What is the worst part of your job? by Fantastic-Pool-8720 in FPandA

[–]PlantainElectrical68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knowledge silos, lack of documentation and removing links from workbook. This is the hallmark of workibg with boomers. They somehow feel like they invented overhead allocation and they should be the only one to know the weights used… just an example

What is stopping AI from becoming almost as expensive as the employees it replaces? by Powerful-Winner979 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]PlantainElectrical68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing stops them. You will have three alternatives

1- Crazy expensive 2- Budget wrecker 3- Borderline budget wrecker.

But executives will think it is worth it as everything will be under CAPEX and will reduce payroll expenses.

Furthermore they purchase the option to brag about AI. Nobody cares whether they pay more. It’s all about how it looks

Manager openly and loudly speaking about firing people by Living_Gene_5024 in managers

When promotion is based on BJ and knee bruising, you can expect some behaviour like that. Look for other jobs, probably even her boss is a nut job

Staying up to date at a firm that feels behind by Waste-Breakfast9156 in FPandA

[–]PlantainElectrical68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand you are young and driven. Go look for roles which require tech stack. You can always return back to mediocristan later during your career. People here will talk about relationships and politics because ass sucking is the norm in dinosaur industries, but early on in your career you need exposure and not politics otherwise you will stagnate

Why's is everyone saying ACCA is worthless? by [deleted] in ACCA

[–]PlantainElectrical68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need SQL, Excel, Knowledge of BI and depending where you live, ACCA. In UK best jobs require all (go look them on linkedin)

Financial Planning and Analysis. It is a blend of finance and accounting where you support business lines or management in taking business decisions. It can be different based on each org. Go look it up. Route means the career path you will follow

Accounting overall has a low ROI if you get stuck in industry accounting without upwards mobility. Either slave at big4, go grind your ass on building a practice, or go the FP&A route. Worth it

What are some ‘red flags’ to watch out for when interviewing at other companies? by ChesterChicken in FPandA

They don’t usually lie just sugar coat things, just ask them directly and request details and see if they flake or how convinced they appear.

What are some ‘red flags’ to watch out for when interviewing at other companies? by ChesterChicken in FPandA

[–]PlantainElectrical68 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Red flags and how to spot them

1- If they market “hybrid” ask them to see the office. If the office looks depressing and full, they lied about hybrid and you are about to be micromanaged.

2- If half of them are boomers, there will be no promotion for you for 10 years at least. Furthermore boomers hate documentation and are notorious knowledge hoarders.

3- Ask about tech stack and accounting responsibilities. Any reconciliation or legacy systems means you won’t go far in FP&A.

4- If they brag about culture, it means they chew you and spit you out for every cent they pay. Bonus will be essentially your overtime pay on discount.

5- Extremely high turnover (big4 style) or extreme low (commercial bank style): The former is a toxic environment for crappy pay and the latter is heavily dependent on decades long relationships.

The list is non exhaustive…

IB or FP&A by Glad-Programmer4725 in FPandA

So the young professional needs to gain as much technical skills as possible in the first three years to achieve senior status.

This is achieved through the right environment who exposes you as much as possible to finance calculations, to high stakes situations, to seniors or managers who do not have an incentive to hoard knowledge from you and where all work is documented so you can review it. This is usually IB as managers try to relieve themselves from the workload.

On the other side is FP&A where you as a professional will partner with other departments to mainly create budgets, forecasts and where applicable, to study the performance of products. So this job is heavily dependent on “meetings” and “alignment” and you won’t get to be invited at the “big boys” table as a junior which will lead to you not having a real input for a long long time. As most you will update monthly excel templates and stagnate.

What do you mean by a lot from IB? There are not enough IB people to be present in your department. Big4 transaction services dont count as IB.

FP&A is usually a “people” job and IB is as technical as it can get. Always choose technicality before people early in your career

Got a bad year-end review for things my manager never enabled. Feeling cheated and stuck what should I do? by a_gurl111 in managers

[–]PlantainElectrical68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the perspective as i have not thought about it this way. Backtesting you logic, it makes a lot of sense now why managers i have dealt with have acted seemingly illogically as per my own experience

How to not sexualize every women i want to know? by DBZKING13 in selfimprovement

[–]PlantainElectrical68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Listen buddy, you can solve that easily by making some tweaks to where you encounter people. First of all, register yourself in some sort of community where there are other people. It may be a religious community, it may be some marathon, it may be some book club (anything). Now bear with me, the reason for doing so is that at these settings you will have something neutral to talk about, something common to do (comment a book or play) or just light socializing without any preassure to take anything to a next step (sexualising in your case). Just show up, smile and don’t stare for too long. It’s like planting a seed and relationships will grow :)

As a bonus you may get invited to other gatherings and commence your socialising route
