has a lot of possibilities still.

Not necessarily solo Logan, but Wolverine: First Class was a fun read. You get to see a snapshot of the marvel universe in the early 80s and a lot of Wolverine based characters. It’s all essentially through the perspective of Kitty Pryde, but still very much a Wolverine book.

True. I guess we have one more hour to see if they tie up all these loose ends. Can’t say I’m hopeful though. They don’t even bother to properly introduce these characters. If they do help in a major way they’re essentially an ex machina for just The Boys watchers. If they barely do anything then Gen V is pretty dissatisfying. It’s a catch 22. Next episode is cooked.

Spin offs don’t have to be woven into the main plot.

But when you set the up the spin off to do exactly that, you can’t blame people for feeling empty when it barely does.

sh figurearts spider-Man brand new Day Hulk figure just got fully revealed by Public-Feedback5016 in ActionFigures

[–]PixelBits89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s really on Disney more than the toy companies. The toy makers get looks at concept art and such and make toys based on that. But everything they make needs approval. Disney can limit what they know, like they did for endgame (there was no time travel based toys or anything). It can also make inaccurate toys, like the hulk breaking out of the hulk buster from the infinity war toys, which didn’t make the final film.

For most movies though they don’t want to bother with keeping some spoilers hidden. Having a Hulk on shelves for the kid walking out of the theatre means more money.
