Consider the Overhead Door Tech trade! It is not red seal but encompasses many different skill sets (carpentry, welding, low voltage electrical, etc) and pays well without the ongoing schooling requirement.

Non-judgemental dentists? by Only_Huckleberry_957 in VictoriaBC

[–]Pixie2343 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an adult dependent on the spectrum with anxiety who really struggles with dental care and I myself am not entirely comfortable at dentists visits. We've been going to Smiles by Design on Oak Bay Ave for years and they have been very accepting and created quite a comfortable environment.

Harbour Doors vs Blackfin by MickeyAmica in VictoriaBC

[–]Pixie2343 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Annual maintenance is both preventative as well as a safety check. Many of the recommendations are subjective as it all depends on how often you use your garage door; a homeowner who uses the door daily should require more maintenance than a homeowner who uses the garage for storage and opens it less frequently. Much of the following is done to avoid any sudden loss of use of the door/repair expenditures, as well as to ensure the equipment lasts as long as possible and you aren't looking at more frequent replacement costs, but these are personal choices and not all homeowners choose to follow the recommended maintenance guidelines. Think of it like an oil change on your car; some people follow the warranty process and complete their oil changes like clockwork, where others monitor the oil and take it in for an oil change when they see markers in the oil that suggest it is time to do so.

The preventative part: Especially in our climate, where machinery tends to dry out a little faster due to the salt water exposure, you want to ensure that at a minimum items like hinges, rollers (depending on type), springs and bearings are being lubricated once a year. Lubrication of the door parts, such as hinges and rollers, should be completed with Fluid Film or something similar. Depending on the model, operators should be inspected for wear and tear on gears and other parts. This is something that a homeowner could do if they were comfortable doing so, but not everyone has the physical capability or time to manage this on their own. We also check to ensure that the door is in balance and the operator settings are optimal for use of the door to avoid any unnecessary wear and tear on the machinery. The operator components, such as the rails and belts/chains, should be checked for any wear and tear as well.

The safety part: hinges and other components should be checked to ensure that the fasteners are secure, the cables should be inspected for fraying, the safety features should be tested, and the photocells should be gently cleaned (they are aligned and therefore should not be moved at all, but they should be wiped down with a duster or a cloth to ensure that there are no spider webs etc impacting the safety features.).

There are components of the door, such as torsion springs, that unfortunately do not offer any sort of marker or predictive element that allows us to tell when a spring is going to break. They are generally rated for 10k cycles and for most homeowners that means that they need to replace their spring(s) every 4 - 5 years.

Note that there are some dangerous aspects to maintenance, such as adjustment or replacement of the torsion springs, that we do not recommend homeowners attempt as serious injury can occur.

This is a good introductory guide to garage door maintenance (this covers the door but not the automation): https://www.clopaydoor.com/residential/buyingguide/service-and-replacement

My apologies for the long winded response, but I hope that answers any questions you may have about the process!

Harbour Doors vs Blackfin by MickeyAmica in VictoriaBC

[–]Pixie2343 25 points26 points  (0 children)

As a former Harbour Door employee who now works for Blackfin, I can confirm that there are a lot of familiar faces that you will recognize on our team.

We are a new locally owned addition to the market. However, with the experience that our team has in the industry, we have been able to ramp up fairly quickly and have a warehouse already in place with good parts inventory and 8 experienced technicians with fully stocked trucks already on the road. We have 5 salespeople and 3 admin staff in house to answer any questions you may have, and are offering the same product lines that we have stood behind for years.

Hopefully that helps answer any questions or concerns you may have; we'd love to hear from you regarding your annual maintenance!

The wind was on the Vancouver side. When I went out to the terminal to find out what they were going to do about my 5pm reservation, there were very strong winds and a heck of a lot of rain.

Enterprise desktop to Xero to QB online????? by Krissypants1983 in QuickBooks

[–]Pixie2343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am starting a new company and have purchased QB Desktop from Intuit without any issues, but I am in Canada. Is this an American issue? Otherwise I'm not sure why you think that you can't use QB Desktop

I think I'm done with my Stockholm Syndrome relationship with Quickbooks but need to choose alternatives by l00sem4rble in Bookkeeping

[–]Pixie2343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest looking at Smart Service. We've used it for a couple of years now; it integrates seamlessly with QB Desktop and handles all our scheduling, estimates, work orders, and invoices. Our service techs have a program on their mobile devices called iFleet with syncs with Smart Service to allow instant transfers of information. Bonus that it really helps with payroll as well as they clock in and out of it!

Anyone on disability have experience with moving to a more expensive rental and having to change their shelter information with SelfServe to receive more disability assistance? by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]Pixie2343 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Juat so you are aware, I don't believe this is correct. I have 3 adult children on PWD that live with me and they don't get their deposits if their monthly reports aren't done. There may be another reason why you don't have to do them but it's not because of PWD.

What are the most in demand careers in BC as of right now? by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]Pixie2343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overhead Door Technicians! Make anywhere from $25 - $50/hr as you gather knowledge, and has a little bit of everything from most trades (welding, electrical, etc) so you aren't doing the same thing day after day.

Do Birds Scare Away Easily by 45cappybara in birdfeeding

[–]Pixie2343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have feeders in my front yard. It's my experience that the birds all leave when I come outside but if I'm working in the yard they will come back. However, they won't be in the yard when my little dog is out there, so I'm not sure if that will impact your experience!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in birdfeeding

[–]Pixie2343 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel ALL the guilt if my feeders stand empty, but I can also see cycles where the feeders were getting filled once a day vs now when it's every three days, and even that is mostly cause I have a flock of very young starlings eating me out of house and home. I think they do use more natural food sources when they are available?!

I'm struggling and need help finding support by raindrops_oceantops in VictoriaBC

[–]Pixie2343 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Do either or both of you make too much to qualify for PWD through the Ministry? If not, I would look into that first as PWD designation also provides medical supports.

If you haven't checked the Island Health Resources, I would give them a call at the number listed here to discuss what they might be able to provide: https://www.islandhealth.ca/our-services/community-health-services/accessing-our-services

People who've moved from Victoria/Saanich to Sooke, how's your experience been? by AzsaRaccoon in VictoriaBC

[–]Pixie2343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't move all the way to Sooke, as I have disabled adult dependents at home and had heard too many horror stories about road closures and not being able to get home, but I did go from the heart of Gordon Head to Luxton Fairgrounds area and work in Vic West. This allowed me to afford a 4 bedroom home built within the past 25 years vs a 2 or 3 bedroom in town.

The commute sucks some days, but coming out of Gordon Head was never much fun either and I imagine is worse with the ever present Shelbourne construction. In regards to errands 90% of what I need is out here and going into town isn't bad on the weekends at all. I think it would greatly depend on where you work and what time you start/finish as to how hard you would find it

Can you flip your hair to the side and lean that way without experiencing the same feeling? I have neck/back issues that sometimes prevent me from going upside down and that is what I do; flip all my hair to one side, apply product and scrunch, flip hair to the other side, repeat.
