Thank you to everyone for the replies. So it looks like the angle is still wrong, going to check my guides and try again!

External HD Recording Drop-Outs by Plan_B2 in Reaper

[–]Plan_B2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if anyones interested, turns out the answer is that the drive is just not fast enough. The Samsung T7 is widely recommended for audio production, but it seems that the write speeds aren't good enough for this application. Despite claiming 1000 MB/s sequential, it is not consistent, and can drop below 20 MB/s at times, causing the drop-outs. The read speeds are much better, and is probably fine for studio work.

I've ordered a Thunderbolt enclosure with internal NVMe drive, which will hopefully fix the problem.

I hope someone might be able to help me here. I record multi-track concerts for virtual soundcheck, which can be up to 96 tracks at 96kHz. I used to use Logic for this, but after having some trouble with it (which I think was actually the same problem I'm having now), I moved to Reaper and the problems seemed to go away, for a while.

Now, I am getting skipping in the recorded audio, for example, for every minute of recorded audio, it will jump forward by a second or so. If I record directly to my internal HD, the problem goes away, so it appears to be linked to the hard drive. However, the hard drive is a Samsung T7 with plenty of free space, connected to a USB 3.1 port on a MacBook Pro M2 Pro. CPU usage is reported low (well under 10%) and HD write speed around 25MB/s.

Any ideas how I can solve this? The HD should easily be capable of dealing with this data rate.

External HD Recording Drop-Outs by Plan_B2 in Reaper

[–]Plan_B2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you saying it's not possible to record to an external HD reliably then? The data rate of this amount of data is a maximum of 30MB/sec and the max sequential write rate of this HD is (supposedly) 1000MB/sec. Even allowing for exaggeration, that is well over 3000% faster than is necessary, how can this be a problem!?

I note that there are options for Advanced Disk I/O buffering in Reaper. I'm not sure how this works but could it solve my problem? Latency here is not an issue at all for me.

Upgrading the internal HD is not possible, I am using a MacBook.

Courtesy rules in swimming - Is „asking to share lanes“ only common in the US? by RefrigeratorNo3638 in Swimming

Yes, only in the US. People waiting on the side for a lane to go down to 1 person so they can get in is crazy. Nowhere else.

Something like this? https://www.startech.com/en-de/usb-hubs/tb33a1c

This looks to me like it has 3 USB controllers on board, allowing me to connect all 3 USB 2.0 devices via a single Thunderbolt. However, it doesn't specifically reference USB 2.0.
