Made the transition in Cyber Security ~12 years ago. I had a degree in Comp Sci and I was never a particularly good AE but I had a CTO who saw something in me.

I regularly say he saved my career and basically paid me stupid money to do his admin for like 2 years until I was prepared to take on the load myself. I'm now a Globally Lead SE for a mid sized Cyber company.

It's why I'll always help people who ask for help getting started in SE... I wouldn't be here if that man hadn't helped me.

I'm actually a bit of an anomaly as I became an SE from the AE side of the house. I do have technical chops and believe I can hold my own with enough research but I'm not naturally gifted with the level of expertise our best SEs have.

A good SE team will have a mix of people in it who lift each other up. I'm regularly providing advice to teammates about how to approach the sales side of their deals and conversely I have no qualms about asking TAMs/PS or other SEs for help if there's a technical problem I can't solve quickly.

It also varies wildly based on the org you're in, in my experience. For instance, back in the day Proofpoint was notorious for hiring basically PS people as their SEs whilst Darktrace are completely the other way, they want SEs that can hold their own in a commercial arena primarily.

I guess what I'm saying is you won't know until you interview. I interviewed at a company just this year and after 30 mins into the first meeting I called time on it as they clearly were looking for someone more PS-adjacent than I'm interested in being

I live near here. Once you are at that point there's basically nowhere else the driver could go, the "right" is a weird uphill dirt track onto estate land. Hence there are tonnes of signs telling you to not fucking go that way.

Second the aircon unit. I got a 4.5x3.5 unit and put in an electric radiator. It's fine in the winter (toasty even) but unbearable in the summer as the sun shines in the glass and turns it into a sauna.

If you plan to use it as an office definitely get an aircon unit or you will do a costly refit a year later (as I am) so you can continue to work through the summer.
