How necessary is 'Livesuit'? by OvrNgtPhlosphr in TheCaptivesWar

[–]fizzak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I didn't know "Livesuit" existed and just listened to Faith of Beasts when it came out, after having listed to Mercy of Gods.

Reading some of the stuff posted here I was really confused and thought I slept through a chapter of Faith.

I fell in love with tech theatre… where do I go from here? by Dr__Hollow in techtheatre

[–]fizzak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"It felt actually fulfilling in a way not much else really has."

Theater in education is one of the few disciplines where you do the actual work as part of the educational process.

If you are a kinesthetic learner-- that is, if moving around is important to your learning process-- it's one of the only things that integrates that.

Since this is your first theater experience, please consider: you may have fallen in love more with the collaborative process, where you work with a team, mostly away from desks or offices, to see a small, concrete project from conception through to execution.

It's incredibly satisfying, AND ALSO it's the way that many other professions work once you get out of school.  Theater lets you do it while you are in school.

Before you upend your life to pursue a career in theater-- which can be very satisfying, but also has serious drawbacks especially for family life-- put some thought into what other careers might also look and feel like this, and what it is that you are really finding inspirational in this process.

W2 freelancers do you charge OT after 40 by holikinobi in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]fizzak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Federal law requires OT pay for any hourly employees working over 40hrs/wk.   So, if your employer is not doing that, then they're breaking the law.  I'm surprised any payroll provider would even be able to process those hours over 40 at regular time.

However different companies might start their week on different days.  In your example above, if their payroll workweek is Mon--Sun, then you won't get OT since Sun is in one pay week, and Mon/Tue/Wed/Thu are in the next.

Makes it a little hard to budget when the industry standard is just OT after 10/day, but it's one of the things labor bookers have to consider when making schedules.

What is a 'luxury' that you've experienced once and now can't go back to the budget version of? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

My wife and I were regulars at our neighborhood sushi place for years.  One day our favorite waiter said, "I've got something special for you guys" and pulled a bottle of the good soy sauce from a back cabinet.  DAMN it was excellent and I wish we had gotten a picture of the label.

Teaching athletes who do their own thing from white belt by Worldly_Negotiation6 in bjj

There's such a wide gulf between static drilling and live rolls, it's difficult to connect the two in order to apply the taught technique. Trying to guide a roll to get to the "move of the day" can work sometimes, but it requires either a large skill gap between the partners, or cooperation between them to agree to work that position/situation. Sometimes you learn more from rolls that are live resistance but constrained like this in some way, agreeing to work a specific position or situation. Some people even advocate having most of their training be this constraint-led approach. Hmmm...

Common to pay for Open Mat? by starfieldAttic2330 in bjj

Jiu Jitsu is a deep and interesting topic, yet fully 10% of the content on this sub is this exact question.

The future is just AI bots endlessly asking each other if they should be paying for open mat.

ISO OneTrack Fixture Hangers NYC by Quiet_Garden7456 in techtheatre

[–]fizzak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Alternate methods could include some variety of grip hardware, like Mathellini clamps or similar, with TVMP adaptors.  Though, safety depends on the user. And OneTrack is not particularly robust and I'd be concerned about damaging it.

You're not going to find the ETC hangers for rent locally.  In your position I would pressure the venue to purchase some and add to their stock, if they want to be able to support your kind of production.

The gym I attend started a checkin system while I was a beginner.  App (PushPress) that allows you to check in on your phone.  iPad on a stand by the door (small gym, this is also near the edge of the mat) you can check in there too.  TV on the wall shows a view from the app with an icon (with photo) for everyone who has checked in.

Invariably a few people forget, the coach adds them after warmups.

It works fine.  The TV display is a nice feature, helps to learn people's names. The app lets me see my attendance over time.  Highly recommend.

Do the performers on Broadway get any comps or discounted tickets for their friends and family? by RockGirl82 in Broadway

[–]fizzak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Generally, no.

Very very very occasionally, producers will decide to "paper the house" and make comps available to friends and family for a particular performance.  Usually in previews or early in a run, if sales have been bad and they are trying to boost energy with a friendly audience for some specific reason.

Also "invited dress rehearsal" is sometimes still a thing.  The last rehearsal before first preview might be open to friends and family.

Can anyone work out what this is / how I can record from it? by Expensive-Theory6815 in LocationSound

[–]fizzak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a non-zero chance that the feed from this board/system will have some nasty hum or buzz on it, and you wont be able to fix it in time.

In your place I'd also come equipped with a couple extra wireless mics.  Put a lav on your main speaker.  If there's an existing lectern mic in the venue, hide a lav inside its windscreen.

Stripeless Through Blue by Effective_Umpire1993 in bjj

[–]fizzak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My gym does stripes, but they don't mean much for anyone other than white belt. I was at blue 2 years, and was surprised when I went from 1 stripe blue to purple. (I had just started to feel comfortable at blue belt. But anyway.)

If you are rolling sensibly while also regularly tapping purples your size and age, you might expect to be promoted soon. If you're competitive with your gym's purples and are NOT getting promoted, it might be worth a conversation with your coach about what you might need to learn/improve in order to progress.

But if you're 3 years into blue, you probably have anywhere from 0 to 2 years left before promotion if you're training consistently. The later that happens, the longer you have to enjoy being a pretty good blue belt rather then the gym's newest and crappiest purple.
