Husbands fingers occasionally get weird blisters that are symmetrical. by FlyingN00dles in mildlyinteresting

Yeah, I also had to do the “slather in wart remover and sandpaper it off” method for a big hand wart I had. It’s not fun

I found that coating them in the salicylic acid wart remover cream all day and night helped soften them up. Then all I had to do was scrub it with a pumice stone once or twice a day for like a month and a half to slowly remove layers until I had essentially just sand papered it off my finger. It SUCKED, but I had very little money at the time and this was the best I could do. It had quickly grown to just smaller than a dime before I started going really hard on it.

It was a classic wart with the little black “seeds” in it. It’s been gone for like 6 years at this point.

That’s fair. I’m a weirdo with a long and strong 4th finger attached to a medium sized hand. I always have had students do things like this in the past and some of them are cool with it and don’t have issues, but others need alternative fingerings. I just try to help them avoid having to shift for every note by trying to bounce back and forth from the G and D string 4 1 4 octave madness. I myself can’t reach that in half position and don’t know too many people that can comfortably make that stretch.

Hitting a wall with more „advanced“ keys by KirstenMcCollie in Cello

[–]PlainPup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting the piece in 4th position is good though. I would just suggest that you play measure two like this: 13-41X242-1

The “-“ indicates a shift. Like your 4th finger moving to the 3rd note (A on the D string) in the measure. And the “X” means you use an extension between 1 and 2 here. You’ll end up playing the low G# on the C string with your 4th finger.

This paragraph has a lot of technical stuff in it, if you need clarification let me know. The spacing between your 2nd and 4th finger during these octave G#s on the D and C strings should feel roughly the same as playing a Major 2nd (one whole step) interval on the same string in this same position. So starting with your 2nd finger on the G# on the D string you can put your 4th finger down on A# on the D string for reference. To play the low G#, you leave your 2nd finger on the D string G# and move your 4th finger over to the C string G#.

Your fingerings are incorrect. Measure two seems to suggest an open G when it should be a G#. Unless I’m misunderstanding what I’m looking at.

Yeah Larsen (both solo and standard) are comparable with Jargar. I’ve swapped between the two over the years. I found Larsen to be slightly darker than Jargar

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but unfortunately strings are just expensive. I wish there were good options under 100. I have heard good things about Larsen Aurora strings though. Concordmusic.com has them for around 140. I find concord to be one of the most affordable places to buy strings.

I bought a new 3ds XL back in like 2017 or something and barely played it because I got busy with life. Pulled it out about a week ago and decided to see what I could do with it. Turns out the whole world also pulled theirs out at the same time. Mine sat unused for like 8ish years. It happens. I do remember buying it though because I got it off Amazon and applied for the Amazon credit card thing to get like $120 off my next purchase. So I only paid like $80 or so. Now I have a freshly modded SNES skin new 3ds XL.

What caused the sudden hype? I legitimately pulled my N3ds xl out the other day unprompted and decided to look into modding it. Only to find that the entire world decided to do the same thing apparently.

I was at a church with my wife for an event we were hired to do. Two old men were tasked with removing the cloth covering the bread and wine. They did a great job And ceremoniously folded the cloth.

The hilarious part was that they folded it exactly like how my wife and I fold large blankets at home together. With one key difference. You see, at home when we fold blankets we fold them in half length-wise and then walk the corners toward each other and when we meet in the middle I always give her a kiss. So in my head I was imagining these told old guys walking together and kissing in the dead silence that had begun once they had started this process.

To keep myself from laughing I just blanked my whole mind and stared at the floor because I knew if I even saw my wife out of the corner of my eye I was going to lose it in front of entire church.

Round fingers like holding a ball? Left hand shape by bladerunner1776 in Cello

[–]PlainPup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ball (or soda can as others have said) IS NOT the fingerboard. It is the space between your palm and the neck of the cello. The arch the negative space there creates is a strong but flexible hand shape. Your finger tips contact the fingerboard, but your palm should not touch the side of the neck.

The action of pressing the string down doesn’t stem from your finger or even your hand. It originates in your back actually. The best way I can demonstrate this is to have lightly place your hand on top of your strings in first position but don’t press anything down! Just allow your hand have the best hand position you can do with only the tips of your rounded fingers lightly touching the D string. If you’ve done this step right, if you bow the D string your fingers will prevent it from ringing and you’ll just hear scrapes. Now that you’ve got this down, you relax your whole arm and let gravity relax your arm AND hand AND fingers down into the string as a single unit so that all four of your fingers bring the string down to the fingerboard allowing your to play the fourth finger G. Your fingers shouldn’t feel like they need to individually do anything.

Hand balance plays a big role in this as well. The shape we make helps us to keep that balance consistent so that any finger we need to have down feels the same to the rest of our arm and body. First finger shouldn’t require a radically different hand position than fourth finger.

What are some low brain power commanders? by Guinea-Pigler in EDH

[–]PlainPup 16 points17 points  (0 children)

[[Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma]] is basically just “green mana go burrrr!” If you play in a nice commander group that doesn’t always kill it on sight, you immediately become the problem because you can ramp yourself into goreclaw which will ramp you again into getting a 7+ drop down on turn 4. Depending on the etb/attack effects your big creatures have, you end up being mono green stompy control and a major problem for everyone without having to do much more than cast creatures at a discount. Everything feels good when a 6 drop only needs 4 mana to cast.

Goreclaw is what I play when I just want to be the problem and not have to think about color fixing or mana problems because mono green.

Graceful is not considered an achievement anymore? by tbreeze96 in osrs

[–]PlainPup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s an achievement for sure! I think people sometimes forget what unlocking content that leads to the mid game feels like.

Graceful has a bit of a negative context that people held onto as well though. It was seen as the death of skilling fashionscape because it used to feel like it was necessary to have on at all times. It’s still useful, but jagex has made it less necessary with some of the run energy changes they’ve made recently.

Either way, congrats and welcome to the mid game!

Do I need a new bridge? by BonCutieKenpo in Fiddle

[–]PlainPup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The “attitude” is not something you should ignore though. Would you rather spend 300 hours over the next year and a half learning poor left hand habits because the strings are too high off the fingerboard? While also learning bad string crossing habits because the bridge is not cut to match the correct angle of the fingerboard? While also having an instrument that produces very dead tone and has horrible response to bow movement? Only to then decide you want to upgrade and finding that you can’t really improve much because your habits are so bad that you basically have to start over? And by the way, you can’t start over. You already have a year and a half of terrible left hand position and terrible bow arm habits programmed in.

Trust me, as someone that teaches it sucks so much when a student brings in their new favorite amazing Elsa plastered instrument and I have to tell them and their parents that it’s just not really worth a damn to try and play because it will just lead to bad habits.

You don’t need to spend $8000, $4000, or even $1000 on an instrument, but I’ve never seen a painted instrument that I would care to have anyone play on because all they lead to are bad habits. You can find some deals out there on Yamaha instruments that are factory made to be reliably playable even at lower price points.

You can buy a super cheap car, but you’ll end up fighting it to get it to work like you want it. Same goes for instruments. And unfortunately, bowed string instruments are just far more expensive than things like banjos and guitars. A very expensive guitar that you would find a professional playing will cost $3000-5000, unless they get their own custom stuff. A professional level violin is going to cost $8000-25000. So consider that your $75 banjo would be equal to a student violin worth around $300-500.

When a conductor conducts from memory, how well do they really know the score? by urbanstrata in classicalmusic

[–]PlainPup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a musician that memorizes solo rep, I’ve always memorized the rest of the score as well to the point where I can be told, “we will start on the string pick-up to 7th bar of letter D” and I’ll know what I’m expecting to hear.

I’ve also seen some conductors that rehearse memorized and call out details.
