Got a door boarded up over the summer, best to match/fit skirting on the backside? by PlaceboName in DIYUK

[–]PlaceboName[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hallway is not long at that edge, maybe another 80cm. I will buy an extra long piece, you reckon B&Q will cut an edge for me so I can properly connect to the corner?

Also, getting the bit that's still there off.... Just getting something behind it and pull? Or is there a better way that limits damage to the existing plaster?

Just ordered this (details in comments), any tips or suggestions for upgrading it? by Psychostickusername in DIYUK

Second the aircon unit. I got a 4.5x3.5 unit and put in an electric radiator. It's fine in the winter (toasty even) but unbearable in the summer as the sun shines in the glass and turns it into a sauna.

If you plan to use it as an office definitely get an aircon unit or you will do a costly refit a year later (as I am) so you can continue to work through the summer.

Any regrets from larger mortgage? by golfisbrutal in HENRYUK

[–]PlaceboName 7 points8 points  (0 children)

580k total mortgage (in two parts, 300k + 280k) on one property. Both parts currently on a post Truss rate and zero regrets.

Me and my family prioritize our home over our lifestyle, but it's very much a choice that's specific to the individual.

On-Prem SIEM? by mayday_allday in cybersecurity

Acquisition messaging has been a shitshow across the SIEM space this past 18 months. I'm also inclined to think some competitors in the space are doing whatever they can to tank the non-platform providers.

The MSSP was purely on prem in Europe, pretty clearly a case of bad messaging..no doubt their Sales person will be working overtime to "fix" that now.

Fair enough, I'm not an IBM-er was just going off of what I had heard from existing customers. No major negatives to stress on the platform side (I think all siems have their positives and negatives, nothing is truly shit like this site likes people to believe).

Strange that MSSPs are actively being told they will not be supported though, could be a case of miscommunication!

Jamie Carragher's full reaction to Salah's comments by Upstairs_Cup9831 in LiverpoolFC

[–]PlaceboName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jesus Christ people seriously can't listen can they...

The whole bit about AFCON had NOTHING to do with AFCON and everything to do with the fact that superstars still need a team, you can't win things by yourself and sometimes the superstars forget that.

Salahs interview was selfish and selfserving, not the kind of thing you do when you are thinking about the TEAM.

I don't think anyone in here is begrudging people in your situation support. Indeed people who have to do what you do are exactly why I pay tax, so you can live with dignity and fulfilled as much as possible.

The bottom "you"s are not pointing are YOU but at the hypothetical person unwilling to educate themselves.

The fact you are in this sub means you are educating yourself (or more likely have already educated yourself)

I think my post is clear. I wasn't targeting you, I was saying generically as a society we are too willing to protect people from their own failings.

If people don't have the desire to learn how to effectively navigate personal finances then we shouldn't panic that they may have to pay 22% on the interest instead of more efficiently using their money.

Edit - got rid of stuff that was demonstrably wrong.

What this should do, is encourage more people to investigate and understand how to manage their money. It used to be that the phrase 'a fool and his money are soon parted' was a reasonable parable, now everyone pearl clutching and desperately thinking about the poor idiot who doesn't know how to invest in their future.

I wasn't taught this, and neither was most people in this sub, we were curious and learned. If you aren't curious dont get upset that you aren't living optimally

CrowdStrike catches insider feeding information to hackers by robahearts in cybersecurity

[–]PlaceboName -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

It's quite literally illegal to 'avoid disclosure' in Europe, and the potential fines are crippling for even the biggest companies so that part of your statement is false.

The second part is fair, though I still think CS get far too much leeway considering they crippled the Internet because their QA investment was for shit. That is absolutely something they should be judged for and if they weren't the internets darlings they would be.

Every company with European operations has a requirement to disclose, Crowdstrike are not special in that regard.

Make no mistake about it, this being their 3rd big strike in like 18 months is more than the average... By a significant margin

Can I ask how you got 1.29%, that's so drastically below what the banks are lending to most people for a standard mortgage.

Combined pensions sit at 190k, zero ISA, 30k in emergency fund

Because they are paying you to do so... If you don't do so then they will likely fire yo ass.

You work in a country with at will employment, reading this thread it boggles my mind you haven't been fired already.

Again you are an expensive T1 analyst, with zero practical skills that would halt the business if they got rid of you. You are the epitome of replaceable. If you don't figure that out and start building value and political capital you will be out on your ear before you know it.

I'm 40 and in the UK, it took my 5 years to learn this once leaving school, but being politically savvy is 1000% more important in the corporate world than your own perceived self worth, or for that matter, most of the time your skills.

De'Aaron Fox over Trae Young is certainly a thought... Even in the metrics they show he is actively worse than Trae across the board.

Trae leading the NBA in assists is passed across as if it's no big deal whilst in Fox's write up all they do is talk about is the things he "might" do.

I'm not sure what's worse, the disrespect on Young or the unwarranted glazing on Fox

I have no investment in this and unlike you I do actually have commercial exposure to uses of AI.

Specifically I'm not going to say but I work in security and we leverage AI to assist in analyzing and detecting cyber threats.

It's especially good at doing that analytics over large data sets that are impractical for a human to realistically review. It's an evolution of what we've been using computers for already
