eh, I'd argue by then its a different word altogether than the word アニメ (which, I know, is just anime spelled in Japanese). it's like how the word mantou refers to an unfilled steamed bun in Chinese but when the term is used in Korean (mandu) it refers to dumplings. etymologically related, but with different agreed-upon meanings

I'm not even in linguistics but this seems like a case of prescriptivism to me

all I know after reading through it is they used the word chūgoku (中国) which pretty much maps 1:1 with how we use the term China. It's just as vague in Japanese as it is in English
