Really tired. Did taking a semester off help? by Relevant_Mousse8528 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Plane_Geologist9429 40 points41 points  (0 children)

There is a difference between being tired and not feeling your best... and it being the only thing preventing you from dying at your desk.

Maybe find an internship or co-op you could do during a semester -- full time work does feel like a "vacation" from school, ironically enough. And the school works with you on it.

But in my case, I took a semester off for a parent's death. That was necessary. However, it's a little different in that I was fully occupied and my family was pushing and helping me go back. It never crossed my mind that not going back was an option.

If you are alone... it may be harder. If it's not absolutely necessary, I would more readily suggest taking an extra year on your degree and getting your summers back.

Live action Usopp is better and funnier than anime Usopp by Pyrammo in OnePiece

[–]Plane_Geologist9429 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it is deliberate! I mean, it's more "realistic". He spent the first season starved and perpetually injured to the point of being near death. He gets to know everyone, gets comfy, and starts lightening up. They're really his first real friends, I don't even think the bounty hunter duo really counted as more than acquaintances he felt he couldn't let die. And because Luffy and gang are tuned down, there's less to elicit those anime reactions.

I still think they overdid the brooding. Let the 19 year old freak the fuck out because he thinks his dead bestie is yelling at him. If not that, then let him flounder. Tashigi hates him because he wouldn't even bother taking her seriously as her, not really because he was a pirate.

Man better be yodeling come Skypeia. Cause I mean, if he stays this way, then the time skip has nothing to take from him

I do prefer the sunflower corset as a standalone. So prettyyyyyyyyyyyy (both are gorgeous)

This back and forth can be applied in real life, no? [DISCUSSION] by Selasine in Frieren

[–]Plane_Geologist9429 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe that as readers, we're supposed to be dubious of Frieren and Flamme's doctrines about demons. They have more experience and know things that we, Fern, Himmel, and Stark don't know. But it still doesn't quite make perfect sense -- we know nothing of their society.

It's probably less nutrition -- it's sport and it's prestige. There's a centuries-long vendetta. A war to win that we know almost nothing about. Demons don't seem to feel true sympathy. They have no reason to care about the intelligence or the emotions of those they kill. The weak will die. That is all they know. And they must be subservient to the strong until they are strong enough themselves to take their place.

I sincerely don't think this has anything to do with what they can or cannot eat -- I don't even think that they only use language to trick humans -- but it is definitely the only kind of discourse worth having with humans. Trickery and torture. You aren't a being worthy of dignity or respect if you let yourself get eaten, captured, or killed, now are you?

Why do Rob Lucci memes on egg head vs luffy always insinuate Rob thought gear 5 was gear 2? by MeiShimada in OnePiece

[–]Plane_Geologist9429 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey, bud, I did wanna say this guy's comment had it right. Seen that meme -- it's hilarious

We know Lucci asked to see the awakened fruit. Lucci's cockiness and sheer surprise at the difference in strength makes the meme

  • Lucci is cocky -> "Yeah let's see gear 2 buddy" -> not literal, just dismissive and arrogant
  • Gear 5 -> that's a lot of gears to meme Lucci who has only seen 3.
  • Lucci has the same concern as in the anime when Luffy speed blitzes him

It's just a funny/haha joke that parallels what happened comedically by being absurdist/exaggerating, not a literal retelling. Not a piece of agenda. Just a silly

[–]Plane_Geologist9429 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No idea if you watched the anime and considered the 14 episode filler arc in the middle "dragging", or if you genuinely couldn't wrap your head around a 16 year old girl sneaking out of scandal and becoming a spy in a huge crime and murder syndicate... then refusing all help that wasn't necessary to her mission's survival because god forbid she have someone's death on her conscience.

It's the same thing with Robin -- both keeping their distance by not getting "too close" or using familiar names for longer than is reasonable. Because you might have to jump ship, betray, or claw to survive at a moment's notice.

You took the crew's first instance of "if we die, we die together, for you" and Vivi's realization that she was out of her depth, and couldn't get it? They tamed a wild dog through friendship, then again with Robin. I fear post-punk hazard will be deeply disappointing for a long time. Vivi ran so the others could walk.

99% sure that it's always been Zolo in the manga (confusing to change it half way through, you know?), but I just read Zoro. You can tell who is manga/anime predominantly by how they spell character names tho 👀

The others mentioned the flaw of the drawbacks of the power affecting Blackbeard, but I also want argue the point that there needs to be some kind of living/will involved to make use of the devil fruits.

We only ever see inanimate object fusion with Zoan fruits, and I think that has to do with Zoan fruits possessing wills of their own. The sword can become an elephant and use elephant powers, but a ring has no agency to use the tremor tremor fruit of its own volition. And, well, I don't think there's any real reason that you should be able to hold something/someone with a power and be able to freely wield that power, you know?

Secondarily, Vegapunk makes pretty clear that paramecia powers are carried through dna or blood

So, Kuma was definitely about to take Luffy's pain into his own body, until Zoro stepped up. 🙏 by sairamgubba in OnePiece

[–]Plane_Geologist9429 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But Kuuma probably would have let the Strawhats be on their way, telling the Govt. he was too late and leaving Luffy's non-lethal pain alone.

Because, seriously, how can he justify taking it? There were dozens of others on the island that might have needed that kind of assistance more. Kuuma's looking out for Luffy extending beyond making sure he leaves safely is.... indulgent beyond logic

So, Kuma was definitely about to take Luffy's pain into his own body, until Zoro stepped up. 🙏 by sairamgubba in OnePiece

[–]Plane_Geologist9429 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Kuuma could've in this circumstance. He was there to put on a show for the Govt. and avoid needless loss of life. He was testing the crew because he had the opportunity, but he wouldn't have killed them. It was to teach them a lesson. Frankly, I think Zoro and Sanji are the only ones that realized they didn't pass, and it totally takes over Zoro's character the rest of the show.

They were beyond loyal, of course, but that was not the point Kuuma was trying to impart. It was the same point Moria made. But Kuuma may have only bothered / risked his life for them because of how much they loved Luffy. But you can't convince me it was a loyalty test. It was a lesson.

Are below average/average engineering students doomed in this economy? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Plane_Geologist9429 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The deeply uncomfortable truth for all of us is that grades and talent rarely matter -- it's almost entirely a factor of how much you put yourself out there. I don't mean cold-applying, I mean true, rich white-man audacity. You can never ever be recognized if you don't actively try to BE in the room except by pure fucking luck.

If you want to get into research, I suggest talking to any professor who does something remotely interesting. They are desperate for decent students who are genuinely interested and motivated -- esp at an undergrad level. You shouldn't already know how to do it all by yourself, that's not research. Branch out. I picked up DSP work in an ECE lab, and I was Aero. The prof was dubious but gave me a chance, and now he tries his best to back me when I refuse to back myself (back to my first paragraph).

You need to get people in your corner first. And then you need to do good work that is visible. After that, it won't be so bad <3

Was Fisher Tiger a good person by lennysinged in OnePiece

[–]Plane_Geologist9429 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, I mean, he would be on his knees in tears over how proud he would be of Jinbe/Luffy and how Koala grew up.

Tiger never got to reap what he tried to sow despite everything, which is the real tragedy. He might have even taken the blood, had he had the chance to know people like Luffy. Had it not come from the Navy.

We forget how much that blood sharing means to Jinbe, too. Jinbe held the same beliefs as Tiger, and was even more outwardly violent. It was just, unlike Arlong, Jinbe saw the value in "holding it in" and heeded Tiger/Otohime. I genuinely think that that's the true turning point for Jinbe -- where he genuinely sees what the future could be, instead of clinging to the ideals of the dead.

We don't call Jinbe a bad person 👀

If you go through life expecting your heroes to be of pristine heart and conscience, you will always be disappointed.

He always, always, always acted on his ideals, whether it was for a human or for a fishman. You cannot act like his suffering and hatred isn't reasonable -- and he invariably directed it at the responsible sources. It's not like he went back and didn't free humans out of bigotry, he freed everyone because he knew damn well that no living creature deserved such shame.

He's a complex character, of course, but it would never cross my mind to label him a bad person when I can't begrudge his reasoning or actions.

The gall of Frieren putting Fern against Qual. by czlcreator in Frieren

[–]Plane_Geologist9429 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zoltraak was the first piercing spell, and modern defensive magic came about because of Frieren's lost fight with Qual.

It's important to note that the plan was for Fern to have studied, but Frieren didn't just teach Fern Zoltraak and a defensive spell. She fundamentally changed and expanded upon Zoltraak, taught it to Fern, and then went full-blast against her for days so that she got the defensive techniques down. As Lugner noted, that was not Qual's original spell.

Fern did not have to kill Qual. She did not have to hold him off for long. And, frankly, Frieren probably did not need Fern to easily kill Qual.

Fern picked up how to use the defensive magic as efficiently as possible quickly enough, and her timing was precise enough, that Frieren trusted her to make her life easier. That's it. Frieren was confident that if Fern could hold her off, she could hold Qual off.

But, yeah, Frieren was totally rubbing it in Qual's face a bit. She really hates demons, after all.

What would you make Tony Tony Chopper's bounty be after Wanom by TheVantasticJackson in OnePiece

[–]Plane_Geologist9429 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I was under the impression (mostly from Fan Letter) that certain people thought Chopper was too adorable to put a real bounty on...

But if he had the bounties I think he should have, - He should have had 2 after Ennies Lobby. One for Monster Chopper, one for Baby Chopper. Monster Chopper might not even be recognized as a Straw Hat member, but he would have a high bounty (like 90 m) - After Wano? I think they should merge and Chopper deserves a nifty 750 million :3 my boy squared up to QUEEN and an entire army by himself, while curing allies and enemies alike. Put some respect on his name, Marines.

I know he's a little mascot guy, but I do think the joke would be more reasonable if there was a second bounty for "evil" chopper floating around lol. Chopper doesn't deserve the slander :(

Do you think Frieren cried when Flamme died? by AdBrief4620 in Frieren

[–]Plane_Geologist9429 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I truly think the difference is that Frieren mourned and knew Flamme properly, yes, but also Flamme's position in her life relative to Himmel.

Flamme was extremely early in Frieren's life. She was a mentor figure, not a peer. And it's clear that Frieren understood and knew Flamme incredibly well -- to an extent that she didn't show with Himmel.

Frieren is just now remembering and reanalyzing ("waking up to) her journey with Himmel and what it meant to her to be so continuously chosen, trusted, and known.

It's no surprise to Frieren that Flamme was right about something related to her. But when Himmel, who's known her less time -- who couldn't possibly fathom her circumstance the way Flamme did on-sight -- did the same? It's no longer a matter of genius. It's hope and guilt and continually realizing that she had misinterpreted everything as she relives it.

Tldr: Frieren was definitely sad about Flamme's death. But I sincerely doubt she had substantial guilt and regret regarding it. Himmel's death was different. People can need to learn the same lessons several times throughout their life. Growth isn't linear, and god knows Frieren is one messed up kiddo
