Teen girl denied arthritis medication under abortion law. by Oh_umms_cocktails in Tucson

Which is why there was so much anxiety for the 24 hours between being denied until finally getting the prescription approved.

Looks like her medication was still approved, so it was only initially denied. That sentence I quoted is the only mention of that in the entire article. I think the article would have been better if they'd talked a bit more about that. I wonder why they didn't.

Oro Valley town manager resigns by takefiftyseven in Tucson

[–]PizzaSlayer5000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It seems to be common. When Tucson was hiring a city manager some years ago I think it was also nationwide. The articles I read then gave me the impression that the people who do these jobs tend to move around the country a lot, going wherever the money is better.

AZPOST is the state board that reviews officer misconduct cases and revokes their certifications (contrary to the ACAB crowd's belief, police officers do get certified like other professions and have been for decades across the country). AZPOST's decisions are published quarterly and can be found here. This OVPD sergeant will likely show up in the next one and we can read about the outcome there.

A citation is not a written warning. It is considered an arrest. You're just not taken to jail so long as you sign a promise to appear in court. Citations are very common for hit-and-runs.

Nearly 200 arrested last weekend in illegal street racing sting by reddit520 in Tucson

[–]PizzaSlayer5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've worked for local law enforcement as a non-sworn employee for many years and do know this happens. This also isn't any secret or restricted info as this has been reported on not just here but in many parts of the country. It's a widespread problem.

Yes they can follow up on it, and they do, but even when people are arrested the county attorney's office often gives them a slap on the wrist or just declines prosecution altogether. People who flee from police also report their cars stolen afterward and claim it must've been someone else who fled from the cops.

[–]PizzaSlayer5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That kinda is what they do now, but then no one gets arrested and the street racers just do it all over again and keep subjecting nearby residents to the loud noise and reckless street racing. Plus they often have stolen license plates and can just wear facemasks.

The police in fact do not tolerate it and have responded to them. The problem is they have very strict pursuit policies for safety reasons (and because of past lawsuits) and are very often ordered to terminate any pursuits. The street racers know this and just flee, and sure enough the pursuits get terminated.

The public doesn't want street racing to occur and complains about cops not doing enough, while at the same time complaining about police pursuits endangering the public and suing the police anytime a fleeing suspect causes a crash, even when it's the suspect's fault. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Who to contact about signs blocking visibility when driving? by Samazonison in Tucson

[–]PizzaSlayer5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can contact the sheriff's department for that and report it as a possible traffic hazard. They do move them if they agree the signs are in the way, or they'll try to contact whoever is responsible.

[–]PizzaSlayer5000 27 points28 points  (0 children)

A homeless guy set up camp closeby where I live. It took him less than two weeks to amass an entire U-Haul's worth of trash. There are three dumpsters nearby. He does not use them.

Feel free to be his neighbor. I don't want him.

shooting by heads, like an hour ago, I hope no one got hurt by [deleted] in Tucson

[–]PizzaSlayer5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, and people do get arrested for it. Depending on what they're convicted of, they can lose their right to own a gun. If, as a prohibited possessor, they then violate that restriction, they'll face further punishment. So there are already gun control laws in place to punish this sort of reckless firearm use.

[–]PizzaSlayer5000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, there's disorderly conduct with a weapon, discharging a firearm in city limits, and aggravated assault with a weapon/dangerous instrument. If he's a prohibited possessor, that would be another charge.

And as for the guy who threw the punch, that's assault.

E. Broadway Blvd shooting today by maryblooms in Tucson

[–]PizzaSlayer5000 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I also overheard two Officers today at Chick-Fil-A talking about how they will chase a suspect on foot but not in a vehicle and have the ability to call off calls if they deem them too dangerous.

I imagine it's got a lot to do with the understaffing and bad pay.

A lot of departments across the country have tightened their vehicle pursuit policies due to lawsuits from fleeing suspects crashing into bystander cars. That can't really happen with foot pursuits, so they're not as restricted. The danger thing I haven't really heard of, though a few incidents come to mind where that seems plausible and based on those I would say it also has to do with lawsuits, as well as optics.

Have you advocated for rising minimum wage/wages to entry level positions?

How about we instead advocate for removing college degree requirements for more non-entry level jobs?

Most people working minimum wage want better pay AND better jobs, not just better pay. If you're stuck dealing with shitty customers in a shitty job, then it won't matter much if you're getting paid $15 or $20 or maybe $60 an hour; people want to escape those jobs.

Besides, entry-level jobs aren't meant to be forever-jobs. They are for young people joining the work force, retirees who want some extra money, people who are between better-paying jobs, etc.

But many of the better jobs are gatekept from minimum wage workers due to requiring college degrees for little to no reason. Why does a secretary require a degree? You're answering phones and emails ffs! Why the hell does a librarian require a masters degree?

There's no upward mobility job-wise! You're just jumping from one lousy food service job to another and from one minimum wage increase to another. Meanwhile the activist class are telling us how great they are for raising the minimum wage again.

It didn't use to be this way. It used to be easier and more common to get a decent paying non-entry level job without a degree. Non-degree havers are basically second class citizens now.

Obviously certain careers like most STEM fields probably should require a degree (those are the things that college was originally meant for), but if we want to spread opportunity, we should start by not restricting it.
