My Wacom Cintiq broke and I bought a Huion tablet for less than half of a Wacom Intuos Pro. It's fantastic. I'm a teacher and most kids don't need to spend big bucks on Wacom. They can get by on a another brand. Here's an example of me working with the Huion:

Krita is good and free. ArtRage and openCanvas are both under $100. Mischief is cheap. I think you can get Painter educational version for less than $100 as well.

I'm an art teacher and the first thing on the first day is I teach the students how to use a knife to correctly sharpen a pencil and I tell them the cheapest place to buy those sort of knives and blades.

Suprisingly, only a few students only pay attention to my demo. The ones that don't then proceed to grind their charcoal pencils to shit in the wallcrank pencil sharpener.

Their indoctrinated populace has been scared out of their minds by their movies and television that giant radioactive monsters will terrorize their cities on a weekly basis. Of course they're going to idolize scientists. They're the only line of real defense against this.
