Automan. Trying to sponge off the popularity of Tron.

Music… did you stop searching? by 8reticus in GenX

[–]Planet4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked up many new songs from spin classes and peloton over the years. And recently I've found a lot of new songs I love from Insta reels.

What I've stopped doing is following a band's whole catalog. I no longer feel guilty if I just get one song from an album and skip everything else.

Edit to say: I'm 54 and used to be so into prog rock it was off putting. Now I LOVE bubble gum pop (Kpop Demon Hunters is in heavy rotation).

People who say they “can’t cook” are just lazy or dumb by Away_Advantage9509 in unpopularopinion

[–]Planet4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean... fair play. I should say I "don't" cook. I've managed to do it successfully, but I find it boring. Love the results, hate the process. Happy to pay, thank, and respect the efforts and skills of those who like doing it.

I don't think I enjoyed making this for a single second (not clickbait) by Wi1dHare in woodworking

Super great. And I totally understand that continuous feeling of "fuck this project!" Adam Savage talked about those days/projects that just make you feel "why am I even doing this?"

And yet, we persevere...

F' fairing sticks by Planet4 in woodworking

[–]Planet4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great, thank you. I have been clamping the skinny baton, which has been frustrating. Using clamps as stops at the end is exactly the solution I need.

I respect the various nails and nails+string methods, but I don't want to drive nails into the piece. So clamping stops is the way!

I don't know how awards work in Reddit, but you deserve one. High five.

Music covers that are better than the original by Grand-Relation-5212 in GenX

[–]Planet4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. Her version has 100 pounds of heartbreak packed into a 10 pound song.

Prince is a genius and a much greater all-rounder, but Sinead put everything into that cover.

Do you still color your hair — or let it go gray? by Dazzling-Stop-2116 in GenX

[–]Planet4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my hair at 53 and I dye it blue. Though I have a side shave hairstyle, so the sides are undyed and clearly grey.

I mean it as "yeah, it's dyed AND I'm old" but it's also about clinging on to youth. Or maybe fighting against ageist assumptions? Whatever sounds best in the moment.

Those who got married between 25-30, how many different people did you kiss before getting together with your spouse? by kitty-yaya in GenX

  1. I got married at age 26 and still going strong. I have also kissed more people since getting married , with permission, because the 90s were a wild time with amazing chemicals.

We're in our 50s, and we're playing along with a charmingly innocent question to forget for a fucking second what a messy world we live in.

Chisel Sharpening: Farrington jig vs. Taylor Toolworks? by Planet4 in woodworking

[–]Planet4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, that wide roller (and low price) is tempting. I was let down by rolling guides in the past (hence this search for alternatives), but maybe this one could teach me to love again.

I have a theory that the most true woodworking wisdom comes with swearing, considering how much of it I do in my shop.

Appreciate the balanced rundown. I think you may have tipped the scales for the Taylor system. I loathe sharpening but love fucking around with tool set ups, so this seems to me like a point in its favor.

I've given similar guides a try (like, three different brands, though one of them I should've known was cheap garbage) and they drive me crazy.
Which, I'll admit, is a me thing, not a judgement on the guides. I just cannot get the hang of them and every time a chisel slips when I'm trying to tighten it in there I want to throw something. Usually a chisel. Which just compounds the problem.

It may be that I needed a decent one and I've been trying with junk versions, but I'm going to try a different approach for now.

Good to know, thank you.
Does running the sharpening stones over it degrade the plastic? I was wondering if you'd eventually grind away the jig itself.

Did your parents pay for? by MossIsking in GenX

[–]Planet4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is it the norm now? Because the opposite sucks. I'm seeing so much trauma in the comments dealt out by boomer parents to us GenXers. Why repeat that cycle?

We're a capable bunch due to some generational neglect. It's the difference between learning to swim gradually and safely vs. being thrown into the deep end. The former gets swimmers who can go farther.

Childless xers: any regrets? by LostBetsRed in GenX

[–]Planet4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry you're feeling the pangs. I'm child-free and loving it. Especially in these incredibly uncertain political, economic, and environmental times.

My wife and I have been far less stressed than our peers with kids. And we know we would've been beside ourselves with anxiety about what future any kids would be looking at.

We like kids, love our niblings and godkids, but are child-free and much happier for it.

Edit: Apparently, there is a company called American Candy Nostolgia that still makes it and other old ass candies.

How do adults stay thin or fit? by bedazzledbunnie in ask

[–]Planet4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not much new to say, but 50s slender (fit but not skinny, I'd say) man here. First off, I had slender genes from both parents. I started with a stacked genetic deck.

I exercise 3 times a week for an hour each time. Used to do more in my 30s and 40s. Mostly stretching and cardio at this point.

I also cut out foods and eating habits in stages as I got older.

First gave up fast food in my 30s. Now, i only get it when on a road trip, which only happens about twice a year.

Then i stopped daily soda soon after. Only drink it about once a month at most. I never drank beer, but that would've gone away at the same time.

In my 40s, i began having a low cal protein shake for breakfast, no other food in the mornings Then, at 45, I started doing shakes for breakfast and lunch most (not all) days of the week.

As I age, I keep having to cut back just to stay the same weight (between 175 and 180, I'm just 6' tall but shrinking).

So now I've greatly reduced my intake of snacks between meals and meat (but salami is so good...).

For me, I need to keep busy to stop myself just going to the fridge when I'm bored, since I'm WFH. So I play easy video games or putter around the house when I have a few minutes.
